A Few of My Recent Favorites…

I am a man of few words and they say a picture is worth of thousand of them.

When my daughter was younger, I’d sometimes tell her to use her ‘words’…and occasionally she’d draw me a picture instead.

I like pictures.

Here’s a random sample of some of my favorites from the last 18 months.  Please feel free to add your own.

that’s the ‘Morning Glory Spillway’, aka ‘The Gloryhole’ (lol), at lake berryessa.  at monticello dam, it’s a funnel-shaped outlet that allows water to bypass the dam when it reaches capacity.

monticello is one of ‘my dams, that is, under the jurisdiction of my agency/region.  i was doing some fieldwork near there not so long ago.

  2. and got sidetracked by this Best Pictures of 2010 site – http://totallycoolpix.com/2010

You better have broadband if you want to load the page. There are a lot of large photos on one page. My two favorites were about a dozen photos from the bottom. One is of a boy dancing in the rain in Havana. The one right below it is a photo of policemen in ceremonial garb, including spiked helmets, line up in front of porta-potties. Lot of great photos there.

  3. Here are the Nat’l Geographic best of 2010. It’s tough to pick a favorite, because there are so many awesome photos on that page. Here’s one I really love.

I think we may have already linked to these photos. It’s a piece on Boston.com about the NG’s annual photo contest. I’ve seen all of these photos before and I think it was in this format. Now I’ve got a link to the winning photos on the NG site – http://ngm.nationalgeographic….

A portrait of 18-year-old Afghan Bibi Aisha, whose nose and ears were cut off by the Taliban husband she’d fled, is the subject of the World Press Photo organization’s 2010 Photo of the Year. South African photographer Jodi Bieber’s picture, made for Time magazine, became controversial when it appeared on that publication’s cover in July 2010.
