On This Day

In 1806, Lieutenant Zebulon Pike spotted a distant mountain peak while exploring the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Someone later named it after him. It is now populated by cranky nurses (or so I’m told).

In 1859, the first modern revival of the Olympic Games was held in Athens, Greece.

In 1864, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman burned the city of Atlanta, and began his March to the Sea.

In 1920, the first assembly of the League of Nations took place in Geneva.

In 1943, Heinrich Himmler decided that Gypsies were no better than how he considered Jews, and ordered them all into concentration camps.

In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ceremonially laid the cornerstone of the new Jefferson Memorial.

In 1969, a massive crowd, estimated (depending on the source) to be from 250,000 to 500,000 people held an anti-war demonstration called “The March Against Death” in Washington D.C.

I have never been to the Olympics. When they came to L.A., I had just moved back to S.F. for a bit. Even though I never attend sporting events, I would not mind seeing the Olympics. Preferably in a location that I want to visit anyway (NOT Russia, I’m not speaking to Pootie-Poot).

I walk up hills, and even some trails, but actual climbing? Requiring equipment? Ha. Nevah!

Caving sounds a bit too extreme for me. I have never even been to Carlsbad. I’ve read plenty about places like Leguchilla, and they are fascinating, but that sort of activity is not for me. I like my comforts. I like high ceilings. I like light. I don’t even like underground parking structures.

I haven’t been to any libraries while traveling, so my best library is the Central Library here in Downtown L.A.. Built in the 20s by architect Bertram Goodhue, it’s just a really gorgeous building, and has enough books to keep me very happy indeed. Some asswipe set it on fire in ’86, and 400k books were destroyed (bibliocide?). But they rebuilt and repaired, and added on (did a fine job, too). It’s fabulous.

    No Olympic games.

No climbing, but plenty of hiking.

No spelunking.  I don’t even like thinking about it!

I would say Library of Congress, but I never spent enough time there to really enjoy it.
