What do you call a baby Moose? Overdose of Joy Open Thread

I love to make food for my baby and watch her eat.   A game arose between us from when she was learning to talk that I’d ask her “big hungry or little hungry”.  We always knew the answer to the question it was big hungry, but the ritual was comforting intimate.  Well one day 9 months ago as I’m preparing to do my barbecue magic I ran the question by her again big hungry or little hungry?  She said she was little hungry.  I walked away as waves of wonder hit me that was strange huh? Is she sick? Oh no what’s the matter!

She didn’t make me wait to long she sat us me down and told me she was expecting, oh so that’s why you’re little hungry.  9 months later the second most precious gift I’ve ever received is here.  Behold Sean Lucien my Grandchild I love more than my next breath.  Welcome to the world baby Grampy has been dying to meet you.

My own baby negotiated over 30 hours of labor to see that face.  That I could produce a creature of such power and grace will always be a source of amazement to me.

  1. Beautiful babies, your babies make.

The complexities of life subsume to the power of the smallest human faces. Bless the newborn, for they hold the hope of a joyous future in their tiny hands.

Isn’t the miracle of life incredible? Congrats Grandpa Adept, I share your joy. Can’t wipe this silly grin off my face now. :~)

  3. What a beautiful baby.

A few years ago, I wrote a poem for a friend who had recently become a grandmother. With some minor adjustments (the original was for a baby girl), it’s a suitable gift for you, as well. Hope you like it.

    Joy

I stand watching as he sleeps

    Watching this tiny baby boy

    More precious than any possession

A tiny bundle of pure joy

I reach in and smooth his blanket

He seems so peaceful in his sleep

My hand hovers over his face

My love is so strong I almost weep

I try to turn and walk away

    Minutes later I’m still there

    Watching this small sweet treasure

That’s been given into our care

I think of all the changes

He has brought into our lives

    Now small troubles are forgotten

Our one goal – that he thrives

I wonder, “why were we so blessed?”

And can only stand and stare

I would gladly give my life for him

Then, I say a heartfelt prayer

I pray to God to watch over him

    This precious, blameless child

He brings joy to all who see him

When he was born the angels smiled.

    I stand watching…

    I hope you like Vivaldi

  5. I’m looking forward to grandchildren: all the best of parenting with none of the proletarian slog. I remember my ex mother in law had a fridge magnet.

My grandchildren are great. I should have had them first.

But a quarter of your DNA is good enough to celebrate. Who needs half?

Don’t ask me why; I’m generally a “hand” gal but that nose has me mesmerized.

Welcome to the world, Sean.  And congratulations, grampy.

since this is an open thread I’d just like to let the Moose in general, and John Allen in particular, know that I just ate a yummy bowl of homemade chili with a side of homemade cornbread.

  8. Baby  Mommy and Daddy went home yesterday, and on the way home she discovered something.  She told me she looked back on her own upbringing and some of the disciplines etc. she received and told her Mother and I she had no idea how much we could love her, but she knows now.  We probably have 500 pictures of the entire process and once they get approved by the principle I’ll litter this diary with them

He’s so cute I can’t stand it.  OH!  To those familiar with the tradition of new boy admiration,  the kid is hung in the tradition of his African American roots!!  Funniest thing his little package is brown as I am.

  9. I joke with the boy (heh! I’m going to have to change my nickname for him) anyway he and my daughter were high school sweethearts.  I like to remember the moment I saw him look at her when he didn’t know anyone else was looking I knew he was never letting go.  Anyway he really was a boy when I met him and to have had the opportunity to watch him round into formidable manhood has been a treat and an honor.  I can remember looking at my baby like this and making promises.  It is a blessing to know he will work as hard at keeping them as I have.

  10. I think it was from Ken Burns’ The Civil War, but I don’t rightly remember.  There was a scene describing Florence Nightengale I think and Lincoln said “she ranks me”.  After having sat through at least 30 of the hours my baby was in labor I now have to say my own child ranks me.  She went through the process having never lost her sense of humor she made it look easy and it was not.

Men know nothing about this we never can and that’s alright we’re blessed with those who do.

I’ve never been one to be at war with my emotions.  I’ve always thought tears of both joy and pain were great tools for the well adjusted but as I was going through the pictures I noticed a whole bunch of projectile crying.  I’m over it now, and if you think this is something you should see the wedding pics.  My baby is going to be a week old tomorrow and I already feel like he’s putting me in a time machine and accelerating me.  I’m trying to stay out of his parents house but it’s ever so hard!

I will teach him to appreciate the light year and understand Brubeck I dare him to think of a question I won’t get him to understand the answer to.  He will know Sirius and Andromeda and be ready when the UFOs come.  He is just the latest and most precious link in why I fight now greedy Grampy that I am I’m wondering if they want to try for a girl.
