Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

This One is Hard to Swallow

Today the Senate Democrats voted to allow the only candidate elected on the Connecticut for Leiberman ticket, to continue to caucus with the Democrats and keep the Chairmanships of  Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committees, in spite of his unparalleled support for the republican candidate for President in 2008.

Salon reports today that the Senate was in a very forgiving mood, as both Leiberman and Stevens were given love taps by their respective collegues.

Lame-duck lawmakers hadn’t been back in town 24 hours Tuesday morning before they let Joe Lieberman off with a slap on the wrist, in a Democratic meeting closed to the public.

Lieberman…was McCain’s constant companion on the campaign trail all year; he spoke at the GOP convention, belittled Obama, endorsed various Republicans and generally behaved like, well, a guy who was asking to be tossed out of his party.

Rachel Maddow has articulated her astonishment of the run-up to this event.

At one point this past week, Rachel asked what a Democrat has to do to get punished by their own party. My guess? Be Hillary Clinton.

  1. when he isn’t even a member of that party. The Dems want and need Lieberman to caucus with them. That’s all there is too it. However, there is another factor at play here. This supports Obama’s message of coming together as a nation. I have no love for Lieberman, but I can’t knock the Dems for this move.

Tactically, this is a win, win.

Dems get their majority, Obama gets his unity, Lie-berman keeps his gavel, and most importantly, Lieberman should be putty in our hands.

But thats just my take on it. This is politics, your enemy is only your enemy until you need them on your side. [another reason why I hate politics]

Its not that hard of a pill to swallow. we’ve had worse.
