In 1539, explored Hernando de Soto landed in Florida and claimed it for Spain without asking those who already resided there.
In 1781, the now-forgotten Jack Jouett (the Paul Revere of the South) discovered the British army was heading to Virginia to capture Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and several other important figures. He took off on horseback, taking back roads and trails, and arrived in time to warn Jefferson.
In 1965, Gemini IV astronaut became the first American to walk in space.
In 1968, Valerie Solanas shot artist Andy Warhol three times in an assassination attempt.
In 1979, the Ixtoc I oil well in the Gulf of Mexico suffered a blowout, causing around 3 million barrels of oil to spill into the Gulf.
