Carlos Santana slams immigration laws at Civil Rights Game

ATLANTA — The stage on the infield grass for the pregames ceremonies at baseball’s Civil Rights Game included actor Morgan Freeman and Hall of Famer Ernie Banks, but also the Grammy-award winning artist Carlos Santana, a fan of the Oakland Athletics.

Santana caused a stir in Turner Field on an appropriate day to be talking about social issues.

Santana was on stage to receive Major League Baseball’s Beacon of Change award. He took the microphone and said Arizona and the city of Atlanta should be “ashamed” for passing immigration bills, that have been criticized widely as racially motivated.

Norm Magnusson's I-75 Project

Norm Magnuson has created an absolutely brilliant guerilla-marketing campaign for political ideas based on the historical markers seen along the side of the road in a number of American States.

Huckabee Declines to Run Open Thread

Well Huckabee won’t be running according to his announcement today.  Have to give credit to Happy for picking long, long ago a credible candidate as the GOP 2012 nominee but there is a long way to go to the convention.

My guy bailed.  I was a bit disappointed, not because I think Huckabee is a great alternative but because he brought a bit of civility to the partisan discourse even though representing the Evangelical wing of the party.  Things like this:

“I think [Obama] has been an exemplary husband to his wife and an extraordinary father to his daughters,” Huckabee said earlier this year. “Frankly, America needs a good role model like that.”

Ben Smith – Huckabee: The loyal opposition Politico 14 May 11

That was refreshing.  On the other hand he has the social values and, in many ways, the world view of a medieval Pope.  So be it.  I was looking forward to a number of other counter-intuitive gestures from him in the course of the campaign.

Now the field is pretty much comprised of looneys, narcissistic publicity seekers and has-beens.  I’m convinced that the Tea Party phenomenon will drive Republicans to an outsider, populist nominee who will further split the traditional Republican coalition of corporate influence and middle-class values voters.

How about you?  Do you think this is an opportunity for the Establishment or an insurgent?

Open Thread: Starring Rand Paul

Rand Paul wins the “WTF?” award for the week with his vile take on Universal Health Care. Speaking at a Senate  Health, Education, and Labor Committee hearing on May 11th, Senator Paul the Lesser artfully disgustingly compared the right to health care to slavery.

Yup.

Slavery.

Univision's Crusade on Immigration

By: Inoljt, http://mypolitikal.com/

Sometimes watching cable news is a tiring endeavor. Seeing the same people yelling, the same old political arguments, and the same accusations can be wearying. Indeed, nowadays there is not actually much news in a cable news show. Instead it is mostly political entertainment.

This blogger has therefore taken to checking out the news on Univision; it is always interesting to get a different perspective than the old cable-news paradigm. While most news does not go outside America, for instance, Univision devotes a substantial amount of coverage to neglected Latin America.

Then there is immigration. Univision is very, very passionate about immigration.

More below.

Huckabee's Cartoon History of America

I caught a glimpse of something silly on Hardball a few minutes ago and decided to see if I could make any sense of it. I only caught the very tail end of a cartoon…a bizarre cartoon. It was almost like one of those Japanese anime renderings of our tabloid fodder.

It took some digging, mainly because the clip in question is marked on Youtube as:

This video is unlisted. Only those with the link can see it.

I’ve never seen that before. An unlisted video..only available to those with the secret link?

What is Mr. Huckabee up to?

I’m glad I stuck with my hunt, though, because I am still laughing at the absurdity.
