What kind of volunteer work do you do? Doug, Rob, and I collect cans and donations at local supermarkets with a group called “Yes, We Can”. The donations support the Crisis Ministry which is the largest food bank in the Trenton/Princeton area.

Are you tidy or untidy? Untidy.

With fiction, do you prefer realism or something more fantasy oriented? Realism

  2. When faced with aggression or vitriol, do you turn the other cheek, or fight back?

    Depends on the situation.

What kind of volunteer work do you do?

I’ve worked on a lot of political campaigns and I’m on the board of a foundation.

    Are you tidy or untidy?

    Untidy. Definitely.

What is the worst smell you ever smelled?

That would be the stench from the Supreme Court when they selected George Bush.

What is the best smell in the world?

There are many good smells …. but mmmmm bacon!

With fiction, do you prefer realism or something more fantasy oriented?

I like science fiction but I also like crime novels.

Fight or flight:  I won’t stand around and argue with an idiot but I will intervene if someone is being harmed.

Volunteer:  i used to volunteer at the library, now I raise my kids for free.  I have volunteered for campaigns as well.  Once the kids are in school I plan to help out there.

Tidy or untidy:  very very tidy

Worst smell:  I am a veterinarian so bad smells are my business.  The worst was an iinfected anal gland that had been invaded by maggots.  I have pictures at work somewhere.  We cleaned it up, hospitalized her for few days with meds and good supportive care and she acts like nothing ever happened, but damn, that was bad.   Oh and DMSO which was used liberally in the horse barn at school.  It made me gag.

Best smell:  baking bread and my kids heads

Fiction:  I like realism mostly but have been getting into fantasy more and more so I find this a difficult question.  I like both, the give me different things so I can’t pick.

I’ve done both.  Not sure what it depends on.

    Good question!  None.  Bad answer.

    Waxed paper factory.

    Something baking.

Realism.  (But a great writer can make you swallow anything.  Salman Rushdie’s books are not realism, but I like him anyway.)

When faced with aggression or vitriol, do you turn the other cheek, or fight back?  I mute the TV.

What kind of volunteer work do you do? I used to manage the book donations for the local chapter of NAMI.

Are you tidy or untidy? Tidy.

What is the worst smell you ever smelled? Dead critter in the wall.

What is the best smell in the world? The original Jergens Lotion.

With fiction, do you prefer realism or something more fantasy oriented? Realism and/or fantasy with humor, wit, imagination, plot, and well-drawn characters. Oh, and there has to be character development. Like Mr. Penumbra’s 24-hour Bookstore which is on the list of the ten best books I’ve ever read.

  6. Its the Supreme Court Stupid

When faced with aggression or vitriol, do you turn the other cheek, or fight back? Who the fuck wants to know!

What kind of volunteer work do you do? Poltical campaign stuff (canvassing, envelope stuffing, petitioning)

Are you tidy or untidy? Yes

What is the worst smell you ever smelled? Skunk

What is the best smell in the world? Warm Cinnamon Buns

With fiction, do you prefer realism or something more fantasy oriented? Fantasy, generally.

She’s begging Andy Williams not to play The Spinning Song again.  (Your obscure reference of the day.)

Look out, Homer, it’s a trap!

1911 – Merle Oberon, Anglo-Indian actress (who tried to hide her Asian blood her entire career) (d. 1979)

I’ll fix your flat tire, Merle!

1962 – Georgios Papanikolaou, Greek doctor, inventor of the Pap smear (b. 1883)

Ha!  Never knew what the “Pap” stood for.

You know, I never actually smelled a dead critter in a wall. I don’t know why I said that. Read about it in a novel, probably.

It figures that Obama would force America to celebrate Presidents Day during Black History Month.

Dare I post it on FB? LOLOL.

I’m one who doesn’t like confrontation, so I’m likely to walk away, but sometimes there comes a point where I can’t shut up and walkaway, so I’ll fight back.

I’m ashamed to say I don’t do volunteer work nowadays, but I used to go to different schools- both elementary and high school- to talk about deafness with an interpreter. Hard to believe that a social phobe like me was ever was on the lecture circuit. Well, “lecture” may be too strong a word, it was more an informal sit down in a circle and talk about it and answer questions.

Tidy? I’m about in the middle.

Smelling anybody’s vomit is, well, vomit-inducing. Skunks don’t smell that bad, and I smell them nearly every day. Not on purpose, though. LOL.

Roses, turkey roasting in the oven, rosemary, carnations, jasmine, bacon frying, sorry I can’t pick just one.

I can do fantasy once in a while, but realism is my preference

thanks for your postings. Today’s answers:

When faced with aggression or vitriol, do you turn the other cheek, or fight back? I have to admit that my first reaction is to escalate since my comfort zone is way out past most peoples’ it’s a way to fend folks off without bothering my feelings. The only reason it hasn’t ended badly more often is that I am Nancy Reagan petite and like her use it to make normal sized people appear aggressive when they aren’t. It inhibits what they can do when I’m being aggressive. It is a rather persistent character flaw but since I’ve owned up to it I actually don’t do it as often. Still, startle me and that’s what is going to happen.

What kind of volunteer work do you do? I have worked in Democratic Party politics since the 80s, right now I am a county chair. Surely a thankless job in Texas but one held by optimists. Besides we’re super delegates to the state convention and that is actual fun.

Are you tidy or untidy? Mostly tidy unless I’ve fallen into the slough of despond.

What is the worst smell you ever smelled? As a daily assault it would have to be organic chemistry labs.

What is the best smell in the world? The desert at night when the night bloomers are in season, they use scent to attract pollinators so it’s intense and brief.

Turn the other cheek or fight back? If physical threat, turn the other cheek; verbal, try to fight back, although engaging in a battle of wits with someone unarmed is kind of a waste of time.

Volunteer work? Not nearly enough, but I do donate money to the causes I support, but that will change when we move full time to NC. In my community here, over 70% are actively involved in volunteer activities. That was one of the things that really impressed me.

Tidy or untidy? I have become a lot more tidy over the years, but if you just walked into my house, your assessment would be “untidy”.

Worst smell? When my Irish setter – golden retriever mix rolled in a dead bird when we made a pit stop on our way home from Moosehead Lake in Maine. It was gaggingly gross. I found a dog groomer who was about to close for the day and literally begged her to help wash the dog and she did a great job. Bitter Apple spray was a big help in eradicating the smell from the car.

Best smell? Mr. Carolina’s cologne saved for special occasions 😉

Realism or fantasy? Realism. I lose all respect when authors use time travel or other gimmicks to advance a plot.

  12. slksfca

…walk away quietly. I was glad when I first learned a word (“pacifist”) for people like me that wasn’t “wimp.”

Worst smell is probably a corpse flower I smelled long ago. Once is enough!

I’m afraid I’m not very tidy.

I love fantasy when it’s believable, otherwise I guess I prefer realism. But really I like non-fiction best.

    Have a happy Tuesday everyone!

I didn’t know about B&N closing…Looks like my next e-reader will be a Kindle or and Ipad…Aggravates me, I’ve used a Nook for a long time now and have so many e-books. I can use Calibre to reformat, it just irks me to do so.

    Anyway…Questions…

When faced with aggression or vitriol, do you turn the other cheek, or fight back? What kind of volunteer work do you do? Are you tidy or untidy? What is the worst smell you ever smelled? What is the best smell in the world? With fiction, do you prefer realism or something more fantasy oriented?

    Fight or Flight

I’m pretty well a turn the other cheek person…I try to be civil, however it’s a case of someone being hurt or threatened, I’m apt to say or do something to stop it.

    Volunteer Work

I do a lot of work as a disability educational advocate. Also, I try to put to use what little abilities I have craft wise into making caps for chemo patients, baby items for babies of low income families or preemies in NICU, and winter weather wear/afghans for various organizations.

    Tidy/Untidy

Untidy, not really messy but definitely not tidy.

    Worst Smell

Rotten eggs– my grandmother put some old eggs into her coop nests to encourage her hens to lay–and we’re talking months old. My sister thought she was collecting fresh eggs and dropped a basketful of those putrid bombs..Never have forgotten that.

    Best Smell

Anything baking…especially bread or something spicy

    Fantasy or Realism

Fantasy is preferred, but I can enjoy both.
