Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Open Thread – I Haz Catz

It’s the middle of February. Spring still seems far away. Politics is in its usual effed up condition. The economy is still in the doldrums. Life sucks. Except when you have a cat in your lap. Here are a few pet pics to cheer you up.

And here’s a belated pic for Valentine’s Day. I was going to post a photo of the flowers I bought for my daughter-in-law, but ended up posting this one of the Gerber daisies she bought for my son.

What’s on your mind this fine February day? Got some pics to share?

  1. Now I remember why I don’t make cabbage rolls more often. They’re a heck of a lot of work. Oh well, they’re in the oven now and the cleanup is done. All that’s left is the eating.

There was a lot of work to do, unfortunately, but I guess it’s better to have too much work to do than no work.  I feel a little bad about not making Valentine’s day more festive.

I have to say that I’m more a dog person now than a cat person.  It’s probably a coping mechanism – I had a lot of cats when I was growing up, but they tended to come to bad ends when they encountered farm equipment.  At least my two turtles never get into that sort of trouble.  I remember when I was in college and my future wife rented an apartment near campus for the summer from a professor – the rent was cheap but she had to look after two Persian cats that were worth something like $10,000 apiece.  I had come to visit for a few days, during which she had to work at her summer job.  At some point, I left the door to the apartment open while getting something outside.  Afterward, I couldn’t find one of the cats.  I searched outside the apartment, assuming that the cat had escaped, but the door closed behind me and I did not have a duplicate key.  I then attempted to enter the apartment’s kitchen from the ground floor, via the fire escape.  My wife returned to the apartment at the moment that I was attempting to jump through the kitchen window.  It turned out that the cat was hiding in a corner of one of the closets – how it got there, I’ll never know.

February’s always a hard month.  There’s none of the afterglow from the holidays, as there is in January, and it’s still cold as hell and dark.  But, I think there’s reason to be hopeful.  The administration has made mistakes, but it seems like they’ve admitted the obvious – that they need to use a firmer hand in enacting their agenda.  Plus, even if some Democrats are removed from office in the 2010 elections, it is possible that the remaining officeholders will be more progressive than those who don’t make it.  It’s not like Congress can be more ineffectual than it is in its current state.

Please, I hope nobody gets the bright idea of following Mydd down the stylistic gurgler with this site.  I find that place unreadable, unnavigable and about as attractive as a 7-11 after a hectic weekend.

OFA has gotten over 7,000,000 volunteer hours banked .  Their original goal was 500,000 according to the email I got.
