On This Day

In 1790, the first State of the Union address was given by George Washington in New York City. The first SOTU drinking game consisted solely of chugging whenever he clicked his wooden teeth(yes, I know that’s a fictional story).

In 1867, African American men were granted the right to vote in Washington, D.C. over President Andrew Johnson’s veto.

In 1835, the United States national debt was at zero for the first and only time.

In 1964, LBJ declared a “War on Poverty,” which has somehow morphed into the “War on Poor People.”

In 1975, Ella T. Grasso became the first female U.S. governor who didn’t succeed her husband, but was elected in her own right.

In 2002, the so-called No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law by George W. Bush, planting a foot squarely in the Left’s behind.

In 2011, in a suburb of Tucson, Arizona, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was wounded when a disturbed young man wielding a semi-automatic pistol loaded with a high capacity magazine shot up a crowd at an appearance by Giffords at a local grocery store. 6 were killed and 13 (including Giffords) were wounded.

Were you ever teacher’s pet? class clown? dunce? I was never the teacher’s pet, but I was always the “smart kid”.

Have you ever shown slides or home movies to your guests? Not to anyone who is not related to us. At Thanksgiving we looked at all our family pictures from Italy last summer.

How many pairs of shoes (include all footware) in your closet? About 12. I can’t fins shoes in my size.

Did you ever catch your parents, teachers, or bosses in a lie? My boss is fine, but I am not the biggest fan of the university administration. I will leave it at that.

I did have a few teachers that liked me and worked hard with me, but I was never a pet. I did engage in a lot of class-clownishness at college level, just in the smaller classes. Any dunce activity would have been reported to the authorities right away.

Showing slides or home movies was always stereotyped as the ultimate way to bore your guests when I was a child, so no, I never thought to do such a thing. These days you just YouTube everything. My Dad went through a slide phase, but he never did slide shows.

No shoes in my closet, they are all under my bed. Well, that’s a lie, the pointy toed spike heeled zipper back boots are in one closet, and the vintage plastic shoes and springolators are in another. I think that’s 4. Then there may be some old ones I haven’t worn in decades buried in some dark corner. Under the bed I have boots. Two short pair, two medium high, and one high pair. And one pair of good athletic shoes, and some little cute mary janes I wear around the house. There are also a couple of pairs of sandals that I probably will never wear again.

I caught one particular boss in a few doozies (with some help from co-workers). He’d apparently lied about all of his credentials. We checked. He lied even about his military service. He said he was in the Tet Offensive, but he was in jail in Upstate New York for fraud at that time. We successfully deposed that particular Boss from Hell. It was a beautiful thing. My teachers all lied, but it was the lies they were taught, too. Really just over-simplification, and tales that were told so often they were believed as fact (like Betsy Ross). My dad used to lie about his drinking. All alcoholics do that.

This weather is tearin’ up me skin!

I was teacher’s pet material (goody goody), but I don’t think I ever actually held the title.

Used to show slides a lot.

    About a half dozen.

Well, my mom never was ready to tell me about sex, and I was very inquisitive, so she made stuff up.  I guess my dad wasn’t ready either, but I never asked him about anything and he kept his mouth shut.  I think I can recall once or twice when a teacher unwittingly gave incorrect information, but I can’t recall details.

I see that there are a couple of people enjoying the scenery.  I wonder if they brought a dog?  I wonder if it’s a Peke?

nona d above.  as per Christmas Story, I was neither a bully nor a toady, but one of the nameless rabble of victims.  I was smart but sarcastic.  My dad always asked “you know why they don’t send donkeys to college, son?” answer– cuz nobody likes a smartass.

Have you ever shown slides or home movies to your guests?

on xmas eve this year, i downloaded a bunch of pictures (from scenics of world cities to xmas card art to xmas LOLs) and ran a slide show on my TV during a xmas party.

How many pairs of shoes (include all footware) in your closet?

I have six pairs.  my wife has a considerably larger collection.

Did you ever catch your parents, teachers, or bosses in a lie?

I have had lying liar bosses, but I can’t recall my parents or teachers lying about anything but Santa, Easter Bunny, or tooth fairy.
