The Lounge: rescuing nonhumans

I have always loved non- human animals and plants. I feel a great affinity for life forms different from me, those people I don’t understand but try to know and sometimes protect. I believe that they all speak to us in some manner, if we are willing to at least try to listen. What do you think?

by a cat a couple of years ago and she’s been teaching me feline ever since. It’s been fun learning the difference between feline and canine even if I get it mixed up some times.

He can saw “Out now, please”–naturally.  And it’s not just us who has heard him.  He said it to the vet during an examination, and the vet jumped about a foot and said, “Did he just say . . .?”  Our cat has a reputation as a very polite kitty at the vets.

And my old cat, who I raised from a too-young kitten, once startled me by saying “mama.”

Of course, we deserve the disbelieving looks we get from our cats when we stare at them and say “Did you just say something?”  I’m waiting for the disgusted reply of “Yes, of course I did, are you deaf?”

Side of cats.  When a friendly cat comes we are sure to be extra sweet.  I would take a grouchy dog over a grouchy cat any day of the week.  I love all animals except those that have taken a chunk out of me 🙂

after earning a BS in Biology with an emphasis in Botany, spending almost all of my life gardening, and coming from a family of amateur horticulturalists, I still manage to be Ebola on two legs to every houseplant I have tried to raise. I love them from a distance, for their own safety.

As far as other animals go, horses have my number and rabbits, ferrets, and chinchilla cause a life threatening allergic reaction, but everything else seems to bond well with me. Every fur or feather friend we have ever taken in has eventually become “mine.”

Of course they speak to me-how else to make me do their bidding?

We’re looking into the possibility of a seizure alert dog for my husband, and thought about training our wicked smart, hyper alert Rat Terrier, who already seems to know when something is off with my spouse. Problem, according to a trainer, is he is too bonded with ME. So we may wind up getting a pup and going through the training. Fresno, the Rat Terrier of Doom, will not be best pleased at the prospect, I can tell you. He’s already registered disapproval at the conversation.
