Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind. At least it’s Wednesday morning where I am as I post this. Hopefully you’re asleep and it’s real Wednesday morning by the time you read it.

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

Black history is American history

“”The story of the African-American people is the story of the settlement and growth of America itself, a universal tale that all people should experience,” said Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. whose new series, “The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross” will premier on PBS October 22.

The series is accompanied by a book with the same name, which Kam Williams reviewed for The Afro:

By and large, history books have marginalized the African-American community by either omitting or minimizing its cornucopia of contributions to the country. Similarly, the African-American psyche has been trivialized by a host of harmful stereotypes which suggest that we aren’t as diverse or as capable of experiencing the same full range of emotions as Caucasians.

How else can you explain that the mayor of New York City might rationalize employing the “stop and frisk” police tactic against blacks in wholesale fashion, as if criminality is a racial trait instead of judging people by the content of their character as envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King a half-century ago? Fortunately,”The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross” has just been published in the face of such persisting, institutionalized prejudice.

Deal Watch Tuesday: Shutdown plus 15, Debtpocalypse minus 2

Reports are that a deal has been struck between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling.

The rough parameters appear to be as follows:

– Government reopened with a continuing resolution that runs through January 15th when the next round of sequester cuts is scheduled to take effect.

– Clean debt ceiling increase through February 15th.

– Budget conference will meet with a deadline of mid-December to come up with a budget.

There are rumors that some concessions related to the Affordable Care Act are in the mix and possibly limitations on extraordinary measures that Treasury can take the next time we approach the debt ceiling.

This morning Senate Republicans will meet at 9am Eastern to consider the deal.

Senate leadership is looking for unanimous consent to get the bill to the House quickly because the government can no longer borrow money to pay its obligations as of Thursday. Emperor Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has not yet decided if he will allow the Senate to vote.

House leadership has been silent. Some individual House members have said that they think there aren’t 20 Republican votes for such a deal and there is still the Cantor Rule to overcome.

Dare we hope?

The Socially Conservative State of…California?

By: inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

California is generally thought of as a very liberal place. The Democratic Party is certainly doing well; Republicans are at an all-time low almost everywhere in the state.

This applies to social positions as well. The stereotype is that Californians are very socially liberal. California is, after all, home to San Francisco and Berkeley – the natural environment of the godless hippie and homosexual. Hollywood is also located in California, and Hollywood’s not exactly a bastion of social conservatism.

It may surprise some, then, to note that in the past four years Californians have voted against gay marriage, marijuana, and the abolition of the death penalty.

More below.

remember the sequester? another AIDS Walk Austin diary

I was logging out of the AIDS Walk Austin site, after thanking the donors from Friday’s amazing donations, when I saw this statement from AIDS Services of Austin:

This year’s sequestration means ASA is losing $78,000. And we need YOU to help us meet our goals in order to maintain the high standard of care we offer in Central Texas.

Wow. Lost in all the talk about the shutdown & the potential default has been the disaster that is the sequester. Come below the fold for more on why you should donate to this cause.
