Happy hump day, Herd! That was some SOTU last night, eh? I wish I had my old dual attention span back. I kept missing what the Prez was saying because I was watching Boehner twitching for a drink and grinding his teeth.

I was also afraid they’d break in any minute with Dorner news. Dorner has made me think of a question. Among many.

Have you ever been picked on by police? How good a consumer are you? Do you like or hate shopping? When you watch TV, can you say afterwards what that commercial you just saw was for? (I used to work at a research place and was amazed at how commercial messages just don’t stick with me.) Are you more of a word person or a number person? How do/did you handle telemarketers? Do you prefer things planned in advance or spontaneous?

    I only watch about 20 hours of TV a year. I did watch the Super Bowl with friends. For most of the ads, it was unclear, even while watching them. Is it for a car?

    Both, really. But not pictures (except graphs)

    How do/did you handle telemarketers?

    I just hang up. But one friend used to pass the phone to her very talkative 3 year old.

    Here are a few answers:

    Have you ever been picked on by police? No, I have been lucky.

    How good a consumer are you? I am pretty careful with my money. I was a really poor grad student back in the 70s, and I know how to stretch a dollar. My mom was in high school (1932-36) and college (1936-40) during the Depression. At the time, both her grandmothers lived with their family. [I have the tea set that my great-grandmothers used. One was English and the other was Canadian. They had tea every afternoon.] My mom could stretch a dollar farther than anyone I know.

    Do you like or hate shopping? I don’t mind shopping except for shoes. I can never find shoes that fit my big feet and look decent.

    When you watch TV, can you say afterwards what that commercial you just saw was for? Absolutely not. I tune them out.

    Are you more of a word person or a number person? A bit of both actually. I am mostly a writer, but I did earn a statistics award as an undergrad.

    How do/did you handle telemarketers? I hang up.

    Do you prefer things planned in advance or spontaneous? Spontaneous things.

    I watched the second half of the SOTU and thought ha did well.  I couldn’t watch Rubio but have seen the video of the gulp of water.  That was weird.

    Police harassment:  no

    Good consumer:  nope, I try to buy as little as possible.  I pay attention to packaging and write letters to companies that use too much or non recyclable packaging.  Hell, I still use powder detergent on my clothes because it comes in cardboard ( and is cheaper). I make my own home cleaning products. I drive my cars for 8-10 years before replacing.  Now, I think this is smart consumerism but in America I am definitely the odd man out.  

    Shopping:  only for yarn

    Remember commercials:  only the really annoying ones

    Words or numbers:  both but I am pretty good with numbers and have an uncanny ability to always know what time it is.

    Telemarketers:  I try to be nice but if they won’t get off the phone I just hang up.  We dropped our landline a few months ago so not really a problem anymore.

    Planned or spontaneous:  planned

    Have you ever been picked on by police? Yes. Many times. Hunted by them in fact. Though thanks to a Puerto Rican NYC cop I didn’t get brutalized during one arrest.  

    How good a consumer are you? Do you like or hate shopping? Good consumer – pinch pennies, clip coupons, hunt for best buys and sales – nowadays I do most of my shopping online – love it.

    When you watch TV, can you say afterwards what that commercial you just saw was for? Usually no – unless the music becomes an earworm.

    Are you more of a word person or a number person? Word. I fail at math.

    How do/did you handle telemarketers? I am polite, and let them read their scripts. I had a roommate who worked as a telemarketer, and developed sympathy for them as a result.

    Do you prefer things planned in advance or spontaneous? Planned in advance mostly, since I am locked into a school and writing schedule.

    One time at a tiny demonstration an officer I didn’t know told me, come here, (over by a wall, away from the picket line,) don’t move. I gave my picket sign to somebody. After a minute, another officer I knew came over and said, what are you doing?

    I said, he told me not to move.

    Who?

    Him.

    Yeah? Well, you’re not under arrest. How old are you, 15? Don’t worry. I know him. He’s just a grouch. Go back and picket if you want to, but watch yourself with him when I’m not here. Okay?

    When you watch TV, can you say afterwards what that commercial you just saw was for? I always mute them but the disgusting ones–phlegm, men’s plumbing–seem to get an Eeeww! reaction anyway.

    Are you more of a word person or a number person? Words.

    How do you handle telemarketers? They usually take a bit of time to start talking whether robo or live. If they don’t say something within three seconds I hang up. At my door recently I said to a couple of young men Are you religious people? They nodded and I said, smiling, Then you need to go away. And they did.

    Do you prefer things planned in advance or spontaneous? Spontaneous, I don’t plan well at all. If someone else plans something I’m happy to participate.

    Consumer? So, so. Like or hate? I’m not a fan of shopping. Much to my teen daughter’s dismay.

    I can’t remember any commercial I saw this morning.

    Definitely a word person, says the Speech/Language Pathologist.

    I hang up. Immediately.

    Depends on my mood. Depends on what spontaneously happens!

    Never had any police incidents, though I got stopped for speeding a couple of times.

    Sometimes I’m in the mood for shopping, sometimes it’s a necessary evil. I don’t really like shopping for clothes. Decisions, decisions.

    I hardly ever watch commercials. I switch the channel and watch another program for a bit. Same with my Internet surfing. Adblock.

    Definitely a word person. Funny story- back when I was a junior in HS, in our America vs Communism class, our teacher was going over stuff we learned to prepare us for a test the next day. He wrote down an important date and I complained that I couldn’t remember numbers. I don’t recall what date it was, but instead of, let’s say 1956, he wrote in nineteen fifty six  blah blah. Wiseass.

    Easy, I ignore them. My family and friends know to use text messages when they call me. I’m not gonna answer voice calls. LOL. If I ever get a text from telemarketers, I won’t be pleased, but still I will not answer strange numbers. My mama taught me well.

    I can do both planned and spontaneous.

    I was picked on by a policeman once when I was a hippie freak college student.  He stopped me and claimed that my car matched the description of one involved in a hit-and-run (or something like that).  I had been on my way to meet friends at school, and he stopped me right before I turned into the University campus.  I was a little puzzled by his hostile attitude, until he asked, “Are you a student?”  I said, “Actually, I dropped out.”  He grinned and said, “Me, too!” and let me go.

    How does one measure consumer goodness?  I buy stuff, and I have credit card debt.  That’s good, isn’t it?  ðŸ˜‰

    Not much of a shopper.  I don’t have the patience for it.  I usually only get the one thing I went shopping for in the first place, unless we’re talking about books or CDs, in which case, I can shop all day.

    I rarely know what a commercial was for.  I’m too busy watching the actors.  I’m always saying, “Hey, he’s the guy in the other commercial who hugs the cable guy in the rain!”  So, yeah, I follow commercial actors the same way I follow British actors from one mini-series to another.

    I do words and numbers!

    Since telemarketers have twenty different techniques to keep you on the phone, I just hang up.  It’s not impolite, it’s just a refusal to play along.

    If I have to do the planning, I prefer spontaneity.  ðŸ˜‰

    Horrible, horrible consumer. Hate to shop, although I used to enjoy it. I DVR everything so the commercials whiz by unseen. Word person. Fairly immune to telemarketers since I almost never pick up when the landline rings.

    I used to be spontaneous but nowadays I like things planned ahead of time. Surprises put me on edge a little bit.

    In my punk rocker days I got picked on all the time by the cops. We were considered fair game if their preferred targets weren’t available.

    I’m mixed as a consumer. I certainly don’t buy what I am told to buy. I’m a mixed bag when it comes to thrift, since any time I save in one area I end up blowing any savings in another area.

    I don’t mind shopping online, until I can’t find what I am looking for (I still need to use that damned Zappos gift cert, but the site has TOO many choices). I like shopping for food, hate shopping for clothes, since that requires trying things on, which is a PITA.

    I can never remember what any commercial is for. In the olden days, it was quite clear, but these days they are so artsy that unless you pay strict attention you may fail to see that the car ad you just saw was for cars, since no actual cars appeared in the ad. The more annoying they are, the more memorable, but I won’t try any new products if the ads annoy me.

    I am definitely a word person. I don’t recall numbers very well. I have friends who can quote the exact price they ever paid for anything. They remember everyone’s birthday. They can figure out the tip in their heads.

    Like silky, I never answer my land line, which is only there to buzz in visitors, so I don’t have to hang up on them anymore.

    I like things planned most of the time, these days. Unless I’m on vacation (especially when traveling). Then spontaneity is great. And due to my hermit tendencies, if friends want to see me, a spontaneous visit is the best way to go about it, otherwise I will put them off over and over.

    good how? responsive to marketing or good for my self?

    no not really. although i catch on to the movie ads during the daily show pretty quickly.

    words.  some numbers.  more words.  some symbols.

    ignore them – i screen calls.

    i plan my spontaneous time.  hey it works for me, and my kids.

    Have you ever been picked on by police? No, I was born into circumstances that protected me. After I walked away from that I had some eye opening experiences living life without an automatic pass.

    How good a consumer are you? Do you like or hate shopping? I think I’m an informed consumer but not a particularly good one since I am usually content with what I have.

    When you watch TV, can you say afterwards what that commercial you just saw was for? No and that includes what passes for content between commercials too.

    Are you more of a word person or a number person? My natural talents tilt towards numbers but I find words much more interesting. I am interested in what you can do with numbers but you need words to communicate to non math people and if it’s important then that needs to be done.

    How do/did you handle telemarketers? they don’t get past my screening.

     I think I’ll go with “no comment” also.

     Not very. I’m actively trying to get rid of stuff, and the stuff I do like is usually from something other than a big-box store.

     Hate it.

     I DVR everything, so I can zizz through all commercials.

    Are you more of a word person or a number person?

     Words, mainly. But when forced to deal with numbers, I seem to always find patterns. I like patterns. Like when my odometer makes patterns, like 1-4-3-5-3-4-1… Yes, I’m weird.

    How do/did you handle telemarketers?

     I either ignore them (I have a magic f*ck you box…they only call once). If I feel the need to mess with someone I try to get them to donate to my favorite charity, Save the Texas Prairie Chicken. Then they hang up on ME.

    Picked on by police? Nah. My malfeasance isn’t immediately apparent. Let’s keep it that way.

    Good consumer? I recognize quality, but am pretty frugal especially as I’m heading into my retirement years.

    Shopping? Meh. I hate malls and crowds, but enjoy small quirky artsy places and small businesses.

    Commercial memory? I’m lucky if I can stay awake on my comfy couch and remember enough of the plot to make sense of the show. Now you want me to remember the commercials?

    Word or number person? Would I be writing all this drivel if I were a “number” person?

    Handling telemarketers? I used to be one, so I say very politely: “I used to work as a telemarketer, so I know your time is very valuable. There’s no chance that I’ll be buying your product/service, but I wish you good luck with your next call.” If they persist, I hang up.

    Planned or spontaneous? Either one, but spontaneous is usually more fun and mentally stimulating.
