Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome. 🙂

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

  1. Keep you fingers crossed. I need to call the Title Company today regarding the house. If all goes well we will have a sale by the end of the month.

My newest picture is called Pouring Starlight.

Talking with a friend I needed a short way to refer to her friends who had gone over to the RWNJ side and she was frustrated at not being able to get through to them with the truth.

I needed keep from getting bogged down in words and I referred to her friends as having been Foxed.

(and the windsurfers happy) here at the Eastern end of the Columbia River Gorge.  It’s 56° F outside right now, and clear as a bell.  Weather Channel calls for “abundant sunshine,” which this time of year usually means we’re going to see at least 90, but with the winds, gusty at times, they don’t think we’ll get past the mid 70’s.

I live practically right up against a bluff, and get sort of a “wind tunnel” effect across my property, making gardening a challenge.  (The first year I had the place, I woke up one morning to find my entire corn patch blown down.  I managed to salvage most of it by staking it.  Yep!  Staked corn!  I’d never heard of it either, but it worked.)  It’s no wonder our region is considered windsurfing and sailboarding Nirvana.

My sore throat has turned into a summer cold, having moved overnight to head and chest.  I really can’t take time off, so I’m just going to do my best to get out of the office on time.  Ironically, I can swallow almost painlessly today, so the original site is recovering.

Wishin’ the greatest of Tuesdays to everyone.

I can just copy & paste that subject line till Halloween. We may hit 100 this week. Sigh.

I’m thinking of putting up a “Why Can’t We Be Friends” diary on the orange place. The former preschool teacher part of me is really pained by all the ugliness. But our phones come off night service here in 1/2 hour, and I’ll be too busy to mind a diary, so I won’t.

Also, I’m leaving work early, I got an acupuncture appointment (finally) for my aching shoulder. The pain is less acute since I started using arnica, but I’m still going. Then this evening, I have my Feminist Christianity class. Really interesting reading. And especially interesting since the woman leading the class was wrongfully removed from consideration for ordination by the Southwest Texas Board at annual conference. My church is up in arms — not only is this a really stupid decision (I have not met anyone with a clearer call to ministry than Mary Ann), but they broke their own rules by the way they did it. Tonight will be the first time I’ve seen her since this happened. And we’re talking about re-imagining the church outside of the patriarchy.

So that’s my plan for the day: work, acupuncture, subvert the patriarchy. I think it’s a good plan.

A personal problem is making me feel rather gloomy but as there is little I can do about it, I will concentrate on some writing tasks.  Elder son is coming to dinner after dropping his boss off at the nearby airport late this afternoon.

Has everyone been following the NSA storm? Honestly, listening to some of the pundits yammering on the telly, you’d think Snowden’s biggest crime is not having a high school diploma!

Considering the greatest genius I’ve ever known personally didn’t have one either, this just makes me laugh.

We haven’t had to water a thing as Mother Nature has very kindly seen to it for us!  I’ve never seen my mint looking so marvelous out in the backyard.  The tomatoes I set out at the last possible moment before they expired have perked up and now seem quite happy. We went to the beach this past weekend–a big mistake, considering Andrea was pouring down buckets of water on everything–and I didn’t have time to plant the tomatoes and peppers before I left.

Padre, hope your sore throat and cold disappear as quickly as poss.!  Annoying things, summer colds.

Something GOOD that happened yesterday is that I met someone on line who loves the same two spy stories that I do–Manning Coles’ Drink to Yesterday and A Toast to Tomorrow. Thought I was the only person yet living who knew about them, so I’m looking forward to chatting with her further on the subject.

    Everyone have a good day!

maybe a shower later.  Checked the weather in Colorado (Woodland Park) and it will be in the low 80s with humidity between 11-20%.  The high desert can be a trial sometimes but a boon to the makers of body butter and sun screen (UV is at 11 today).  Crispy critter time.  Kelley thinks Iriti, trs & Khloe will arrive mid-afternoon, just in time for a rest before heading to the deck to enjoy a cooling mountain evening.

I haven’t been feeling well at all which generally makes me silent. Hoping to find some answers soon but in the meantime I’ll probably be scarce.

Today I’m hoping to keep up the pace I set for myself yesterday and continue whipping the apartment into shape. I made good progress yesterday.

Last evening I met my stalwart friend L at the pub for a couple of beers. We decided that we were going to go in together on the purchase of a bottle of Armagnac, which is too expensive for either of us to buy alone. (I was once given a tiny snifter of the stuff in a French restaurant which was listed on the menu as costing $60. For a thimbleful!)

Also, L wants to go with me to the LGBT Pride celebration at the end of the month to cheer on my sister, who will be marching in the parade. L is straight, but a solid ally. 🙂

Went for a run before eight so it wasn’t to bad but it is gonna be a hot one today.  Rainy tonight/tomorrow.

On tap for today:  laundry, playing, possible trip to the splash park but don’t tell the kids in case I change my mind.

seem to be violent storms in the blogosphere these last few days. So pleased to see calm sailing in Mooseland.

but close (and just as muggy).  Anybody got news of the travelers?  I’ve read the diary (and rec’d as an informative and probably needed discussion regarding MM) as to why we shouldn’t rec this diary – I’m not sure I agree since I frequently read and appreciate but don’t comment but I will abide by the diarist’s wishes in this.  Internet down for a while this morning.  Enrolling students for Fall, monitoring Fall class enrollment (how I caught a class that should have been open but wasn’t and got that fixed), “mining data” for the Annual Report, starting to work on Spring classes, site visit for a disputed cell tower this afternoon, and QC Finance Committee meeting this evening.  My tummy hurts.  I’ll try to get back and read stuff before I head out to the site visit.

But so far with very limited success. I really hope there’s at least partial sun this afternoon because I have no urge to go walking today under grey skies AGAIN.

Maybe I’ll just plan on staying indoors today, doing some housework and then just relaxing. I’ve been pretty good lately about getting exercise so I wouldn’t feel too guilty.

BTW, I’m very cheered by the responses I’ve been getting this morning to my suggestion to some local folks at the GOS to meet up for our Pride celebration. Such things are always best enjoyed in congenial company!

I was fine for most of it, but the last ten minutes or so I just wanted outta there, and said so. My skin felt prickly and the hair on my arms was standing up. They tell you 20 minutes but it was longer than that.

About a quarter of the way in, I started eating my way around a gingerbread house. The standpipe was Twix, the garden was different flavor gumdrops-cherry, strawberry, lemon, orange, licorice-Eeww! Spit that out! The living room ceiling was white pecan bark with Tootsie Roll cross-pieces. The roof tiles were jelly beans. The sheets and pillows were cotton candy and marshmallows. The windowpanes were rock candy. I went to the library but I couldn’t figure out what the books were and I ran out of house.

I now have a CD of my insides to look at. Maybe later.

  15. was frozen cheese ravioli topped with the last of a jar of red sauce, and iceberg lettuce with black olives and fresh tomato, topped with purchased salad dressing.

There surely are easy ways to make this healthier. Homemade salad dressing on darker greens, for one. Homemade red sauce, maybe tomato-butter sauce! on the ravioli. But what about the ravioli? Does anyone regularly make their own from scratch?

  16. is there a problem with Moose servers? Seems like the connect/refresh time is much greater here than for any other site I use. This may be true for the last couple of days. Not sure when I noticed it.
