Fox News Belittles and Mocks the Canadian Military. UPDATED

Sure some US TV shows make fun of Canada sometimes, but it’s usually in a fun lighthearted manner. This segment by Fox News however was not even close to being funny, and lacks any respect for the Canadian Military and Canadians in general.

This utter and complete failure came on the heels of a report that 4 Canadian soldiers died today in Afghanistan.

By a high proportion, Canada has suffered more in losses in Afghanistan than any NATO ally. (The US population, at nearly 300 million, is ten times larger than Canada; the UK population is double the size).

Coalition deaths in Afghanistan by country

USA: 594

UK: 152

Canada: 116

Germany: 31

France: 27

Spain: 25

Denmark: 23

Netherlands: 18

Italy: 13

Australia: 10

Poland: 9

Romania: 9

Czech Republic: 3

Estonia: 3

Norway: 3

Hungary: 2

Portugal: 2

South Korea: 2

Sweden: 2

Finland: 1

Latvia: 1

Lithuania: 1

TOTAL: 1,045

I honestly cannot believe that people watch this network and think that it is good.  The segment above is part of the Fox News Red Eye Report and they can be reached at redeye@foxnews.com.

[UPDATE]

Fox News host Gutfeld apologized Monday to Canadians amid outrage over comments he and his guests made on a late-night talk show about the country’s soldiers and their role in Afghanistan. He said that his comments “may have been misunderstood” and in no way were meant to disrespect “the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military.”

Right – I see how his comments could have been misunderstood.

  1. I can pick on Canada all day, but with me it’s family.  These uninformed douchebags aren’t qualified to even joke.

Yeah, Canada’s military could use a lot more of everything.  That being said, if you want a sniper to take someone out in Afghanistan what you want – by definition – is for the Canadians to show up.  Corporal Rob Furlong of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry set a world record by taking out an Al Qaeda bad guy in 2002 from more than a mile and a half away.  According to a New Zealand soldier who had just returned from there about a year ago, “The French hide in their bunkers up in the north where nothing is going on, the Yanks rely too much on airpower, and the Canadians ride around hanging off their jeeps like a bunch of maniacs with feathers tied to their rifles and scare the hell out of the Taliban.”

Canada should give their soldiers more support and better gear, but you can’t take a single thing away from what those soldiers do.

  2. that anyone who mocks Canada’s military is completely ignorant of the history of the 20th century. The ignorance of that panel was painfully obvious to anyone with a little knowledge of Canada. And if you are ignorant of the history of one of our two neighbors then you are pretty ignorant. The IQ average for that panel would have probably gone up if they’d added Joe the Plumber to it.

Disclaimer: I’ve got an advantage when it comes to interest in Canada. For most of my life, I’ve lived within an hour’s drive of the Canadian border. One of my cousins used to be an engineer in charge of the maintenance for the Bluewater Bridge at Port Huron/Sarnia and the Ambassador bridge over the Detroit river to Windsor. Toronto is my favorite city – US or Canadian. Wish we had a bullet train running out of Michigan to Toronto and then down to Buffalo and eventually NY City.

to boot camp. Casting dispersions at anyone active military is absolutely gutless, particulary for a group of people who make a living sucking up the gas that Limbaugh and Hannity emit.

I don’t watch FOX news. It seems a complete waste of time.

A Fox News host apologized Monday to Canadians in the face of widespread outrage over comments he and his guests made on a late-night talk show.

The statement came hours after a request by the Canadian government for an apology over remarks about this country’s military that were described as “despicable” and “disgusting.”

Greg Gutfeld, host of the controversial segment on Fox’s Red Eye show, said he never intended to make light of Canadian military efforts in Afghanistan. “However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood,” Mr. Gutfeld said in a statement released by Fox News.

In the Fox News segment, widely aired on the Internet, Mr. Gutfeld said the Canadian military “wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants.”

“Isn’t this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country?” he said. “They have no army.”

Defence Minister Peter MacKay requested an apology just before leaving for Canadian Forces Base Trenton, where he was to attend a homecoming ceremony with the families of the latest soldiers killed.

“It’s crass, it’s insensitive, it’s in fact disgusting, given the timing,” Mr. MacKay told CTV News.

Dude is still an big, giant ass, though.
