Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Daily F Bomb, Friday 2/1/13

Happy Friday! Don’t forget to tip your server without leaving snide notes!

Questions, I has them: What was your least favorite subject in school? Do you still hate it? Do you have any phobias? What are you allergic to? Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to? What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

Row, row, row your boat gently down the Twitter stream…

On This Day

In 1709,  Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe, was rescued after being shipwrecked on a deserted island off the coast of Chile.

In 1790, the Supreme Court of the United States convened for the first time in New York City.

In 1861, Texas voted to secede from the Union.

In 1865, Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

In 1958, Egypt and Syria merged to form the United Arab Republic, which lasted almost 3 years (it dissolved in 1961).

In 1960, four black college students began a sit-in protest at a lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C., where they’d been refused service.

In 1978, Polish film director Roman Polanski skipped bail and fled the United States to avoid prosecution for having sex with a 13 year old girl.

In 1982, “Late Night with David Letterman” premiered on NBC.

In 1996, the Communications Decency Act was passed by Congress. It regulated, among other things, decency on the Internet. Parts were blocked and later struck down.

In 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia on mission STS-107 disintegrated during reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts aboard. It was 17 years and a few days after the Challenger accident.

In 2004, Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl halftime wardrobe malfunction occurred. The Bush era FCC counted every single e-mail received, unread, as a complaint, even though many were in support of Jackson.

  1. What was your least favorite subject in school?

    Art and gym.

    Do you still hate it?

I don’t do art; I don’t hate LOOKING at art, I just hate doing it. I don’t play sports, though I do workout from time to time.

    Do you have any phobias?

I used to be phobic about large dogs. I still am not a big fan of dogs, but it’s not as bad as it was.

    What are you allergic to?

    Cat hair.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    The entire Republican party!

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

If I knew what they were, I might know which ones I liked and disliked.

  2. Lori Challinor

Well, I hated any special events at school – field trips, etc.  I particularly hated school parties.  I was never socially comfortable and these events just underlined that obvious fact even more.  I would still rather undergo unmedicated root canals than make small talk.  I do public speaking so it’s not the speaking part – it’s the small group chatting I suck at.

I’m allergic to a bunch of antibiotics and all sorts of pollen.

I wouldn’t know a present day fashion if it attacked me and tore my Ugg boots off me.  I do, however, have a 22 year old daughter and judging from that, it appears that wearing things really tight is fashionable.  If I could wear a friar’s robe I would, so I’d venture and say “Form fitting clothes are not my thing.”

    Here are a few answers:

What was your least favorite subject in school? I am one of those disgusting people who was pretty good at everything.

Do you have any phobias? No

What are you allergic to? Allergies, I haz them. I am seriously allergic (we are talking hives here) to wool. So are blue jersey dad and Son 1 (wool gives them asthma). We don’t know about Sons 2 and 3 since we live in a wool-free house.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to? I suspect that proximity to John McCain would also give me hives. Lesley Graham too.

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with? Leggings, no one wants to see that much of my 61-year-old butt.

  4. In 2004, Janet Jackson’s infamous Super Bowl halftime wardrobe malfunction occurred. The Bush era FCC counted every single e-mail received, unread, as a complaint, even though many were in support of Jackson.

    Facts are for weenies!!

I believe that Sauron is on to something … I know that I am very much interested in visiting Mt. Doom after seeing that lovely postcard from the abyss.

What is this nonsense? “Shape Up With Pickles Time (don’t ask me!)”. Of course I am going to ask you!! But I am NOT going to wait around to hear the answer.

Yesterday, when I heard that today it would be 30 below zero, I went out and stocked up on Dark Chocolate. I am obviously ahead of my time.

  5. Gabby Giffords Tells Congress To Act On Gun Control

Former Arizona representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in 2011, delivered the opening remarks yesterday at a congressional hearing on gun violence that later featured testimony from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. What do you think?

“Come on. If everyone who got shot felt the need to speak to Congress about gun control, we’d never hear the end of it.” ~ Janet Mooney – Unemployed

What was your least favorite subject in school? Science, because you can never stop asking why. Not to mention dissecting anything is disgusting!

Do you still hate it? Nope, I find it fascinating, especially since I stopped asking why!

Do you have any phobias? Lol! Is there anything that I am NOT afraid of? Let’s see, my biggest are claustrophobia and arachnephobia.

(This one is pretty funny, I may have that too! Hellenologophobia- Fear of Greek terms or complex scientific terminology)

What are you allergic to? Cats and dogs. Good thing I only have one of each!

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?
    Sarah Palin

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with? PASTELS!  Oh the horror!!

  7. Via Chicago

I’ll get this in while I can. Still can’t post from work even w/work arounds.

What was your least favorite subject in school?

When I was younger it was math, but it came to be my favorite. Just took one teacher to turn it around for me.

    Do you have any phobias?

I’m afraid of heights when there are no guardrails. I’m not depressed or suicidal in any way, but I’ve always feared that I’ll get an uncontrollable momentary urge to jump.  Is that weird? If there’s a fence or a window I’d have to open I’m not scared because I’m confident I could restrain any urges much more quickly than it would take to open the window or climb the fence. I’ve never actually had the urge mind you, just the fear of the urge.  Ugh.

    What are you allergic to?

Something in the air that doesn’t coincide with all the most popular environmental allergies. Annoying at times, but not quite serious enough to track down.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    Dennis Miller is particularly grating.

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

Man capris.  Though the term itself has a nice flow to it.

Happy Friday, ya North Woods loiterers.

Imagine having all those foods at a “February Feast.”

Answers to the most pressing questions:

    Math and Science.

Still don’t care for math that much, but I love science now.

    Yeah, a bunch of phobias.

As they say in the medical field, NKA.

I seem to be allergic to republicans who come on TV. Will not listen to them at all. I switch the channel immediately.

Not really up with fashion. Might be out of fashion now- laughs- but I don’t really like the dresses over pants thing.

  9. lulu57

cold, windy, snowy. Welcome to February in Maryland! 🙂

How to Shape Up with Pickles: first, get two 10 pound pickles. Hold the pickles perpendicular to your pectorals. Lift and separate.

What was your least favorite subject in school?

Math. When I dropped out of high school algebra, my teacher said it was the smartest thing I’d done all year.

    Do you still hate it?

Nope. After five semesters of it in college, we have achieved detente.

    Do you have any phobias?

Some things I am irrationally afraid of: heights. Spiders. Live volcanos. Disco. Perky people. Gin.

    What are you allergic to?

Not sure I am allergic to anything, but I have a sensitivity to pine nuts, which means I can’t eat most pestos.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    TV game show hosts

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

    Duckface. What the duck?

  10. JG in MD

What was your least favorite subject in school? Math beyond my ability. I stopped at Algebra 1 and Plane Geometry because anything 3-dimensional was bewildering.

Do you still hate it? Anything 3-dimensional is still bewildering.

Do you have any phobias? Not actual phobias but almost: Walking, the telephone, crowds and noise. Yes, my everyday life and health are a bit impaired.

What are you allergic to? Calcium channel blockers. A doctor prescribed one for me once, then dismissed my complaints that my throat felt itchy. “Do you have a cough?” “Well, no, but-” “It’s nothing. Next?” I burst into tears when I got back to the office. Now I think my throat might have closed.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to? Yes, many. Besides the obvious, like Cheney and GWB, the first ones to give me the cold shudders were Addison and Yoo.

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with? Bell bottom pants. Nobody looks good in them. Things I dare not wear? Anything wide at the top makes me look like a mushroom.

  11. kirbybruno

A couple of weeks ago somewhere here I linked to bird seed ornaments. They don’t do well in the rain, and we had a coupple of rainy days so there was no food out there for a bit. When it got cold again on Wednesday, I put a couple out, and within minutes my beautiful cardinals were back, how do they know?!

  12. slksfca

At least in elementary school. Later it was music (chorus, chamber singers), followed by history, then (sometimes) English. I never really took to the maths and sciences back then, something I’ve come to regret since. But you’d have to pry my Liberal Arts out of my cold, dead hands. ;-p

  13. bubbanomics

    * What was your least favorite subject in school?

    Bible.

    * Do you still hate it?

No, because now I can read it if i want without the fundamentalist editorializing.

    * Do you have any phobias?

Nope. Sold my last one to a guy in Santa Monica last week.

    * What are you allergic to?

    nothing i know of.

    * Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    Mitch McConnell.

    * What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

shoes with long pointy ends that almost look like elf shoes.  I hated them when women started wearing them… when the men’s versions started appearing, I figured the mayans might be right.

  14. fogiv

What was your least favorite subject in school?

    calculus.  i’m a lover, not a calculator.

    Do you still hate it?

i don’t really hate anything — life is too short.

except beets. i’m okay with them existing, but srsly, keep them the fuck away from me.

    Do you have any phobias?

    phobophobia

    What are you allergic to?

    nothing, that i know of.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    kardashians?

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

    pants.

  15. sarahnity

I’m not really tuned into fashion, so I don’t know what I hate, except I can’t stand 3/4 length sleeves.  I seriously go buggy if I have to wear them all day.

  16. Gee

Questions, I has them: What was your least favorite subject in school? Do you still hate it? Do you have any phobias? What are you allergic to? Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to? What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

In Junior High, it was Shop.  I’m still no good at making things.  In college, it was Calculus.  I was good at math until I met Calculus, and I’m sure I don’t remember how I managed to pass the course.

I’m not crazy about heights, and I would never go spelunking either.

I am allergic to the pollen of many trees.  It’s only a problem in the spring.

Tom DeLay, Grover Norquist, Karl Rove, Darrell Issa, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Dr. Oz, Deepak Chopra, Reince Priebus, Tucker Carlson, Rush Limbaugh, Jenny McCarthy, Dennis Miller… Uh oh, you’ve tricked me into making one of those enemies lists!

I’m too long away from the fashion world.  🙁

  17. Gee

On FB today, my niece was railing against “irregardless,” and a friend of hers said, “What I really hate is when people say, ‘Let’s conversate!'”

I’ve gotta say I’d never heard that one before.

I actually think it’s fun and creative to work backwards from a word like conversation and make up a new word.  Of course, some people do it without realizing there’s already a perfectly good existing word to use.  😉

  18. What was your least favorite subject in school?

Really loved it all. Does that make me a bad person?

    Do you have any phobias?

A bit of claustrophobia, but I’ve made myself deal with that and it doesn’t really stop me from doing anything that isn’t incredibly stupid (like cave diving, which is categorically not right).

    What are you allergic to?

    Cat hair, pollen.

Are there any public figures that you might as well be allergic to?

    Sarah Palin

What present day fashion can you NOT get on board with?

Pants half way down (is that present, or is that already past? How out of touch with current fashions can one be and still be allowed in public?).

I am mostly stuck in my Old Ways (jeans and comfies at home, pressed jeans/shined black leather sneakers/pressed shirt and jacket at work, like a good suit mostly for the overseas crowd).
