ACORN pushback

NYT reports Bob Bauer, general counsel for the Obama campaign, is calling for the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to look into political motives for law enforcement (FBI) targeting of ACORN, as an extension of the abuse of power resulting in the United States attorney firings.

I request that Special Prosecutor Dannehy’s inquiry include a review of any involvement by Justice Department and White House officials in supporting the McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican National Committee (“RNC”)’s systematic development and dissemination of unsupported, spurious allegations of vote fraud. It is highly likely that the very sort of politically motivated conduct identified in the Department’s investigation to date, necessitating the appointment of a Special Prosecutor, is repeating itself, and for the same reason: unwarranted and politically motivated intervention in the upcoming election. An investigation must be entrusted to government officials who do not have an improper political motivation or a conflict of interest, either in fact or appearance.

  1. One of the great things about democracy is that political machinators on one side have to worry – what happens when the other side gain power?

I’m glad the Obama campaign is playing hardball here. Maybe Obama’s strong legal background helps.

with the treatment of ACORN.  McCain was there supporting them in 2006, saying what a great job they are doing.  Look at the demographic that ACORN reaches out to help.

This crap being tossed at ACORN seems like the McCain/Palin racist incitements/rhetoric at rallies–that is a public fear campaign to turn minorities and the poor away from voting, a national stage voter disenfranchisement scare tactic…but maybe I am just grasping at straws?

because of their bullshit treatment of staff and the mess with Ratke’s brother stealing money.  ACORN does much good, but it’s also an embarassing mess.

That said, anyone who’s ever been in an ACORN field “office” would laugh outloud at the notion of them “tearing apart the fabric of democracy.”  Wow. Really?  I’m not sure they have the budget for enough Sharpies and folding chairs to tear apart the fabric of democracy.

What no doubt happened is butt simple — they over-zealously hired more canvassers than they needed and with everyone and their uncle out there registering voters it didn’t take too long before there were more ACORN peeps out there than there were unregistered voters to be easily found.  My guess is many of them simply couldn’t find the unregistered folks they needed to meet their quotas everyday but the field managers in their zeal, refused to believe this.  Desperate to keep getting paid, the canvassers started doing the only thing they could do — make shit up.

Of course, the media and the red meat Republicans aren’t going to accept the simple obvious explanation — lots of people fucked up and many more desperate people did what they had to do to make a meager buck.  Oh hell no, they are going to make some vast left wing conspiracy out of a bunch of minimum wage poor folks with clipboards.

If I found a genie in a bottle, I’d blow one of my three wishes on the opportunity to give Sarah Palin a swirlie … in an ACORN bathroom.
