In 1896, Henry Ford took his first gas-powered vehicle, the Quadricycle, for a test drive around Detroit.

In 1912, Massachusetts instituted the first minimum wage law in the U.S.

In 1917, the Pulitzer Prizes were awarded for the first time.

In 1919, the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, was approved by Congress and sent to the states for ratification.

In 1943 (following two previous racially charged incidents) 200  U.S. Navy men took around 20 taxis and drove into East L.A., intending to kick some Latino ass. Their first victims were a group of 12-13 year old boys. They stripped anyone wearing a zoot suit and burned the suits. The violence in the wake of the attacks became known as the Zoot Suit Riots.

In 1989, the protests in Tiananmen Square ended in violence as Chinese troops moved in to quash them, killing hundreds (the exact number is unknown, but could be as high as 1000).

  1. Lots of questions today. I will get right to the answers.

    1. $1/hr putting up hay or walking beans to cut out weeds. Both great fun.

    2. Ice cream is best. Nuts are OK in certain flavors.

    3. No motto comes to mind.

    4. Neighbors in the apt below us many yrs ago. She came home from work at 11pm and put on Neil Diamond loud with the bass way to high.

    5. We’ve had lots of good neighbors. Hard to pick the best.

    6. I am a good neighbor.

    •••

I will try to hug the wandering black cat that howls at our back door if I can find him.

    Have a great day.

  2. What was the worst paying job you ever worked?

If I define that as one that I would quit, because it wasn’t worth the pay, it was the one that paid the most. I was an investment manager for a large bank, working with trust and agency accounts for “wealthy” people. Management in my business line changed, as did the philosophy of working FOR the client. Instead the focus changed to filling out forms and selling product. Add to that the 30% pay, and I was outta there.

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible?

Ice cream is better, but I’ll eat either. Nuts are fine, too.

    What is your motto?

    HA depends on the moment.

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had?

I was afraid of the downstairs neighbor when we lived in an apartment in St. Charles. She had mental health issues and was loud and aggressive. But fortunately I didn’t encounter her much.

Who was the best neighbor you ever had?

We’ve had lots of good neighbors. Hard to pick the best. But we have great neighbors now.

How do you rank as a neighbor?

I am a good neighbor, but not as good as Jim is.

  3. Gee

60 degrees, on its way up to about 80.  Low humidity, nice breeze.

Hmm, I had a lot of minimum wage, entry level jobs when I was in college.  Then I quit school for a while and took up cab driving.  No hourly wage, just 40% of the take, plus tips.  And people don’t tip cab drivers particularly well, in my experience.

Ice cream, although froja yoja is fine.  One of my favorite flavors is butter pecan.

“I’m lucky.”  Sometimes it’s, “People.  I hate ’em.”

Worst neighbor(s) were a couple who lived in an adjoining townhouse.  They were actually not horrible, but we did have a row about their parking habits one snowy day.

Best ever?  Not sure.  We have a few very helpful neighbors at the moment.

    C+ maybe?

  4. Gee

So did Darrell Issa kill anyone when he was an arsonist? I’m not saying he WAS an arsonist, but these questions should be asked.

    Hahahahahahahahahaha!

worst pay/hour was early babysittting at 75 cents/hour.  worst job was being asked to commit fraud against the federal government.  hella headaches from that one.

    either.  yes.

    keep going, keep going.

our condo in san jose backed up to a light commercial parking lot, and one night somebody blew up a drug van 20 feet? from our bedroom window, while i was having a terrible puke all night headache.  oh the sirens.  the lights.  the noise.

i have had a lot of good neighbors.  esp right here, after 15 years.  jackie and barb came over from across the street a couple weeks after my mom died when caleb and i both puked all night.  and mfsob was like camping or something.  they got sick two days later.

i am a good neighbor. i lend milk and stuff.  but my one neighbor is pissing me off, he’s more worried about his property values than me and my kids.  for when mfsob moves back in.

  6. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

What was the worst paying job you ever worked?  Bagger in a supermarket.  Paid the minimum wage (1.60 per hour then).  left after 3 days after I got a clerical job paying 2.00 per hour.

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible? Like both, prefer ice cream.  nuts are permissable if there is no chocolate.

What is your motto? “No left turn unstoned”  (OK, I stole that from Ken Kesey)

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had? The beyotch aspiring screenwriter in LA who called child services not once but at least twice to complain about our twin infants, who were teething.  It was humilating and scary to think that such an idiot could have possibly had our children taken away from us.

Who was the best neighbor you ever had? There was the divorcee down the hall when I was a teenager…

How do you rank as a neighbor?  After my workouts, I am pretty rank.

  7. What was the worst paying job you ever worked? sales clerk at a liquor store

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible? either one with a slight nod towards ice cream and yes on nuts

What is your motto? Don’t take life too seriously you’re not getting out of it alive.

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had? My current upstairs neighbors who sound like a herd of elephants. Have screaming fights at 3 AM. Think one in the morning is a great time to hang art in the bedroom. Who think they can play guitar and for someone who is a musician it is SO painful. etc.

Who was the best neighbor you ever had? One years ago who would babysit my cat for me.

How do you rank as a neighbor? Very considerate. No one has ever complained. However I’m thinking of sending Fido to talk to the people upstairs.

What was the worst paying job you ever worked?

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible?

    What is your motto?

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had?

Who was the best neighbor you ever had?

How do you rank as a neighbor?

Bad job:  babysitting.  When I was doing it we didn’t get paid much.

Ice cream or yogurt:  ice cream, nuts are allowed

    Motto:  don’t believe the hype

Bad neighbor:  oh, I’ll feel guilty for saying this but our previous neighbors wouldn’t leave us alone.  We couldn’t get any time alone in our yard and could hardly make it to the garage without having to stop and talk.  Their kids were the same way.  They just showed up all the time.

Best neighbor:  same house, other side…they were an older couple.  They had a swimming pool and allowed us to use it whenever we liked.  They were good company too.  Gave us space but very neighborly.  We are still in touch.  Send pics of the kids and planning a swimming date when it warms up.

Am I a good neighbor:  I try to be.  I think so.  Our new neighbors here are so pleased we are fixing up the house and yard.

  9. Floja Roja

What was the worst paying job you ever worked?

Baby-sitting. It should have included hazard pay.

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible?

Either will do, but frozen nuts don’t have much flavor and prefer melty or chewy to crunchy, so no nuts.

    What is your motto?

No idea, probably something involving wine.

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had?

Seymour, downstairs in Hollywood. A pervert who used to steal our undies from the laundry and hire hookers all the time, but ran for mayor regularly on a platform of cleaning up Hollywood.

Who was the best neighbor you ever had?

I’ve had so many good ones. The current ones will pet sit for me, are liberal, and can fix things that break around here.

How do you rank as a neighbor?

I’m a very good neighbor. I pet sit, I bring baked goods, and I usually have wine.

  10. anotherdemocrat

What was the worst paying job you ever worked?

in the 90s, I worked – full time – at a public library. Hard work, intellectually challenging 1 of my duties was putting my branch’s statistics into several Excel spreadsheets & troupleshooting said sheets when they glitched up). I rook home $900/month. Rent was $450. I spent most of that time loving my job but being really angry about economics in general & my finances in particular.

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible?

    Yes and yes.

    What is your motto?

We have done the impossible and that makes us mighty.

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had?

Hard to decide between the very heavy smokers who lived downstairs (so heavy the my apartment smelled of it), and the people in yhe house next door who would have campfire singalongs at 11pm on weeknights (the couldn’t seem to grasp the concept that singing 20 feet away from someone’s window might disturb their sleep)

Who was the best neighbor you ever had?

In my old apartment comples — the $450 a month place from my 1st answer — a bunch of us lived around the courtyard on the 2nd floor. We would all keep track of each other & have potlucks… that was great.

How do you rank as a neighbor?

Well, I’m quiet, I ignore when my neighbors break the complex’s rules about pets….. I think I’m an ok neighbor.

  11. mikidee

are babysitting – thought it was just me!

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible? Yes, yes, yes.

What is your motto? “Lower Your Expectations.”

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had? The young couple who lived above me in the duplex I lived in before I bought my little house in ’06. First day there her mother called the cops after the two of them beat the shit out of each other and their pittie. Loud music all day/night, refused to share yard work, broken doors/windows. I lasted 3 months.

    Who was the best neighbor you ever had? The ones I have now {{{{{{Debbie & LaVoyce}}}}}

How do you rank as a neighbor? Pretty darned good, if I do say so myself. I take care of my property, do meet & greets but don’t impose or pry, will shovel their walk if I’m on a roll, and share tomatoes in the summer – what’s not to like?

  12. slksfca

At various moments I’ve lent my cellphone and my toilet plunger to current neighbors in need, even though I don’t care for them.

My best neighbor was L, who lived on the ground floor here until the landlord paid him $20,000 to move out so the landlord’s family members could move in. L moved four blocks away and we’re still friends.

Worst neighbor has to be the guy next door in my old building, a junkie who murdered his girlfriend by shooting her dead in the apartment. At the request of SFPD detectives, I testified at the trial. Then along with another neighbor who testified, I moved out of that building.

Good morning Effers and fruit flies!

  13. Pam from Calif

What was the worst paying job you ever worked? Sales clerk for a department store

Ice cream or frozen yogurt? Are nuts permissible? Ice cream no nuts

What is your motto? No drama

Who was the worst neighbor you ever had? I’ve been lucky all my neighbors have been good

Who was the best neighbor you ever had?  All of them have been good

How do you rank as a neighbor? I guess good; never had any issues or problems
