The Daily F Bomb, Monday 1/21 Inauguration Day

Happy Inauguration Day!  I remember being in those crowds four years ago. Never before had I seen so many people crowded together and moving so slowly and STILL all in a fabulous mood. Every time the crowd had to stop moving for a moment, people would turn to whoever they were next to and ask, “So where are you from?” It was really fun, really amazing.

This year I get to watch from the comfort of my couch. Crowded with cats, clutching a cup of coffee. Hopefully not coughing. 😉

I will not let you off the hook on my nosy questions, however. Why would I do that?

For starters, what was your first car? Should there be nuts in brownies? What about frosting? If you were being inaugurated, whose bible (or what other book) would you want to be sworn in on? Do you like Michelle’s bangs? What did you keep in  your high school locker? When you travel, do you travel light or heavy? What scene that you witnessed in your pre-every phone having a camera life do you wish you had been able to capture in a photo?

Last nights Twitter offerings are:

Now, it’s time for your history lesson. Pay attention, and don’t forget to read the hovers.

On This Day

In 1861, Jefferson Davis and five other Southerners resigned from the U.S. Senate.

In 1908, New York City passed the Sullivan Ordinance, making it illegal for women to smoke in public, but it was vetoed by the mayor (whose wife probably threatened to put her cigarette out in his face).

In 1950, a federal jury in New York City found former State Department official Alger Hiss guilty of perjury.

In 1977, President Carter pardoned most of the Americans who had evaded the draft for the Vietnam war.

In 1994, a jury in Manassas, Va., acquitted Lorena Bobbitt by reason of temporary insanity of maliciously wounding her husband, John, whom she’d accused of sexually assaulting her.

In 1997, Speaker Newt Gingrich was reprimanded and fined as the House voted for first time in history to discipline its leader for ethical misconduct.

In 2010, a bitterly divided Supreme Court, in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, vastly increased the power of big business to influence government decisions by freeing them to spend their millions directly to sway elections for president and Congress.

Am I too early to suggest Biden in 2016?

My hat is off to MLK. He and then RFK were lost to us at the end of my senior year in high school.

    Here are a few answers:

what was your first car? A 1944 Mini squareback that I bought when I was a grad student in the UK at the U. of Southampton. As a member of the student union, I was able to insure it for about 60 pounds (ca. $100) a year.

Should there be nuts in brownies? yes

    What about frosting? yes

If you were being inaugurated, whose bible (or what other book) would you want to be sworn in on? I agree with President Obama’s choice on this one.

Do you like Michelle’s bangs? yes. She looks absolutely beautiful with any hairstyle.

What did you keep in  your high school locker? Almost nothing. I took a very heavy course load so that I could graduate in 3 years. I carried all my books with me.

When you travel, do you travel light or heavy? I am a light traveler (carry-on only), with one exception. When I go abroad to work on animal bones (my archaeological specialty), I have to carry a lot of stuff. In addition to my books and guides, I carry three pairs of calipers (measuring instruments). The largest is a foot (300 mm) long and made of metal. It can’t go in my carry on since I might take over the airline with it. I also carry a large laptop, so that I can record data. It has my database and a lot of spatial analysis programs on it.

What scene that you witnessed in your pre-every phone having a camera life do you wish you had been able to capture in a photo? Good question, and I don’t have a good answer. Maybe when I went to the Vatican for Xmas-eve mass.

For starters, what was your first car? I’ve still never owned one. I know, I’m a freak.

Should there be nuts in brownies?  Absolutely not! No barriers should be added to the sweet melty chewy goodness.

What about frosting? No, why do people need to make everything too sweet these days?

If you were being inaugurated, whose bible (or what other book) would you want to be sworn in on? Hmmmm. Julia Child’s copy of Le Guide Culinaire?

Do you like Michelle’s bangs? Yes, as an inveterate bang-wearer myself (they hide a multitude of sins) I love them.

What did you keep in  your high school locker?  Just books, I didn’t do boy-band shrines or anything like that. Contraband was kept in my pockets.

When you travel, do you travel light or heavy? I aim for the former, but end up too much on the side of the latter. But compared to some women I’ve seen at airports, I do travel pretty lightly.

What scene that you witnessed in your pre-every phone having a camera life do you wish you had been able to capture in a photo?  I once rode past Dan Hicks’ house on East Blithedale in Mill Valley at night, he was passed out in his doorway, beautifully illuminated by his porch light, with his old dog barking at him, trying to wake him up.

I never heard of anyone literally, as Biden might say, swearing on a stack of bibles until now. (Word on the street is that MLK’s will be on top of Lincoln’s.)

I am an utter minimalist. I have never flown into Easter Island or Tristan da Cunha, but landing in say, London or Denver, my theory is that I can buy soap, underwear, pretty much anything I might need once I get there.

Do not take it too far however. I have tried traveling with nothing except what is in my coat pockets; it amounts to asking to be detained.

…and happy Inauguration/MLK Day. Turned on the TV this morning and was greeted with some lovely choir of young’uns performing in front of the Capitol.

My first car was a 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster sedan almost exactly like this one (same color even):

It wasn’t the first car I ever drove, but it was the first one I bought with my own money. 🙂

  6. princesspat

The grand girls slept over last night and are watching the inaugural with me now…..a squirmy bed full!

They are ready for breakfast and I need my coffee…..history lesson moves to the kitchen.

Nancy Pelosi looks very chic and soignee in her stylish coat. And I love the First Lady’s new look. The bangs suit her well. 🙂

  8. 1864 House

-2 on the drive to work this morning. Brrrrr.

First car? A white 1963 Ford Galaxy 500 I inherited from my grandpa in 1973. It had shiny metal Ford logo-shaped inserts in the seat upholstery and they are permanently branded into the back of my thighs. Shorts in summer and metal on the seats… not a good combination.

Nuts in brownies? Not in. On top of. I make turtle brownies that have pecans, chocolate chips and caramel drizzle on top.

What about frosting? What about it? I hate it. I scrape it off to get to the cakey goodness.

Book to be sworn in on? The Constitution

Do you like Michelle’s bangs? Not really.

What was in my high school locker? Books. Jeans to wear to and from school instead of my Catholic girl school uniform skirt.

Travel light or heavy? Two weeks in Japan with just a backpack this past summer. I think that qualifies as light.

Photo wish? Every day of one year of my life. Just not going to say which year and why.

  9. Floja Roja

I wanna be on one of those! But if I had been, I’d say ix-nay on the ab-cray. No hives for me!

Now pass that NY Riesling, I wanna try it.

  10. For starters, what was your first car? 1976 Chevelle Malibu

Should there be nuts in brownies?  back slowly away from the brownies, and keep the nuts where we can see them.

What about frosting? yes. Better yet, the brownies should be lemon bars. And then frosted.

If you were being inaugurated, whose bible (or what other book) would you want to be sworn in on? Darwin’s On the Origin of Species

Do you like Michelle’s bangs? Yes. She be hot.

What did you keep in  your high school locker?  Books #geek

When you travel, do you travel light or heavy? I never check baggage unless traveling with family. Have a Victorinox backpack and three-fold suitbag (that Donna keeps telling me to replace, but I loves it). Once circled the globe (going west – does that make me older or younger?) without checking anything.

What scene that you witnessed in your pre-every phone having a camera life do you wish you had been able to capture in a photo? Smile on my 10-month-old son’s face after not seeing him for three weeks.

…is gilding the lily. No self-respecting brownie wants to see its pristine glossy surface defiled by gooey frosting. And I say that as a frosting lover from way back. 😉
