Sunday All Day Check-in for the Herd: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the Weather Critter Comment are still welcome. 🙂

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

The Recommended list, defined:

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture.

– The Rec list algorithm, per Kysen:

The Rec List is based upon number of recs and number of days on the list.

The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

Don’t use the Recommendation button as a ‘I read this and I like it’ indicator….you can say that in the comments and by rating the comments contained within the diary.

– Per me:

… any post that reflects our values and gets us to think about who we are and our place in the world is valuable to progressives.

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

  1. Obviously, I woke up way too early.

Jim just got up. Sleepy head…

Last night we had dinner with FFDIL and her parents. Our son will be lucky to have such terrific people as his in-laws.

This morning we are supposed to talk to Son. He’s on the schedule to fly tomorrow morning for the first time. They’ve been doing ground school stuff this past week, we think. We don’t really know as we haven’t talked to him all week. Everything we know is from FFDIL (his flight schedule) and the website (other basic info).

Nothing else planned for the day, though I would bet I have a nap coming…

Also I’ll work more on my medallion quilt. Finally made some progress yesterday. It had been put away for more than a month. Kind of a long break for me.

OH weather report. Heading to 90ish and good chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

would get things done today and have started by digging out the corners of the bathroom.   My apartment is about 15 years old and since it was built primarily for university students, appliances and fixtures are, shall we say, not of the highest quality.  The fiberglass tub and shower have turned a funky pale yellow and has proved impossible to improve even after using a specialized fiberglass cleaner.  After that, I’ll make pico de gallo for soft tacos.  The farmers market season for strawberries has passed so I settled for tomatoes and fresh herbs which means a lunch of toasted country bread coated with olive oil & balsamic vinegar, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.  Best. sandwich. ever.

Dang, the power just went out.  Thank goodness for the UPS.

Woke up to find 14 new chicks under the porch. Prolific egg layer/sitter hens around here.

Reading the news – see that Snowden fellow is on his way to Moscow, “home of freedom and transparency” (do I need a snark tag?)

I guess I’m a cynic, since having survived an assassination attempt by the KGB back in 1971 in Congo-Brazzaville, I hold no illusions about Russia and its spy agencies.

Anyway, have a pleasant Sunday folks.

Off to prepare for the morning Orange comments 🙂

in the desert and all the critters woke up happy. They’ve been fed and found their spots for the after breakfast naps. We don’t have much planned for the day which really is nice.

  5. “Anyone bothering to look 10 feet down the road knows that the real loser is President Obama’s second term agenda, particularly on immigration,” a House Republican leadership aide said, “How are we ever going to rely on an agreement, or a vote count, or a promise from House Democrats?”

But the grumbling Republican staffers say that the farm bill drama highlighted differences between Boehner and his second-in-command, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. Boehner publicly supported the bill and pushed for its passage – a rarity for the speaker – while Cantor pushed for an amendment that peeled off possible Democratic supporters for the bill – votes that could have helped Boehner muscle the legislation to passage.

“The first time [Majority Leader Cantor] had ever spoken on the floor about the farm bill was about an amendment that was a deal breaker,” the GOP aide said, referring to an amendment introduced by Rep Steve Southerland, R-Fla. That amendment, which Cantor took to the floor to support, would apply federal welfare work requirements to food stamp programs. It passed 227-198.

Ready for that guy to go ahead and tightrope walk over the Grand Canyon just so they’ll quit showing that footage of his relative falling off of one.

Hope all have the day they wish to have.

It’s going to be another hot one here.

Worked yesterday.  Had a great time actually.  My boss was there and we talked for an hour after the patients had all gone home.  It was nice.  Had a babysitter last night so my husband and I went out to watch the hawks game.

Today we are hanging around this morning then going swimming at my parents house then eating some ribs!

Hot and humid here today.  Through the end of the week really.  Hope you all are well.

A quiet moment before a busy day begins. The fast changing PNW weather means we’re making indoor or outdoor plans for a family dinner this afternoon. Light rain means on the porches at our son’s house, sunshine means outdoor tables, heavy rain means the dining room…..sheesh!

  9. I did the yogurt yesterday in the oven, which involved monitoring the temp fairly frequently, turning the oven back on just to fire up, etc.

When I first asked about this a couple of weeks ago, someone (I think it was Padre) said they made a yogurt cooker with a styrofoam cooler and a light bulb. So Jim is testing wattages to see what gives a good consistent temperature for it. The 75 watt bulb was way too hot. Now trying 25. It’s still too hot… Maybe with it propped slightly open…

    It’s SCIENCE!!

headed for mid-eighties, and near ninety for the next few days. With the usual ridiculous humidity :).

Just me and the dog, mourning the Bruins loss last night.

Daughter The Younger had her middle school musical last night. It was fun and cute, as usual. And it was short, so I didn’t miss any of the game. Although, in hindsight, I wouldn’t have missed much 🙁

It’s raining. That’s fine with me, since I was going to stay in anyway, but once again Rhona may be planning to go to the pool. I haz a sad for her.

She had six petsits on Friday. She deserves the kind of break she wants.

The windows are spattered with it and the rooftops are shiny with pools of water. More and heavier rain in store tomorrow, which could get in the way of a hiking trip I was planning to join. But in the mud? I don’t like that idea a bit.

Mass isn’t until 10:30 on Sundays, so I decided to not even set my alarm clock!  Got a full eight hours in for the first time in months.

Awoke to a bright but overcast and muggy day.  Earlier in the week, the forecasters were telling us we’d have a full weekend of sunshine, and they were partially right.  Clouds and sprinkles have come and gone at intervals, but we’ve had our share of glorious summer weather in between.  Now they’re saying today bodes some “isolated thunderstorms.”  I happen to love them, so I ain’t complainin’.

I’m going to keep my homily short today.  That’s not an easy task for me, given my propensity for long-windedness.  But the Gospel is the passage from Matthew about setting aside our feelings of ill will toward each other before making an offering at the altar.  It’s a pretty easy point to make, and doesn’t require much, if any, clarification on my part.  Except that I want to emphasize the point Jesus makes about how impossible it is to reap any rewards if our hearts allow us to call anyone “Raca!”  That’s an ancient epithet roughly equivalent to today’s N or F words.  Again, I don’t think it’ll take a lot of verbiage to make the point.

After Mass and the social hour, I have a phone call to make which won’t wait until office hours — to the mother of a young man whom I’m trying to get into drug rehab.  He’s ready.  It’s a matter of beds and funding.  Then, I’m contemplating a leisurely country drive to survey my family’s wheat ranch.  My mother depends on its income, and I should check this year’s situation for myself.

Blessings to all on this wondrous day.

I turned on the ball game without sound, took off my glasses, and fell asleep on the couch instantly. I never go to sleep that fast at night, only in the daytime. I slept hard for two hours, woke up at 4. The sun is shining bright and hot. I’m feeling mellow.

Jusr arrived at Seattle from East Coast.  People are surprisingly cheerful given the cloudy skies and prolonged drizzle. Maybe closer one is to DC the more cynical one is..
