Rape victims are a taxpayer burden

FOB92 just asked me to cross-post this :

8 years ago, complaints about charging rape victims for medical exams in Wasilla prompted the Alaska Legislature to pass a bill — signed into law by (former Gov.)Knowles — that banned the practice statewide.

“There was one town in Alaska that was charging victims for this, and that was Wasilla,” Knowles said

A May 23, 2000, article in Wasilla’s newspaper, The Frontiersman, noted that Alaska State Troopers and most municipal police agencies regularly pay for such exams, which cost between $300 and $1,200 apiece.

“(But) the Wasilla police department does charge the victims of sexual assault for the tests,” the newspaper reported.

It also quoted Wasilla Police Chief Charlie Fannon objecting to the law. Fannon was appointed to his position by Palin after her dismissal of the previous police chief. He said it would cost Wasilla $5,000 to $14,000 a year if the city had to foot the bill for rape exams.

“In the past we’ve charged the cost of exams to the victims’ insurance company when possible,” Fannon told the newspaper. “I just don’t want to see any more burden put on the taxpayer.”

– Alaska Daily News

Those poor Alaska tax payers! What ‘concern’ Fannon has for them. He must have forgotten that his state has the smallest tax burden in the Union.

I want to channel a big WTF scream through my keyboard, but what good will it do. What can you say to the (small) community that wants to pile on a victim of one of the most heinous crimes imaginable?

Scarier than four more years?! The impossible is here.

My son, a recent Iraq veteran and once conservative Republican, rearranged my head last night with this stunning observation — McCain/Palin was rapidly becoming a more terrifying proposition than four more years of Bush/Cheney.  It took only a moment of consideration to accept the once unfathomable was now real.

An angry black man.

That’s what the Republicans want, oh so desperately do they crave it.  If the Republicans can label Barack, through implication and “unconnected” surrogates, 527’s and friendly media, if they can label him as an angry black man he will go down into defeat.

Barack’s in a tough spot.  He has to be unflappable, yet he cannot appear conciliatory or weak.  If he goes into some righteous attack, some brash and divine diatribe on the lies and slanders of the Right they WILL win.

Jake and the Fat Man

OK . . . this diary isn’t about that old TV show. It actually should read “Jake and the Old Man” . . . that old TV show just comes to mind any time I visit the blog of ABC’s smart-ass, Jake Tapper.

I don’t really like the guy (especially after he got all nicotine nazi on Obama), but I have to give him credit for throwing some sarcasm into his political blog. Today was classic:

Dear Senator McCain

Here is Gov. Palin’s list of earmark requests from February 2008.

Will you please stop telling the American people that she never asked for or received any pork barrel projects?

Respectfully,

Jake

Ending the Goode Life- An Interview with Tom Periello

Tom Periello, the Democrat running for Congress in VA-05- a district that runs from the North Carolina border almost all the way to the DC exburbs (or, for those of us from Virginia, from UVA to Martinsville Speedway), was gracious enough to take some time out of his busy schedule recently to sit down with the editors of The Motley Moose. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our wonderful district, it’s probably more nationally recognized as the home of this man:

Recognize him? See if this rings a bell:

The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.

How about his desire to repeal the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, or his opposition to supporting mental health billing reform, and his unmitigated support for Big Tobacco? Hey, at least we know he’s got our back taking down online gambling– probably one of the most important issues currently facing this nation, right?

For those of us here in VA-05, Tom Periello is a godsend. Devilstower, over at the Daily Kos, had an excellent diary on this subject. Tom donates ten percent his volunteers’ time right back into the community; he’s a proud progressive and a member of the Red to Blue program. He’s hopefully going to be one of many new Democratic additions to the House of Representatives this election cycle.

We are also the second of only two political websites Tom has agreed to sit down and have a talk with, the other being Richmond-based Raising Kaine. Given the uphill battle Tom’s facing in VA-05, that’s truly an honor.

Tom, in his own words:
