Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Saturday 3/16/13

Happy Saturday, Bombazinos. Where I live the days are hitting highs in the low 80s, and the Jasmine is starting to bloom. Alas, foggy morning bring smoggy afternoons, so there is a trade-off.

Interrogatories

When is it permissible to lie? What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy? What is the first thing you notice about people? If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give? How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

  1. When is it permissible to lie?

When a) It doesn’t really matter and b) It doesn’t hurt anyone (both must be the case for it to be OK)

e.g “How are you?” “Fine” well, even if you aren’t fine, this is fine, depending on who’s asking.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy?

I like playing competitive games (bridge, Scrabble), my wife doesn’t get this but I don’t think she thinks it’s crazy.

What is the first thing you notice about people?

In meat-space, their physical appearance. Probably first thing is hair color, unless the person has some unusual characteristic. One thing I like about the internet (also see IRITI’s post from yesterday) is that physical characteristics are invisible. So I notice whether the person makes sense.

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give?

It gets better. Either that or maybe “don’t jump”.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

Huh? I’d still be the same age, I just wouldn’t know it. I don’t understand.

  2. Bonus for me.

When is it permissible to lie?

Almost never. Ends don’t justify means.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy?

I have some “conservative” relatives so they probably think my librul views are crazy.

What is the first thing you notice about people?

Usually their teeth, in terms of physical characteristics. In terms of character, it’s how they treat other people.

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give?

    Don’t be afraid.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

    Late 30s, probably.

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give? Stay out of the sun.

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? I still feel like 25 although I am 61.

When I can lie:  I don’t lie often.  Am blunt to a fault sometimes.  I have lied to protect the kids from knowing too much about the harsh world.  Other than that it is just easier to tell the truth.

I am into never using paper towels.  My mom cannot handle it.  I have drawers of rags, cloth diapers that I use to clan, they get washed with the laundry.  Easy peasy and cheap.  My mom and I are both clean freaks but she just can’t imagine living without paper towels.  I have tried to convert her but she is one stubborn lady.  Also…I don’t use my dryer if it above 60 degrees.  My neighbors think I am crazy.  I love the way my clothes feel and smell when they hang out to dry.

    First thing I notice:  hair

Advice to younger self:  study a little harder, don’t go out with Chris, give yourself a break

How old would I be:  I think I am right about where I belong now…38 feels good.

  5. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

When is it permissible to lie? Apparently, when you write one thing which has an error, but that thing is changed, you can come in three hours after it has been changed and claim that the thing that is wrong NEEDS to be changed, and that the writer is a dishonest shill for having written it.  Under those circumstances.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy? This place (and its cognates)

What is the first thing you notice about people? Their hair.  Do they have it, and, if so, what color, style etc and do I like it.

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give? DON’T!!!!!!!!!!!

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?  What was the question?

When is it permissible to lie? I can’t lie worth a damn. But I can be tactful.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy? I read labels and talk to myself in the supermarket. I wrote about it yesterday: http://www.motleymoose.com/sho

(I have a big box of rags too.)

What is the first thing you notice about people?
    Eyes. They tell all.

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give? Let’s see, what are those seven deadly sins again… and those ten commandments…

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy? talking and singing to my plants

What is the first thing you notice about people?
    their eyes

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give?
To avoid marrying my first husband

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
depends on the time of day and the weather – when it’s damp and dreary I feel 80ish.  When the sun is out and shining I feel about 30 something (as long as I don’t look in the mirror)

Ain’t no man can avoid being born average, but there ain’t no man got to be common.

Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.

If your stomach disputes you, lie down and pacify it with cool thoughts.

Avoid fried foods, which angry up the blood.

I promised silks I’d post this, so here it is!  This makes about 4 dozen soft batch (chewy) chocolate chip cookies.  And I say ‘My’ recipe, although it comes from the King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion cookbook.

    3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks, 6 ounces) unsalted butter

2/3 cup (5 1/4 ounces) dark brown sugar

    2/3 cup (4 3/4 ounces) granulated sugar

2 tablespoons (1 1/4 ounces) light corn syrup

1 tablespoon cider vinegar or white vinegar

    2 large eggs

    1 tablespoon vanilla extract

    1/2 teaspoon salt

    1/2 teaspoon baking powder

    1/4 teaspoon baking soda

    2 1/4 cups (9 1/2 ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour

3 cups (18 ounces)* semisweet chocolate chips

*[I usually use more than this – adding the 3 cups to the batter to start with, but after the first 2-3 dozen cookies have been scooped out, usually the batter that’s left is low on chips, so I add more based on what it looks like it needs]

    1. Preheat the oven to 375 F.  Lightly grease (or line with parchment) two baking sheets.  [I prefer using parchment paper]

    2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, cream together the butter, sugars, corn syrup, and vinegar, then beat in the eggs.  Beat in the vanilla, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.  Stir in the flour & chocolate chips.

    3. Drop the dough by the tablespoonful onto the prepared baking sheets.  Bake the cookies for 10 minutes, until they’re just set; the centers may still look a bit underdone.  Remove them from the oven, and transfer to a rack to cool.  [Basically the edges will just start to look a little brown; I use a flat metal spatula that doesn’t have slits in it to transfer the cookies so they don’t fall apart in transfer.]

    Nutrition Info (per 1 cookie/29g):  124 cal, 6 g fat, 1 g protein, 5 g complex carb, 12 g sugar, 1 g fiber, 17 mg cholesterol, 40 mg sodium, 60 mg potassium, 31 RE vitamin A, 1 mg iron, 11 mg calcium, 25 mg phosphorus, 7 mg caffeine.

Having company over this afternoon.  Have to finish up cleaning floors and getting dinner ready (roast beef in the crockpot).  Also, I love artichoke hearts!  Yummy!

When is it permissible to lie?

White lies I think are acceptable.  Just need to be careful that you’re not fooling yourself about what is and isn’t a white lie.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy?

Hm.  When I was a practicing Wiccan most people thought it was strange.  These days?  I dunno.

What is the first thing you notice about people?

Online?  Usually the style of their writing (misspellings, grammar, etc.)  In person?  Facial features/expression (do they look annoyed? happy? sad?)

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give?

Tough one.  I probably wouldn’t want to change too much, because I like who I am and where I am today, and part of that is lessons learned.  Maybe “Think things through”?

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?  About 45.  Sadly I’m 36.  Need to change things so those numbers are reversed.

  13. slksfca

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

Until this past year or so I’d have instantly answered ten or fifteen years younger. But I look in the mirror now and see every year of my age (58) swiftly catching up to me.

Friends used to joke that I had a painting in the attic that grew old while I stayed forever young. I think we’ve come to the end of that novel. 😉

  14. Made me remember the first time I got turned on to PBS outside of Sesame Street and that was I Claudius.  First of all it was sexy violent and I was shocked my parents let me watch it at the time, but it was so good.  My Pop went out and got me the 12 Caesars by Suetonius and I knocked out at least 3 monster term papers from that experience.

  15. anotherdemocrat

When is it permissible to lie? When it does no harm. Sometimes it is, if not necessary, at least needed for sanity: When a customer is rattling on & on about something that has nothing to do with the service we provide, I will tell them that our phone queue is blinking, whether it is or not.

What is something you believe in/are into your friends and family think is crazy?  Not “crazy” but my family is amused by my love for science fiction.

What is the first thing you notice about people? eyes

If you could go back in time and advise your younger self, what advice would you give?  I would say: “You are not fat! Believing you are, and your crazy dieting, will make you fat. You’re messing up your metabolism by not eating. Eat food.”

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? 30 – still young enough, but old enough to know a thing or 2

Now I’m going to lie down and watch some TV. I must have something worthwhile DVR’d, at least I hope so, because they are broadcasting awfully slim pickings tonight.

See you all in the morningtime!
