On This Day
In 1593, France’s King Henri IV, knowing which side his bread was buttered on, converted from Protestantism to Catholicism, cheerfully declaring (it is said), “Paris is well worth a Mass!”
In 1755, the British governor of Novia Scotia began the deportation of the Acadians (descendants of the original French settlers). An estimated 11,500 were deported overall, with at least a third dying in the process. They ended up scattered all over the Americas, with a large population setting in Louisiana, where they are known today as Cajuns.
In 1868, Wyoming became a U.S. Territory. Now Liz Cheney is getting all territorial over it, in spite of being a resident of Virginia.
In 1933, France began a new quota restricting the importation of American movies.
In 1947, The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer, starring Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, and Shirley Temple, premiered at Radio City Music Hall.
In 1956, Italian ocean liner SS Andrea Doria sank after colliding with the MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket (due to heavy fog).
In 1965, Bob Dylan enraged many of his fans (and made new ones) when he “went electric” at the Newport Folk Festival. (“Too commercial!” cried the early hipsters.)
In 2000, Dick Cheney selected himself to be George W. Bush’s running mate.
