Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Tuesday 3/5/13

Good morning, Bombazinos! It’s Terrible Tuesday. Terrible because I have a gazillion conference calls to do at work and will have even less time to hang out (not that I have time on good days).

Interrogatories

If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick (I call dibs on Aragorn!)?  How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place? How many different cuisines? Who were you named after? What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of? Who is your favorite comedian of all time?

On This Day

In 1616, Nicolaus Copernicus’s book, De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium was banned by the Catholic Church. No science allowed! (The Catholic church nowadays is far more amenable to science than any Fundementalist ones.)

In 1623, the first alcohol temperance law in the colonies was enacted in Virginia.

In 1624, the upper class was exempted from whipping by legislators in Virginia. I think that law is still in effect.

In 1845, Congress appropriated $30,000 to ship camels to the western U.S. The Camel Corps didn’t work out, due to the animals scaring the horses and also to their nasty dispositions (kind of like working with a Republican Congress now).

In 1770, the event that came to be known as the Boston Massacre took place as British soldiers, taunted by a crowd of colonists, opened fire, killing five people.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered a four-day bank holiday in order to stop large amounts of money from being withdrawn from banks.

In 1933, the Nazi Party won 44 percent of the vote in German parliamentary elections, enabling it to join with the Nationalists to gain a slender majority in the Reichstag.

In 1946, Winston Churchill used the phrase “Iron Curtain” in his speech at Westminster College, Missouri.

In 1982, the Soviet probe Venera 14 landed on Venus. It lasted 57 minutes, longer than the expected 32.

In 2004, Martha Stewart was convicted of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she’d unloaded her Imclone Systems Inc. stock just before the price plummeted. If she were a man she probably would have gotten a slap on the hand.

  1. about Multiple Personality Day.

    Answers to questions:

If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick?

I would pick a real hero, someone who really puts it on the line to help real people. Someone who works for human rights or civil rights. But it’s a little too early for me to pick names.

How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place? How many different cuisines?

    None; none.

    Who were you named after?

I was named after my brother and other older sibs were named. (Is that what you mean?)

What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of?

A mug I bought off the clearance table in the china department at Dillards.

Who is your favorite comedian of all time?

Who makes me laugh most? Jim. But he isn’t really a comedian.

    Here are a few answers:

If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick (I call dibs on Aragorn!)?  Doctors without borders.

How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place? Two–the local Chinese restaurant and Chuckles pizza.

    How many different cuisines? two

Who were you named after? No one. My mom just liked the name. Pamela was one of the ten most popular names around 1950. If you meet someone named Pam she is almost certainly in her early 60s. It was the boomer equivalent of Tiffany. Today it is about 900th in popularity for baby names. I named all my kids after various favorite uncles.

What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of? We have lots of nice mugs, but we bought some cheap and large mugs at the dollar store that we use for morning coffee. I have some lovely English tea cups, but I save them for special occasions. I have a complete English tea set that I bought when I lived in the UK in the 70s (it is now vintage), as well as tea cups that I inherited from my grandmother and from my great-grandmother.

Who is your favorite comedian of all time? Betty White.

  3. It will be a fast way to get through the next two years of the 113th Congress. With an 8-hour day, we would be done with March 5th in another 40 minutes!

    This … 🙁

#Sequester means 775,000 at-risk families lose access to food and baby formula, but good news! They can still get a subsidy for buying a jet

       – The Daily Edge (@TheDailyEdge) March 5, 2013

Did you retweet God’s tweet just to see what would happen?

LOL … they used to “means test” their whippings?

In 1624, the upper class was exempted from whipping by legislators in Virginia. I think that law is still in effect.

I believe the riot in the laundromat was caused by someone leaving their washer unattended for 32 seconds after the last cycle had ended and the next person in line removing the clothes and putting them on the folding table that had just been used to change a baby’s diaper on. Gak! That brings back bad memories.

Have a great day, Floja Roja!

Side kick:, Han Solo!  Because then I would not only be a sidekick, I would have a sidekick.

Menus:  I cook everything.  We do have a pizza menu clipped to the board but I don’t remember the last time it was used.

Named after:  my parents didn’t name us after anybody, they just picked the most common names of the time.  In the mid seventies I think you were required to name your daughter Jennifer Lynn right?  Oh well.

What do I drink my coffee out of:  a mug

Comedian:  the more George carlin I hear the more I like him.  I also love bob Newhart and carol burnett.  More current comedian? – Eddie Izard.

    Supergirl?

    A few.

    A few.

    I am a Jr.

I don’t really drink either one.  So on the odd occasion that I do, it’s usually out of some carry-out’s cardboard cup.

Wow, there are so many different kinds of comedy that it’s hard to compare them.  For the one-liners, it’s Stephen Wright.  For movies, it’s Woody Allen.  For total goofiness, I like Gallagher.

  6. If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick (I call dibs on Aragorn!)?  The tenth Doctor Who.

How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place? None

How many different cuisines? I create my own recipes. I do American, Irish, Italian, Chinese, Tex-Mex, and Cajun currently.

Who were you named after? My Dad just liked the name Michele. My middle name of Elaine is from an old girlfriend of his. How he got that by Mom I don’t know. 😉

What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of? I have a whole collection of coffee mugs. Favorites include a Marvin the Martian head and several with unicorns on them.

Who is your favorite comedian of all time? Robin Williams

  7. Which one of me will answer the questions? This is difficult since it is Multiple Personality Day.

    Sidekick? – ??

    Menus? – None.

Named? – Maybe an uncle. No one ever told me.

    Drink? – Coffee.

Comedian? – Tie between Newhart and Carlin.

This brought back some memories. Jay Silverheels, Canadian actor (b. 1912) – Canadian Mohawk First Nations actor. He was well known for his role as Tonto, the faithful American Indian companion of the character, The Lone Ranger.

princess leia.  or else paul farmer.

    2. 2.

popular name of the day. brilliant idea if you have a common surname.

the biggest mug in the cupboard. i use one mug all day.

jon stewart.  stephen colbert.  and their ilk.

  9. raina

I’ll be Robin II to Robin I. Poor boy needs a sidekick.

I only have one delivery menu for a Pizza Hut, and only picked it up because they’d just opened. Unfortunately, they don’t deliver to our place, no one does. Too far out.

I mentioned before that I was named after a tugboat from my mom’s favorite TV show from way back when, didn’t I?

I drink mostly out of a plastic San Antonio Spurs cup I got from one of the games I went to. Going to another one in a couple weeks, btw.

Who is your favorite comedian of all time? Stand-up or actors? I confess I’m meh on most stand-up comedians, but I did like Kevin James. Actors, can’t think of “all time” but I do miss John Candy.

  10. slksfca

Wishing everyone a very happy whatever the hell day of the week this is.

Named for my Uncle Scott, who was about 15 or 16 when I was born, so it’s not like I was named for a Great Man or anything, just a nice-enough teenage kid growing up in the ’50s.

I have a very few delivery flyers laying about, just places in my immediate neighborhood that deliver. As it happens, they represent a wide variety of ethnic cuisines.

As most of you will doubtless recall, my favorite coffee mug recently met its doom. I am not able to replace it immediately but will be announcing auditions.

Carol Burnett is the comedian for me, though I also love the work of Ellen deGeneris and Tina Fey.

  11. JG in MD

Sidekick to … ? I’m a sidekick by nature. I’ll have to think about that one.

    Menus? None

Named after? My sister Gerry was born nine years before me. I think my mother thought “Gerry and Jill” would be cute. May I say, many years later, ick.

I love my coffee mug. It’s pretty, bought on a long-ago shopping trip with a friend. Unfortunately, she turned Republican and we parted ways on Election Day 2008. Haven’t seen her since. I miss her.

    Favorite comedian?
I’m with jk2003: George Carlin, Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett. I haven’t heard standup by Eddie Izard but I loved his TV show about the gypsies.

  12. JG in MD

Of course, Michele-Robin Williams! (I have a multiple-choice mind in an essay-question world.)

How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place?  Two, I think?

How many different cuisines?  Both for Pizza/Italian

Who were you named after?  Nobody; my parents just picked names they liked.

What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of?  I have a 20oz WaWa travel mug that I use while at work.  At home, it varies, we have a lot of mugs.  The bigger the better, usually.  🙂

Who is your favorite comedian of all time?  Tough one.  For TV stuff, Jon Stewart / The Daily Show.  Stand-Up?  Lewis Black primarily; Jeff Foxworthy/Bill Engvall depending on my mood.  Sometimes George Carlin, but I really have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to him.

  15. If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick (I call dibs on Aragorn!)?

    Mary Russell

How many delivery menus do you have sitting around your place? How many different cuisines?

Total menus – maybe 50. Cuisines? Probably 10. (I love NY!)

    Who were you named after?

My first name (Peter) is just one my parents liked. My middle name (Leslie) is after one of my dad’s partners who was instrumental in getting him a job. Oddly, that is my wife’s first name.

What do you drink your coffee (or tea) out of?

The bathtub.  No, just kidding. A mug.

Who is your favorite comedian of all time?

That’s too hard. George Carlin. Lenny Bruce. Stephen Wright. Groucho. Jon Stewart. Stephen Colbert. There are too many good ones. And that’s not counting funny writers

  16. anotherdemocrat

If you could be sidekick to any hero out there, who would you pick (I call dibs on Aragorn!)?  : P. Well if I can’t have Aragorn…… I’ll tale Cap’n Tightpants, Malcolm Reynolds. How many different cuisines? 0

Who were you named after? No one, I think my mom just liked the name
