The Daily F Bomb, Wednesday 2/6/13

Buenas Dias, Bomberinos! Funny how these morning things keep inexorably rolling around again and again, faster and faster… unless you’re sick or have insomnia.

I have questions. Do you have insomnia often? How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something? Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things? Are you a morning person? If not, what time of day do you shine? Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any?

On This Day

In 1788, Massachusetts became the sixth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

In 1820, the first 86 African American immigrants sponsored by the American Colonization Society (a coalition made up mostly of evangelicals and Quakers who supported abolition but who did not wish to socialize or interact with free blacks – in other words, racists) departed New York to start a settlement in present-day Liberia.

In 1899, the Treaty of Paris, a peace treaty between the United States and Spain, was ratified by the Senate, ending the Spanish-American War.

In 1900, the international arbitration court at The Hague was created when the Senate of the Netherlands ratified an 1899 peace conference decree.

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act 1918 was passed in the U.K., giving women over the age of 30 who met minimum property qualifications the right to vote. It was not until 1928 that the right was extended to all women over 21 with no property requirements.

In 1933, the 20th Amendment to the Constitution went into effect. It moved the start of presidential, vice-presidential and congressional terms from March to January.

In 1952, Elizabeth II became Queen of England on the death of her father, George VI.

In 1998, Washington National Airport was renamed Ronald Reagan National Airport, though most people I know refuse to call it that.

Rarely. I get up and read. My intentions are to do something but I usually end up blobbing. Morning person now, this was not always so. Not too early, though. I’m best before noon and again in early evening.  Not really.

  2. Do you have insomnia often? How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something?

Yes. I fall asleep easily but often wake up in the middle of the night and am unable to go back to sleep. I usually read.

Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things?

Mostly I am home, kicking back, reading, tweeting and blogging. But I also like to eat out and I play bridge.

Are you a morning person? If not, what time of day do you shine?

I am a morning person; slowest time of day for me is mid-afteryawn.  Oops, I mean afteryawn. Darn. NOON. After NOON.

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any?

Only in the Charles Dickens sense. Oh, and the ghost of the Republican party (may it be born soon).

Insomnia?  Not really, sometimes I stay up reading but I don’t think it’s insomnia, I think it’s a good book.

Relax or do stuff?  Depends on what needs to be done, if truly free time would rather knit in the winter, summer would rather sit outside and listen to baseball on the radio or work in the veggie garden.

I am not a morning person but I live with three of them. I think about 8:30 is normal for me but my kids get up at 6:30.  I just try not to talk as I might say nasty things.

    Ghosts?  Nope

Do you have insomnia often? How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something?  I never used to have trouble getting to sleep but as I get older I have more and more trouble going to sleep and/or staying asleep.  Now, if I’m still awake after an hour I take a low dose Ambien.

Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things?  I’m pretty much a lazy old girl and enjoy reading.  Have begun to enjoy my daily outings to the gym.

Are you a morning person? If not, what time of day do you shine?

I am a morning person. a disgustingly early riser.  Sleeping later now (5:30-6 am).

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any?

Never actually seen one BUT:  one of my co-workers at Borders committed suicide and for months thereafter, me an a few others were startled to round a corner and sense his presence.  Sad and creepy.

  6. Do you have insomnia often?

    – No, sleep the sleep of the blithely ignorant.

Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things?

     – Could you define that R word, please?

    Are you a morning person?

     -You betcha!

    Do you believe in ghosts?

    No.

  7. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

went into effect on this date in 1933.  Actually, Section 5 of the Amendment provides:

Section 5. Sections 1 and 2 shall take effect on the 15th day of October following the ratification of this article.

The Amendment was ratified on January 23, 1933, making the effective date for the 20th Amendment October 15 of that year.

    * Do you have insomnia often?

    not really.

    * How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something?

when it happens, I literally count.  usually that works.

    * Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things?

    both.  depends on my mood.

    * Are you a morning person? If not, what time of day do you shine?

not really.  sometimes i have a good period around 11am, but i am generally unproductive.

    Do you believe in ghosts?

    no.

    bubbapod for the day:

Marianne von Werefkin, Russian-Swiss painter – i wonder if that is lake constance, with those mountains in the background and the artist’s swiss-ness.

Do you have insomnia often? How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something?

20 years of sleeping pills and a nightcap or two; there is no fighting it… I just wind up awake for so long, I get weird and kind of crazy.

Leisure time: I don’t recall this leisure time of which you speak, but if it were to happen, I’d go out; I am stuck inside so much that I feel constant cabin fever.

Mostly I am working, cooking dinner, helping my son with his homework homework, doing errands, grocery shopping, researching, reading for academic purposes, and writing (not creative). Sometimes I break to watch a movie or go to a bar we like.

I like to hike, travel, go to the symphony, museums, concerts, dinner parties, cocktail parties, walk around, people-watch, garden if I have one, wrte poetry, build things, sew things, oil paint,  take pictures, sit in cafes or bars or parks; I’m very on the go when not busy.

Are you a morning person? If not, what time of day do you shine?

I am a night person trapped in a world of 6 am’s. If left to my own devices, I will quickly start going to bed between 4-6 am otherwise. Makes me feel like a shift worker. I drink a ton of coffee.

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any?

Yes because of yes (but I don’t talk about it).

  11. princesspat

Because of my old friend insomnia I’ve got an even sleepier brain this morning. But I have lots of leisure time to day, so shall I garden, listen to music, read my book, sew something, visit my favorite antique store, or just snooze and read online? The ghost of my former self says I should be more productive…..but she always got me in trouble so I’m not minding her anymore!

    Having deja vu. Anyways…

I completed the patioette yesterday. It’s not perfect, but since its main function is to be a snake spotter, it looks pretty good. It rained this morning so it’s wet in this picture.

Insomnia about once a week. I usually watch TV then I’m able to fall asleep, usually around 5 am. If it persists beyond 2 days, I take a Xanax.

Usually I do crafts or read.

I was never a morning person, though I now get up earlier than I used to. I’m best after 8 am.

I don’t really believe in them, but when I’m home alone at night, I do get scared of them. LOL.

    And there are answers:

Do you have insomnia often? Yes, it’s the meds.

How do you handle it, do you fight it and try to sleep or give up and do something? I just lie there and wish for sleep. Or watch How It’s Made on the Science Channel…

Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things? It depends on my mood.

Are you a morning person? Not hardly.

If not, what time of day do you shine? Late. The later the better. Of course, “late” is variable.

Do you believe in ghosts? Yes. I think there might be other dimensions.

If so, have you encountered any? Yes. My grandfather and my uncle.

    Happy Birthday, silks!

(And the artwork was very nice today, Floja – I do love Klimt.)

  14. Avilyn

Do you have insomnia often?   Nope, I can fall dead asleep in about 5 minutes

Leisure time: Do you kick back and relax (we call it “blobbing”) or do you get out and do things?  90% of the time, relax.

Are you a morning person? Only if you count 1am as “morning”

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any? I believe in spirits, yes.  Mainly encountered through dreams.

    Oh, and Happy Birthday, Scott!

  15. JG in MD

Do you have insomnia often? How do you handle it? It’s the meds. I had insomnia for a year, then gave up and started on Trazodone. Now I sleep well.

    Leisure time:
I have way too much time on my hands, and I stay home too much. I try not to hit the sofa until 6 pm.

Are you a morning person? Total morning person. Wake up perky, fuzzy and dim by 4:00.

Do you believe in ghosts? If so, have you encountered any? Yes to both.

featured birthday and dead day folks today – don’t know about which of these if either might apply to him , but one of my favorite people names is Stand Waite. Pronounced , I’m told , as Stand Waitey. He was Cherokee Chief born in East but hauled or walked to Indian Territory during Removal , Or Trail Of Tears as so many prefer to call the dastardly actions which probablty saved Cherokee from total extinction by militias of Georgia and Tennessee. Stand Waite was the only Cherokee who held the rnk of General in The Confederate Army – which does follow the pattern of so many oustanding members of the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole) of having amazingly convoluted life stories.

He (Stand Waite) was distinguished in his Civil War career by taking his troops back and forth  through Oklahoma and Arkansas to wherever there was little danger of engaging any Union troops. IIRC , at one time his troops did capture a payroll, but whether it was Union or Confederate I don’t remember at the moment , LOL!

We have been hated about forever by other Indian Nations for such duplicity nd sneakiness , mostly avoidance of committing by word or battle until other enemies had worn each other out or down. It’s possibly technically taboo for me to talk about this in this forum since I have not been chosen by Tribal Council , or any group of elders , or anyone  , but since no one is going to kick my ass for it it’s OK. THere is nothing here you can’t get from a book published by any of a number of state University Press  publishers , some of whose authors have been of blood , though usually mixed.
