Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Archive for December 2009

An open letter to a number of politicians, including the President:

To the Majority leaders of the Senate, the House of Representatives, their Minority counterparts, the President of the United States, and various others (such as Senators McCain, Lieberman, and all the others who are making a mess out of our legislative system and the future of our economy and our government):

What the hell is wrong with you guys? Don’t you know we are watching all of you as you behave like High School adolescents and make our lawmaking processes a joke? Don’t you know you were elected by ordinary people like me and, while we don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to make sure your campaign hotel accommodations are first rate, we believed that in voting for you… all of you…that you would not only represent us, but LISTEN to our concerns and work together to solve our collective problems?

The Big Dog Weighs In On HCR

IN a statement released today, Bubba sez:

America stands at a historic crossroads. At last, we are close to making real health insurance reform a reality. We face one critical, final choice, between action and inaction. We know where the path of inaction leads to: more uninsured Americans, more families struggling to keep up with skyrocketing premiums, higher federal budget deficits, and health costs so much higher than any other country’s they will cripple us economically.

Our only responsible choice is the path of action. Does this bill read exactly how I would write it? No. Does it contain everything everyone wants? Of course not. But America can’t afford to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Armageddon – Democratic Style

Disclaimer: When I wrote this I was envisioning it as a Saturday Night Live skit.

[Flashback to three weeks ago]

The President is seated at his desk in the Oval Office. He shuffles through some papers. A hard knock on the private door used by the Chief of Staff causes the President to lift his eyes and call out, “Enter.”

The door opens and the Chief of Staff hurries in with the President’s science adviser in tow.

“I’m sorry to interrupt you, Mr. President, but this couldn’t wait.”

“What is it, Bob?”

“Dr. Singh has brought urgent news. A large asteroid is headed for Earth. We have three weeks before it strikes.”

“Good God,”

The harried looking physicist who had entered with the Chief of Staff glances at his watch and says, “22 days, 2 hours, and 14 minutes, Mr. President.”

Was Harriet Tubman a CISSP?

This is my way to celebrate and honor the woman Harriet Tubman was. She is the African American woman I most admire for her courage and dedication to secure freedom for her people, despite the high risk of losing her life. The following Chart maps each Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) security domain with Harriet Tubman’s life work of ensuring freedom for runaway slaves.

The Nature of Belief

The last few days I’ve been engaged in more than a couple of conversations about the nature of belief and the relative worth of belief, lack thereof, or simple agnosticism.

Hello from January 1, 2011

What a year it has been. The end of 2009 was just the beginning of an astonishing year. The absolute surprise switch of three Republican Senators who voted with Democrat on HRC just before Christmas was perhaps the pivotal moment that saved our economy and country. The two former Republicans from Maine, Olympia_Snowe and Susan_Collins subsequently switched party’s. Resigning Republican Mel_Martinez’s seat was won by Democratic candidate Betty Castor.

The biggest political losers of the 2010 election cycle were John McCain, whose humiliating primary defeat to J.D. Hayworth led to the astonishing victory of Democrat INSERT DEMOCRAT and Sarah Palin who effectively split the Republican Party in two. While former Governor Palin had minor successes in deep red states defeating longtime Republican candidates with her new party The Dead Caribous helped castrate the Republican Party and led to the largest majority seen by any party in the history of the United States.

The biggest winners of 2010 were the Democratic Party and President Obama. After winning the HCR debate and passage of the bill, the President was able to pass further stimulus for small business and much needed financial support for average Americans with the historic six month payrolls holiday for the first half of 2010. Jobs creation started picking up in the spring as more emphasis on green jobs and basic infrastructure picked up in high gear.

Daily Tubes for December 15 & 16, 2009

My girl Michele was out and about yesterday. I do love her so.

Heh.

It is even more fun when juxtaposed against something smart.

Heh. It does help when one is able to string together more than two or three sentences.

The Onion is just in with interesting archeological news.

How many other on-line societies have mysteriously disappeared over the years? And what will they reveal if found?

Gitmo Detainees Coming to Illinois, GOP Suggests We All Cower In Fear

The administration announced today that some of the detainees from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba will be moving to the Thomson Correction Center in Illinois.  The Republican Leadership is going all out to convince the American public that:

o  a US Supermax prison is not up to the task of holding terrorism suspects;

o  the US system of justice is not up to the task of dealing with enemy combatants, and;

o  the US cannot be made safe from Al Qaeda under any circumstances.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., the No. 3 House GOP leader, said moving terrorist suspects to the United States would put the public at risk.

“The Obama administration is putting international public relations ahead of public safety,” Pence said.

Not exactly the rousing speech President Bush gave from the smoking rubble at Ground Zero, but this is the new, improved and more timid, GOP.

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.
