The Daily F Bomb, Saturday 2/9/13

Happy Saturday, or Caturday, or Fatterday (I eat a huge breakfast on the weekends, so that applies…)

Today’s Interrogation: Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today? How many languages do you speak? What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed? What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed? What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?

  1. Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today?

Sure, lots of nastiness in high school

How many languages do you speak?

I only speak English well at all. I know a few words of Spanish and used to be pretty good at Hebrew when I lived in Israel

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

    The Godfather. The Princess Bride.

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

The movie is almost always worse than the book it was based on. I can’t think of which was the worst.

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?

Well, there was a ginger cheesecake. Ginger! In cheesecake! WTF?

  2. Jk2003

Regret:  ummmm.  I was single until I was 29.  Hell yes I have some regrets.  But I had a ball doing it.   And there were no permanent scars.

Languages:  1 sadly.  There is another regret.  I lived in Germany as a kid, took Spanish and Italian.  I can understand enough Spanish to get by but speaking it is very different.

Bad movie/good book:  Gettysburg the movie from The Killer Angels.  That book is such a good read, the movie was bound to disappoint.

Good movie/good book:  Forrest Gump. The book was different but the movie was awesome.

Messing with my favorite dish:  anyone that puts Dijon mustard on anything.

    Toothache day?  Why?  Who?

  3. (what the heck is a lox?)

    Excellent tweets today.

Is Bachmann really considering a run against Al Franken? Please please, do it Michele!! That may be the only way to get her out of that House seat.

I love the tag  #freshfacestaleideas! Was that just for Rubio or are they putting old Bobby Jindal tweets there also?

You can have Clippy ask that question directly, you know:

    Back to hover later …

Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today? Oh, yes, and I will leave it at that.

How many languages do you speak? I can speak French and a little bit of Hawaiian (Olelo Hawai’i). I can also read German and Latin. Needless to say, you don’t get to speak Latin very often. I took reading German in college. When I was doing archaeological work in Germany about 20 years ago, I could manage basic shop German, but I have lost most of it now.

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed? The Wizard of Oz. I loved the movie and the book as a kid, and I still love them.

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed? I thought that the movie version of the first Stephanie Plum novel was awful.

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant? We had pizza with mayo in Ukraine. I thought it was a bit odd.

I am astonished at the amount of effort you put into these daily. I am also astonished that there is a “Toothache Day”. We celebrate this? Is it an offshoot of National Masochist Day?

Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today? To often to count. None of them huge, just entirely too numerous.

How many languages do you speak? One, to my shame.

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed? What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed? Don’t read novels, don’t watch movies. I have zero imagination, and almost no ability to suspend reality and get into fictional worlds, to my lasting regret.

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant? Tomatoes. Ick. There is no dish a raw tomato won’t ruin if chopped fine enough that I can’t pick it out.

And wish for a time machine to find where the gone delicatessens were.

Course, with a time machine, I could go back first to get money and then farther back for a better price, or even to Sunday mornings when both my grandfathers were alive and

But then- would I want to come back? There’s alotta stuff i’d like to ask them both. Then later i’d have to corroborate stuff with my grandmothers and some aunts. Could be gone for months.

That Kathryn Grayson acted like she was an opera singer opposite mario lanza in some movies. There’s some stories. Real life very fancy small private new york dinner party, intimate, lanza says her breasts would fit into champagne glasses. Impatient with the reactions to his assertion, and a little/bit/alot/completely/somewhat/you decide crazy. He attacks her evening gown and proves the anatomical anomaly to the horror/satisfaction of the other guests. Grayson was a good sport. For once, i’d say you could try this at home; though not necessarily with company.

I’ll start tippin again if when the boxes return. I forget the rest of the Qs.

  7. Hey! I wrote an article about bagels. But I prefer sable to lox. I also just had a taste of Buffalo smoked salmon (a friend brought it to a Super Bowl party). Sounds weird, but it was excellent. I also like pickled lox, but it doesn’t really go on a bagel.

Umm, not really.  I don’t think I misbehaved enough.  I did a few embarrassing things, but I’m still embarrassed enough that I don’t think I’ll say what they were.  ๐Ÿ˜‰

English + what I remember of high school French.

Hmm, I’m a bit fuzzy this early in the morning (Yeah, I know it’s 9) to remember what novel/film combos I’ve seen.  I remember at the time being disappointed in the film version of Catch-22 because some characters were combined and/or did things other characters did in the book.  But I think it wasn’t a bad film.  I just loved the book so much I wanted the film to be exactly right.

I took Lulu to what was once a really great Mexican restaurant (because there aren’t many of those here), and found that the place was apparently under new management and was really terrible.  I think we both got chiles rellenos, and I swear that they had some kind of Italian-tasting tomato sauce on them.

Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today?  Yes. Will not tattle on myself to tell which behavior.

How many languages do you speak? 2 and 3 others very badly (though I read them).

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed? Witness for the Prosecution

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed? Dune

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?  strange toppings on pizza.  I am a pizza purist.  Couldn’t think of anything else since I rarely go to restaurants – I prefer my home cooking (and it is cheaper)

Bachmann considers run against Al Franken; Matchup would pit famous comedian against nationally respected politician who used to be on #SNL

If Bachmann wants to be a Senator, she’ll have to work her way up, starting at Second City.

    1865 – Mrs. Patrick Campbell, British actress (d. 1940)

    Har!  Great hover!

    1909 – Heather Angel, British actress (d. 1986)

    Toothache Day

???  Why would anybody give a toothache its own day???

  11. slksfca

I regret too many things to list, but I’ve had plenty of time to come to terms with regret.

I speak two languages fluently, and there are three or four others which I can speak or read haltingly.

Yesterday I had a slice of quiche with an unusual ingredient that I didn’t expect to like but did: chunks of butternut squash. The squash was very sweet and tender and went well with the normal quiche ingredients.

  12. slksfca

At the moment all I can think of is The Duchess. It’s not based on a novel, but on an excellent and rather feminist-flavored biography of Georgiana Spencer Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, by Amanda Foreman.

The film was pretty true to the real story, with some (fairly) minor changes in service of dramatic structure and pacing. And Ralph Fiennes is a splendid actor. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Floja Roja

Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today?

Oh yes, I was often bitchy to people who did not deserve it. I especially was bad at responding to compliments.

How many languages do you speak?

One, unless Pig Latin counts. My mother said I was a barbarian for speaking just one, and she was probably right.

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

LoTR. They changed a lot, but they got so much right, especially the look. And Viggo. ๐Ÿ˜‰

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

Empire of the Sun. It probably would have been fine had I not read and loved the novel, but it was so gooey and sentimental, which was completely lacking in the book.

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?

Mentioned above – truffle oil in Mac and Cheese. And one Indian place that put cilantro in every dish.

  14. Best movie adaptation has to be The Lord of the Rings. I know Peter Jackson made a lot of changes but it is such a complex book he had to do something or it would have been unfilmable. Besides it had Viggo Mortensen in it. How could it possibly not be brilliant with Viggo.

  15. Hedwig

    He’s the hispanic Rand/Ron Paul…

Ok, except for immigration…even he’s not stupid enough to miss the writing on the demographic wall…

  16. dear occupant

behaviors that i regret..heh, you’re kiddin’ me right?

best movie adaption…toss up between Lord of the Rings and To Kill a Mockingbird.

worst move adaption….hands down, Bonfire of the Vanities.

languages…enough Spanglish, Frenchlish and I Italianish to order a good meal.

odd food ingrediant…it would never reach my pizza but no doubt Pineapple!

POLL: 67% of Republicans think video games are a bigger threat than guns. The other 33% were playing Call Of Duty.

    – Top Conservative Cat (@TeaPartyCat) February 8, 2013

reminds me of something I read in my psychology textbook:

93% of respondents admit they masturbate, 7% lied.

As to movie adaptions of a book, I don’t think any of them lived up, but the Harry Potter movies were pretty good.

    Two languages: English & ASL.

Can’t think of a restaurant dish, but I once bought a jar of salsa at Costco and when I tried it at home, it was sweet! I’m talking about the regular tomato/onions/peppers kind. I looked at the jar for ingredients and prominently displayed on the front was “agave syrup added”. I should have looked closely, but WTF? It’s like adding table sugar to your tossed salad.

  18. Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today?

    – Even by Moose standards, this isn’t something that can be answered in comment length.

How many languages do you speak?

    – 1.3

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

    – LOTR

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed?

    – Christine

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?

    – ReadiWhip angrily “SCHKKKRRRTTTTT!”ed on top of a scratched water glass of bad coffee and whiskey in the San Diego Marriot, under the guise of being an Irish Coffee.

  19. LeftOverFlowerChild

Hope everyone in the path of the storms is safe and warm.

    Q&A Time….

Did you ever engage in any kind of behavior that you regret today? Plenty.

How many languages do you speak? One, two if you stretch the question to include American sign language..So..English and ASL…Eh, and enough Spanish to carry on a broken conversation–on a good day.

What is your favorite movie adaptation of a novel you have read and enjoyed? Persuasion, the 2007 version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones

What is your least favorite movie version of a novel you have read and enjoyed? Little Women, totally trashed that book.

What is the worst thing you have encountered being added to what should be a favorite dish of yours in a restaurant?

Two, chili is an all time favorite, ordered it a little place in Hamilton Texas–Who puts corn and elbow pasta in chili??? No one in Texas, it’s a illegal and definitely immoral!!! I’m sure of it!! And sugar added to green beans…I LOVE green beans…BBQ joint, super sweet bbq (I’m not a fan of sweet bbq) and sugar in the green beans. I guess the bbq should have been the tip off.

On the book/movie question…REALLY hoping Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series is treated well by Starz. I’d be heartbroken for them to mess it up by changing the story.
