Across the nation today, people who believe in and demand justice will be gathering.

Groups on the ground in St. Louis are calling for nationwide solidarity actions in support of Justice for Mike Brown and the end of police and extrajudicial killings everywhere. On Saturday at 1pm — one week after the murder of Mike Brown by a Ferguson police officer–we in St. Louis will gather at the location that Mike was shot in the Canfield Apartment buildings. We ask that you gather at the places in your community on Saturday where police and extrajudicial killings have occurred to memorialize lives that have been lost and demand justice by ending systemic violence upon communities of color.

Look for one in your area HERE.

  1. Headline in my right-wing rag this morning:

    Police: Victim was robbery suspect

I am surprised that they didn’t put victim in quotes.

Here is how you win the narrative:

    – Kill a boy who was walking in the street. Shoot him 4-6 times and leave his body lying in his own blood for hours.

    – Hunker down for 6 days making no statements at all about the crime thereby making the story about the militarization of the police force instead of the brutal murder of the unarmed teenager and their utter disregard for human life.

    – Hold a press conference that releases the name of the shooter, who has left the state and apparently not filed any reports on the incident or been interviewed by the FBI, and POINT OUT that the dead teenager was involved in a shoplifting incident right before he was shot.

    – Make the inference that the youth was shot because he ran away after committing a robbery

    – After the big news hit the wires “Black Thug Shot After Robbery” (unlikely to be corrected by most news outlets), appear again later in the day and mention that Officer Wilson was NOT investigating the robbery and most likely did not even know about it.

There. Whitewashed. White America shakes their collected heads and says “why can’t those black behave?” and go back to whatever they were doing.

I am hoping that the outcome is different but I am not holding my breath.

Why #BlackTwitter Was Essential to Media Outrage Over Ferguson

The outrage in #Ferguson was brought to the attention of the nation in part through the power of “Black Twitter,” the powerful online community of African-American users of the social media platform. But what is it about the microblogging platform that makes it the gathering place of choice for the African-American community?

    ~snip~

The tragedy of Ferguson is only the latest example of the power that this medium has given this community to effect their own change. The outcome of the turmoil in Ferguson is yet to reach its conclusion, but #blacktwitter will guarantee that the revolution will be Tweeted.

I’m a novice twitter user, but following Antonio French’s reports is informative, educational and very upsetting. I have to hope that the flow of information will eventually result in increased awareness in our country.

  3. @BusquedaJess: in front of the makeshift memorial where Mike Brown was killed, they’ve set up a voter registration table #Ferguson photo

I read that in the last election, only 1,500 of the 20,000 Ferguson residents voted.

The ballot box gives us, we the people, the power to change our governments.

  4. @urbanexpressive: “They are not trying to solve the murder, they’re trying to justify it”

-Benjamin L. Crump, civil rights lawyer for #MikeBrown family

The St. Louis County prosecutor will present the evidence to a grand jury next week. Not sure what they expect from that. That is the guy who claimed Gov. Nixon’s removal of the St. Louis County paramilitary force was illegal. And the shooter is gone, allowed to skip town. Maybe they will indict Nixon.

  5. @AntonioFrench: ICYMI: @GovJayNixon has declared a State of Emergency for #Ferguson and instituted a Midnight to 5AM curfew.

    I support this action.

Antonio French  said that people breaking the curfew will not have the support of the community.

People were pretty upset at the governor’s press conference. He refused to address the failure to release the autopsy and police reports. If they whitewash the murder of Michael Brown, authorities will be unable to contain the anger. The next week will be critical.

    International is in Ferguson

WASHINGTON – Amnesty International has taken “unprecedented” action to deal with the situation in Ferguson, Missouri, by sending resources the human rights group has never deployed inside the United States. …

On Saturday, after Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency and put a curfew in place in Ferguson, Amnesty International USA’s executive director, Steven W. Hawkins, issued a scathing statement.

“We criticize dictators for quelling dissent and silencing protestors with tactics like curfews, we’ll certainly speak out when it’s happening in our own backyard,” he said. “The people of Ferguson have the right to protest peacefully the lack of accountability for Michael Brown’s shooting.”
