Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome. 🙂

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

THURSDAY NOTE:

The Moose will be featuring a liveblog for the SCOTUS Thursday rulings at about 8:45am Eastern time. There are still 14 merit cases from the October 2012 term that have not been decided including the Fisher affirmative action case, the DOMA and Prop 8 cases, and the ruling on gutting the Voting Rights Act. Stop by and read some tea leaves … or just bring your tea and read what the others are saying.

Looking forward to the LiveBlog – will pop in and out!

A nippy 49 here in Saugerties NY right now, sunny day expected low 70’s.

Perfect weather to get out in to get petitions signed for local Democrats in city and county elections.

Not amused…. prefer cooler temps, like 70’s instead of the 90’s we’ll be getting.

Physical therapy for my right shoulder starts in half an hour.  Will get to start to work from home next week.  Less driving!!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful day. Nice to see so many new diaries on the list this morning.

I will be in a meeting when the SCOTUS decisions are announced. Will be sooo distracted in that meeting!!

  4. We have friends coming for dinner. The turkey breast is thawed and ready to roast. The cookies are baked. I need to buy asparagus and salad fixings, and do a few more household things.

Also food pantry this morning. Bank and grocery afterwards.

Hope everyone has a great day and that we get good news today!

From what I understand, Nurse Kelley’s hand surgery went well yesterday. I’m following this one rather closely, because I may be headed for similar surgery. Keep fingers crossed for her. I suspect Khloe or Pittiepat will update us in a bit.

I saw my hand doctor yesterday. He verified the arthritis, and from what he said it is a bit worse than the PA that first saw me described. My left thumb is currently in a removable splint, and if that has any success, they’ll do the same thing to my right thumb. The doctor is talking about pinning bones together and removing one bone in each hand. He also said I’m way too young for this kind of arthritis. Oh, well – I’ve been accused of being old for my age before…

depressed today. Once again, I was semi-conscious for about the last hour of my “sleep”. Even on a night I was wiped out from exercise. This is really getting old. I already spring for the time-release ambien. And take 4 other sleepy-making things besides. I’m so tired of not getting enough sleep. I just couldn’t take what I think their ruling will be.

Eating beans & avocado for breakfast. It is, of course hot already.

So I think I’m going to the AIDS Services of Austin thing instead of the potluck. It’ll be easier — easier parking, inside & air conditioned… and I can leave early. And I haven’t been to the theater since they remodeled it.

I’m fairly certain I woke up in opposite-land:

    Anyway – happy Friday Eve!

I still don’t have a washer & dryer I’ll be sweating like mad in an unair conditioned laundromat.  My FB news feed had a number of postings from friends in Colorado Springs who are worried about the amount of haze and smoke blanketing the city.  While CO has 8 wildfires, none are near the Springs.  During my last 3 years in the Springs I lived in a lovely duplex which had no air conditioning and many, many homes there do not have a/c either.  Makes living in hot and smoky conditions much worse.  Again, the Springs is under fire threat again because heat, humidity and wind and may result in another Red Flag warning.  It is going to be an absolutely ghastly year for western and southwestern states.

We are up and going going going this  morning.  We need to eat, exercise, shower(me first then the kids) and get to the nursery (plant).  All before lunch.  Then at three I get my haircut.  I love getting my haircut.  Mostly for the wash.

Warming up today.  Near ninety through Monday.  Humid.  Maybe I’ll just have my head shaved.  That would be easier than trying to look cute in the humidity.

    Have a good day all!

It is getting to the point where the weathercasters don’t even tell you what the weather is they just tell you when it is safe to go outside again. I am hoping that will be sometime mid-October.

    Hope all are well.

we had a brief shower last night so the morning dawned awfully muggy. We’ll dry up soon enough although we aren’t predicted for triple digit temps yet. I am just duller ‘n dirt this morning, perhaps more coffee will help.

After a whole week of rainy days, not to mention the ones in the past couple months, we’re back to hot, sunny, and humid days. And boy was it very hot yesterday. That long winter we had is already a dim memory.

Bright sunshine this morning and warmer weather expected. No June Glooms today!

This afternoon I walk over to the hospital lab for my quarterly blood draw. It’s a good hike of about a mile or so through the park and I’m looking forward to that part, if not so much to the actual drawing of blood. 🙂

Happy Solstice/Solstice Eve to the Mooselanders.  I will need jan’s diary (and probably TW’s pootie diary, too) to get myself together for the QC tonight.  Not only will we have the 2nd reading of the cell tower siting approval (complete with NIMBY objections – via their lawyer who is either incompetent or milking them to pay for his school loans) but we’ll also have the CTNJs asking the County to request a “repeal” of the National Blueways designation given to the White River watershed last January because Agenda 21/Obama/gummint-landgrab.  I will have to muzzle myself tonight or I will say something regrettable (and in case of the lawyer possibly actionable).  Meanwhile – still working on the Annual Report and the Spring class schedule.  I’ll check back later for Nurse Kelley, SCOTUS, and other reports.  {{{HUGS}}} to all.

  14. Khloe

Considering her pain, she was in a pretty good mood today. I went and got the few pain pills  the doctor was kind enough to prescribe for her. If the doc knows it’s going to hurt like hell, why only give her a few!! Sigh…. don’t get me started on this.

    Kat update:

Last night I learned about smoke in the mountains. There is a fire that started yesterday called the East Peak Fire.It is quite a bit south of us. The wind direction changed yesterday evening, and blew the smoke in this direction. It was so thick, you could hardly see across this little street. If you dared to go outside, you could hardly take a breath. Each breath was followed by a cough. By this morning, the wind had changed back. Hopefully it stays that way.

Sorry I was so late today. I do my best to have chores and running done before playtime is allowed.

  15. Boehner could not get republicans to pass the Farm Bill in the House. Some are trying to blame the Democrats, who largely voted against it due to the proposed cuts to SNAP (food stamps) AND other food programs. But Boehner is astoundingly bad at his job and could NOT get it done.
