On This Day

In 1674, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Father Jacques Marquette founded a mission to convert the Illiniwek. This settlement later grew into the city of Chicago.

In 1791, the world’s first Sunday newspaper, The Observer, was first published.

In 1829, a British governor of India, Lord William Bentinck, declared that anyone abetting suttee (the custom of cremating the living widow along with her deceased husband) was guilty of culpable homicide.

In 1872, the  American ship Mary Celeste was found in the Atlantic, under full sail, headed in the direction of the Strait of Gibraltar, by the British brig Dei Gratia with nobody aboard. The cargo was untouched and all of the crew’s personal belongings were still on board. The crew was never seen or heard from again. And nowhere near the Bermuda Triangle!

In 1881, the first edition of the Los Angeles Times came out. We may actually get to see the last issue, considering how poorly print papers are doing these days.

In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson became the first US president to travel to Europe while in office when he attended the World War I peace talks in Versailles.

In 1943,  President Franklin D. Roosevelt shut down the Works Progress Administration because the war had created enough employment. Time to start it up again!

In 1969, Black Panther Party members Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were murdered in their sleep during a raid by Chicago police.

In 1971, the Montreux Casino in Switzerland was accidentally set on fire by some idiot with a flare gun during a Frank Zappa show. This event was later immortalized in the Deep Purple song “Smoke on the Water”.

    I know I do!

Never even tried to write to Santa. I don’t think I believed in him enough. The logistics of delivering presents to every kid in the world in one night with just one sleigh full of toys (always brand name, never “Santa’s Workshop” bothered me.

I wrote a fan letter to a favorite DJ once. No response.

I have six dice I used to use for various dice games that I have long since forgotten how to play.

My parents were very similar in their outlooks on life, their tastes, their opinions. He was a slob and she was neat, he was a pack rat and she never kept anything around longer than needed, etc. etc., so in other ways they were opposites. I’m not presently attached, but I’ve always gone for similar rather than opposite.

Did you ever write letters to Santa? Did he write back?

Totally. I’m the youngest by 8 years, so my brothers participated in keeping me believing until later than most. Even given that it was a more innocent time (weird to think of the 70s as “innocent” but…) I think I believed through Christmas of 1st grade. And we still got presents from “Santa” into adulthood. Because he really exists.

Have you ever written a fan letter? If so, who to? Did you get a response?

Yes. Best one – to Kathleen Goonan, a great science fiction writer. I wrote to tell her how I picked up The Bones of Time because it is set in Hawaii, and (at that time) my fitness goal was to do the Hawaii AIDS Ride & I was reading things set there for inspitation. She wrote back! Turned me on to a piece she has on her site about the green sand beach — yes, there really is one — in Hawaii. She is really cool.

Quick – how many dice do you have in your house? What games?

    I don’t think I have any.

I think I wrote to Santa at least once, but I don’t recall getting a reply.

    Never wrote a fan letter.

I imagine there must be a dozen or so.  Lulu just bought Yahtzee, so there’s, what, five in there?

Never thought of my parents in that light.  Hmmmm.  Well, my dad was shy and retiring and a bit socially awkward, and my mom was a talker.  Other people will have to judge me and Lulu, but I think we’re alike in many ways.

    I did not know that!

Did you ever write letters to Santa? Did he write back?  Pretty sure I did, at least once.  Don’t recall him writing back tho.

Have you ever written a fan letter? If so, who to? Did you get a response?  No fan letters, but updated for the internet age, I have posted comments on the blogs of authors I like, and have received direct replies in the comments from them.

Quick – how many dice do you have in your house? What games?

Hundreds.  Mostly used for D&D/Roleplaying games.  Some used for Munchkin, and other assorted games.  About 5 years or so ago we bought a stocking that was sold by weight & stuffed with random dice, so we have at least 5lbs worth.  Yeah, we’re geeks.  😉

Were your parents a lot alike, or were they opposites who were attracted? How about you and your partner/SO/spouse?

Parents are both similar and opposite.  Similar in worldview and heart; but dad is a packrat and mom is not; dad can spend hours talking to strangers, mom’s a bit more introverted than that; mom’s always on time, dad’s usually late.  Same sort of deal with me & my husband.  Primarily share world views, but somewhat different humor; he likes dark chocolate, I like white; he has no concept of time, I hate being late; I like dogs, he’s allergic (we settled by having cats instead); he likes sci-fi, I like fantasy.  But we agree on more than we disagree on.
