On This Day

In 1775, General George Washington took command of the Continental Army.

In 1844, the last two known Great Auks (flightless birds) were killed. By collectors! Ugh. Hopefully some still exist somewhere, far away from predatory humans.

In 1863, in a victory for Northern forces, the Battle of Gettysburg came to an end after 3 days of fighting.

In 1890, Idaho became the 43rd State.

In 1988, the USS Vincennes shot down passenger airliner Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 aboard. They later claimed they thought it was a warplane. The U.S. settled with the families of the victims, but never apologized.

In 2005, Spain legalized same sex marriage.

In 2009, in a meandering and not-completely-coherent speech, Alaskan governor and right wing darling Sarah Palin announced she was resigning the governorship.

  1. The temptation to just answer “dead” is strong but I will resist the urge because it might damage my soul.

I will settle on the more ambiguous “Those already dead. They do less harm that way.”

  2. Who is your favorite Republican (living or dead)? Abraham Lincoln

If Sarah Palin starts her own political party, what should she call it? The Dumb As A Box Of Rocks Party

Have you ever been emancipated in any way? When I got out of an abusive marriage. I emancipated myself.

What are the best beans? What is the best way to eat them? small white northern beans made into Baked Beans. I make mine in a crockpot. Recipe link below.

  3. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

So, on this date in (respectively) 1965, 1969 and 1971, Trigger, Brian Jones and Jim Morrison died, eh?  Coincidence?  I think NOT.

    On to the questions:

Who is your favorite Republican (living or dead)? Jacob Javits

If Sarah Palin starts her own political party, what should she call it? The Maverick Party

Have you ever been emancipated in any way? When I married my wife (:::saves this to show to the wife:::)

What are the best beans? What is the best way to eat them? I like black beans served over white rice – Moros y Christianos.  Yum.  Especially with some bacon crumbled on top.

  4. Who is your favorite Republican (living or dead)?

Easiest question ever: Abraham Lincoln.  Now, who is 2nd favorite? That’s much trickier!

If Sarah Palin starts her own political party, what should she call it?

Oh, so many choices!  The rapists’ rights party.  The corporations are people party. The I see Russia party. The quitters party.

Have you ever been emancipated in any way?

Well, I looked it up. There are various definitions, but one is

freeing someone from the control of another; especially a parent’s relinquishing authority and control over a minor child.

so, taking a wide view of this, I guess being fired is sort of emancipation!  But, taking a more typical view, no.

What are the best beans? What is the best way to eat them?

I like many kinds of beans: Kidney (white (aka cannellini) or red), chick peas (ceci), limas, favas, pinto etc.

Best way to eat them? In winter, any kind of soup or stew (including chili if your version of chili has beans). Or, if someone else makes it and cleans up, cassoulet.

In summer, mixed together with onions, garlic, hot sauce, olive oil, vinegar, maybe some good olives, perhaps some anchovies, and marinated a bit, then served cold.

But I don’t know what you know exactly, jazz-wise, so quietly offer suggestion to try also the great bop funk song, Little Johnny C; which refers to and co-features same dude.

    Teddy Roosevelt.

The Savage Shitheads (thank you, David Mamet).

From religious belief, I guess.  I do feel lighter without it.

Big-eyed beans from Venus.  No, red beans are the first ones that come to mind.  Like all Cajun ingredients, they should be prepared and eaten in New Orleans.

TENNIS FACT: Tennis players are so superstitious that they only ever refer to Andy Murray as ‘The Scottish Player.’

    – Tom

Omigod, that’s brilliant.  Must tell Lulu!

Wow.  Are there any recordings with him, I wonder?  I was unaware of this guy.

  9. Gee

1969 – Brian Jones, English musician, composer, and producer (The Rolling Stones) (b. 1942)

That’s a nice clip.  Always loved those Vox teardrop-shaped guitars.

    Republican:  Honest Abe

Palins party:  I’m not feeling clever this morning but let me just say that I desperately hope this happens.

Emancipated:  just from high school (which I found to be not a healthy place for me)

    Beans:  baked with sausage

    Happy fourth everyone!

Have you ever been emancipated in any way?

What are the best beans? What is the best way to eat them? black beans – I cook a big pot with spinach & rotel tomatoes, yum. Top with avocado.

Who is your favorite Republican (living or dead)?

    Ummm…

    /crickets chirping

Oh! Abraham Lincoln? I’m sure there are probably others that ought be contenders, but, I’ll be damned if I can name a one.

If Sarah Palin starts her own political party, what should she call it?

The Beards…oh, no, sorry, that would be the name for Michelle Bachmann’s Party…ummm…lessee…how about The Waybacks?

Since that is what they really want…to go Way Back in time to ‘better days’ (/snort). You know, the days when wimmins and colored knew their places and Christ was in the Constitution (wait, you mean Christ is not mentioned in the Constitution?)

Have you ever been emancipated in any way?

Not legally so…but, I left my home and my family when I was 15 and lived on the streets for several years.

Hmmm…saying it like that made me think of this from Simon and Garfunkel:

    When I left my home

    And my family,

I was no more than a boy

    In the company of strangers

In the quiet of the railway station,

    Running scared,

    Laying low,

    Seeking out the poorer quarters

    Where the ragged people go,

    Looking for the places

    Only they would know.

    -The Boxer by Paul Simon

What are the best beans? What is the best way to eat them?

I love all beans. My two favorite ways of eating them are:

Limas with butter and lots of pepper cooked down until mushy.

    or

White beans (great northern, cannellini, or even the ‘non-white’ pinto) with chili powder, garlic, and hot sauce cooked down until mushy.

I can eat an entire pot of either and will often have just beans and rice (or beans and greens) for dinner. /grin
