    this morning, followed by sleet/freezing rain.  Had to clear the driveway and was an hour late for work.  Oh, well.  It LOOKS pretty.

    Answers:

    Do drinks taste better out of bottles or cans? Out of wine glasses, silly!

    What food does everyone else love but you hate? Raisins

    What sounds best? Records, CDs or MP3s (and other electronic variations)? LPs when played on a really good system.  You need to have an old Macintosh tube amp (NOT made by Apple), a top notch turntable (Thorenz or B&O) and really good speakers (Altecs, perhaps).  Otherwise, the difference in sound quality is minimal.

    Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was your age…?” I have two 16 year old daughters.  Nuff said.

    Did you stop yourself in time? Say what?

    Hardwood or carpet? Harwood

    White, whole wheat, sourdough, rye, pumpernickel, or other? Depends on what I am having it with.  White rarely.   Others (like multigrain) usually

    Has your handwriting deteriorated with the advent of computers? Are you kidding?  Have you ever seen my chicken scratches?

    He’s been in Iraq twice, Afghaniztan twice, but this is the first time I’ve been able to go to one of these.

    Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was your age…?” Did you stop yourself in time? Nah, not really.

    Hardwood or carpet? I’d love hardwood, but I’m stuck with smells-like-dogs carpet.

    White, whole wheat, sourdough, rye, pumpernickel, or other? What do you mean, “it depends???” Is that related to the bread question? Well, yeah, it depends. LOL. Ham and cheese on rye, yes, grilled cheese on rye, not so much.

    Has your handwriting deteriorated with the advent of computers? I’d love to blame it on computers, but truth is my handwriting has always been atrocious.

    Has anything else? Grammar, prolly, er… probably.

    Can you still be a feminist and be subservient to shoes? Next set of questions ask what is the one thing women love but you don’t get, and my answer will be shoes. LOL. They are a necessity, but not worth spending more than $20 on, IMNSHO.

    Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was your age…?” Did you stop yourself in time? Yes, and no I did not stop myself. I often remind my students that I wrote my PhD dissertation on a TYPEWRITER!!

    Hardwood or carpet? Hardwood. I have allergies.

    What do you mean, “it depends???”  There’s a old joke about this that starts boxers or briefs. Has your handwriting deteriorated with the advent of computers? Yes, but it was not great to begin with.

    Has anything else? Sometimes I feel a bit ADD with the internet.

    Can you still be a feminist and be subservient to shoes?I have big feet, and I have a hard time finding nice shoes, but I am subservient to earrings, and I still see myself as a feminist.

    Dear Colleagues:

    When President Obama asked me to serve as Secretary of the Interior, I knew it would be an awesome responsibility to serve as a steward of our nation’s lands, waters, wildlife, and heritage.  The past four years have been very special and meaningful for me.

    After much reflection, I have decided to announce that I intend to return to my home state of Colorado and my family, having fulfilled my promise to President Obama to serve four years as Secretary. I have informed President Obama that I intend to leave Interior by the end of March.

    Here at the Department of the Interior, we have much to be proud of. Our work is vital to the health of the U.S. economy, our identity as a people, and to President Obama’s vision for a secure energy future.  We are the custodians of America’s natural landscapes, history, and culture. We manage one-fifth of the nation’s landmass, vast resources off our coasts, and the energy and mineral estate that belongs to all of us.  And we have a solemn obligation to uphold the federal government’s responsibilities to Indian nations and advocate for America’s island communities.

    Since 2009, we have together launched an aggressive reform agenda to restore Interior’s independence and integrity, overhauling offshore oil and gas development oversight and raising the bar on safety standards; spurred a renewable energy revolution at Interior, with the largest solar energy projects in the world now under construction on public lands in the West and a dynamic plan for wind energy in America’s oceans; led a bold agenda for American land conservation, partnering with communities to conserve our nation’s crown jewels; and tackled long-standing injustices in Indian Country, including settling the Cobell litigation.

    I have often said that “the joy is in the journey.”  The past four years have truly been joyous in large part because of you, the more than 70,000 public servants at Interior. From coast to coast, I have seen firsthand that the heart of this Department lies in the people who have chosen a career serving as stewards of our land, water and people.  Thank you for your work on behalf of this nation.

    The strength of our economy, the strength of our spirit and the strength of our union are all tied to what we do here. I wish you the best as you continue your important work; I know that Interior’s mission will continue and thrive under your care.

    I truly believe that our nation’s best days are ahead of us. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with you as we work to pass on a better future to our children and our grandchildren.

    In 1969, two manned Soviet Soyuz spaceships became the first vehicles to dock in space and transfer personnel.

    I thought the Gemini program had done that back in the mid 60s, but it turns out they didn’t actually dock, they just flew really close next to each other (like a foot apart) for 20 minutes, which is the really hard part, trust me.  They weren’t set up to actually dock, but they could have opened the hatches and shook hands.  I wonder why they didn’t.  Then in ’66 they did a docking between a manned and an unmanned craft.  I guess once they had done those two they were confident they could do the whole maneuver on the Apollo missions.

    Anyway, that was cool to learn.

    Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was your age…?” Yes, dammit, I have nieces.

    Did you stop yourself in time? I try, or else I do the little old person voice, or change it to “back in olden times.” I still remember people saying that to me!

    Hardwood or carpet? Hardwood, easier to clean if you have furry pets. With occasional rugs to warm the feet.

    Hardwood — I am removing carpeting from the stairs. Gak. The damn stuff is old enough to vote and filthy — probably dirty old Republican carpeting. Next steps are to remove the staples, sand the wood, stain treads, paint risers, then get a pro to put in a sisal runner. Extraordinarily therapeutic for destructive impulses. I imagine I am yanking up and throwing away nasty, obstructionist Republican pols.

    Did you stop yourself in time? You’re kidding right? Never miss the opportunity to relate the essence of your childhood to your offspring–that whole walk two miles to school uphill both ways…in the snow.

    What sounds best? Records, CDs or MP3s (and other electronic variations)? Live (my hearing is too damaged already to tell any difference in recorded versions)

    Have you ever caught yourself saying, “When I was your age…?” Probably (I tend to catch myself saying all sorts of things that make me cringe)

    Did you stop yourself in time? Not likely (I am well accustomed to the taste of shoe leather…my own)

    Hardwood or carpet? Hardwood (with Turkish rugs)

    White, whole wheat, sourdough, rye, pumpernickel, or other? Pumpernickel or Rye (or Swirl)

    What do you mean, “it depends???”  Often it means “NO” (akin to “We’ll see”)

    Has your handwriting deteriorated with the advent of computers? I have always had deplorable handwriting (much to the nuns’ dismay, the Palmer Method did not help)

    Has anything else? My reading (I read fewer books, read more material online)

    Can you still be a feminist and be subservient to shoes? I think a lot of women’s shoes look like torture devices (which is why I get a bit worried when I think about how much I like seeing them wear them)

    When you’re wrong, you’re wrong. I thought that by ruling out any way to bypass the debt limit, the White House was setting itself up, at least potentially, for an ignominious cave-in. But it appears that the strategy has worked, and it’s the Republicans giving up. I’m happy to concede that the president and team called this one right.

    There’ll be diaries from the HOFers admitting the error of their predictions, right? Right?
