Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Freak Out!

One more “trial balloon” on the debt ceiling negotiations from an unnamed source and the Left and Right blogospheres will come completely unglued and/or collide.

I have no idea where any negotiations stand at this point and neither does anyone else willing to talk on the record.  But that doesn’t stop the ubiquitous “anonymous” from coming out and claiming to know some thing or another about where one side or the other (or both) stands.  And, despite being wrong more often than not said one side or the other (or both) begins to freak out 🙂 and claim their man or woman has sold out.

I’m certainly not saying anyone needs to STFU or get complacent or not be concerned.  But, Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick Pictures, Images and Photos , can folks get a grip and maybe consider the source or at least temper the outrage with some constraint?

Feel free to use this as an open thread.  (Like you need permission.)

There are going to have to be cuts to entitlements whether liberals like it or not. There should be revenues, but there probably won’t be because the votes aren’t there. It’s going to be a race to who blinks first, and the blinkers are going to be the Democrats because bless their hearts, they aren’t going to let the country go into default no matter what, in part because the very things they’re defending are lost anyway in a default.

but I’m also the guy who thinks this whole divided government/minority’s ability to block shit crap is stupid. When a party wins an election, it should be able to govern, perhaps if that was true, Dems never would’ve lost in 2010 anyway (but I doubt it, because I, unlike others, don’t think unemployment cost them the election)

Let the Republicans do what they want to Medicare and SS, maybe people won’t make the mistake of voting for them again, and if they do, then we’ll know that we’re wasting our energy protecting the wrong people.

Odetta and Tennessee Ernie singing Woody Guthrie and Merle Travis.  Let’s pipe it into every building in the US and pirate it onto every network and cable channel.

    Ought to do the trick.

I use my mother as a political barometer because she tends to be good at measuring the country’s political mood. She turned against Bush when the country did, she turned against Iraq when the country did. Her approval of Bill Clinton seemed to coincide with the countries.

Today, Obama lost her, because, she said, “he went too fast and did too much. He should’ve slowed down. It doesn’t seem to be working.”

    Whatever that means.

I’ve got so much overtime I’d be fired for submitting in on my timecard.  At least I’ll get a couple of “extra” days off at some point.

So his attempt to get a public against raising the debt ceiling to realize they should support it by telling them they’re not going to get the help they need if it doesn’t get raised is “cruel and self serving.”

    The commenter says this

It may have worked to make the republicans look bad, but it also served to terrorize the people who depend on these programs.

Yes, because until last week, those same people DIDN’T WANT TO RAISE THE GODDAMN DEBT CEILING!!!!

Explain to me again why using the bully pulpit is a good idea?

This captures how I feel at present almost perfectly (though it’s a bit over-determined by my fanboydom).  It’s a lesser known tune, and one of the best…ever.

3-4 billion. Details will come after raising debt ceiling, with triggers applying to implimentaion of some aspects of Obamacare and the Bush tax cuts. Remains to be seen if it can be sold to the house.

I’ve been hearing commentators from the left going beserk over the thought of adjustments to entitlements, just as tea baggers have been getting all freaky about taxes and revenues.

If you accept that we have divided government (as I do), I can be okay with a compromise. A lot of the entitlment reform can tied to means testing(back door tax). I think the hope is for reforming the tax code to somthing simpler.

I’d link to it but I’m on my phone and somewhat challenged.  But he talks about doing a” big deal” that is balanced with cuts and with revenue.  If anyone can read it and tell me what’s so unreasonable about what he wrote I’d appreciate it.  Seriously.  What he wrote is so at odds with what  people seem to think is going to happen.  Is the president saying one thing in public and another in private?
