Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Dec. 14th thru Dec. 20th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings diaries give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

In lieu of daily check-ins, which have gone on hiatus, Welcomings diaries will be posted at the start of each week (every Sunday morning) and then, if necessary due to a large number of comments, again on Wednesday or Thursday to close out the week. To find the diaries, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

  1. Protesters Rally In ‘Justice For All’ Marches In 3 Cities

Thousands of demonstrators gathered today for a “Justice for All” march in the nation’s capital to protest decisions in Missouri and New York not to indict police officers involved in the deaths of two black men.

Meanwhile, similar numbers showed up for a rally in New York, according to Newsday and hundreds gathered in Boston, The Boston Globe reports.

My Twitter stream was filled with photos of people marching (peacefully) in the streets.

    Washington DC

    Eric Garner’s eyes, NYC

It was also, surprisingly, filled with photos of protests at unlikely places like the bench at the Notre Dame women’s basketball game:

If enough people care about justice, we can force change. It should start with a Michael Bell Law at the federal level, not just in Wisconsin:

Ten years ago, 21-year-old Michael Bell Jr. was pulled over by police on suspicion of drunken driving and running a stop sign. He was stopped right in front of his house where he lived with his mom and sister in Kenosha, Wis., about an hour south of Milwaukee.

Dash cam footage from inside the squad car shows Bell exiting the vehicle he was driving, where he was confronted by an officer who grabbed his arm. The two walked off-camera, where police tried to arrest him. A struggle ensued, and while his mom and sister watched from the house, Bell was shot, point-blank, in the head.[…]

The Kenosha Police Department’s detective division and internal affairs division immediately conducted an investigation. … Within 48 hours, the department had determined that the shooting was justified, that the use of force was proper and that none of the officers had done anything wrong. […]

The law they put forth would make Wisconsin the first state in the nation to mandate, on the legislative level, that if an officer was involved with a loss of life, that outside investigators must come in and collect the data and investigate that shooting.

Michael Bell’s father spent 10 years trying to get this law passed and finally got it passed and signed this past summer.

I’ll be wearing short sleeves & sandals to church

Overslept – I know, me oversleeping. Eating breakfast, watching Up. As soon as my brain starts working, I need to figure out next week’s food.

I’ve got a creative day planned, with some time in both my sewing room and the garden. If I do all I hope to get done I know I’ll have time on the sofa with my book as well…..my creaky knees will need to rest!

    means 3 KWH production per day.  Really sunny this time of year means 5 KWH per day.  Going into the last full week of the year at work (we’ll be closed from 12/23 through 1/4 and back on the 5th) and my last Quorum Court meeting 12/18.  The year is indeed winding down.  Next Sunday I’ll turn my mattress and maybe add some (mild) pine/conifer oil to my laundry as part of my “celebration”.  But that’s next Sunday.  Now I’m trying to arrange a wedding for 12/31 with someone who would prefer not paying for a site.  Weather permitting she’s thinking doing it on the Square (the lights will still be up).  If not we may do it in my living room. 🙂  Anyway, we’re all alive and breathing (very important that those two go together) and I understand that’s a good thing.  {{{HUGS}}}

“I would do it again in a minute,” Mr. Cheney said in a spirited, emotional appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He denied that waterboarding and related interrogation tactics were torture, noting that three of the last four attorneys general had agreed with his view.

    and

Asked again whether he was satisfied with a program that erroneously locked up detainees, he replied, “I have no problem as long as we achieve our objective.”

  6. It is 44 degrees in Madison with an expected high of 46. Fog now and light rain this evening turning into snow overnight.

Watching my Twitter feed yesterday, I was reminded that it was the two year anniversary of the Newtown massacre. And, sadly, nothing has changed, except to get worse. We have made no progress towards getting guns out of the hands of dangerous people, a simple commonsense rule change. Instead, the NRA is more powerful than ever, people want more guns to protect themselves from the more guns that others are buying, people are openly carrying loaded weapons to shop for groceries. And every day, kids faces being blown off by unsecured weapons in the home “protectin’ freedumbs”.

Today there should be votes in the Senate to confirm some of the president’s appointees and new judges. It will likely be the last work of the 113th Congress and the last time that good government programs have a chance to have good people in place to run them.

    See all y’alls later!

Was busy from the time I got up until the time I staggered to bed, having packed a week’s worth of chores into two days. Need to leave in few minutes to go to my son’s house.

Have half the Christmas presents wrapped. What a mess it makes! I spread a sheet on the bed to do it. Didn’t put any ribbons on, will do that just before distribution time. I can’t put them under our tiny tree because Monty Beagle will scratch the paper off.

Watching the news with apprehension. My favorite city in the world is undergoing a hostage situation. Hope it ends peacefully. The news clips remind me that it’s summer in Sydney.

Felt very encouraged by the marches all over the country on Saturday. Even the WaPo couldn’t ignore it. They actually had a story in the front section on  page 2, instead of relegating their coverage to a tiny paragraph in the Metro section.

Wishing a good day to all!

I walked for 35 minutes this morning! Woohoo. Now I’m eating breakfast & drinking tea. I spilled a bunch of water because I took my pitcher apart to let it dry out over the weekend & I can’t figure out how to get the gasket that goes around the top (where the filter is) back on. Sigh. But — I walked! And I’ll google directions about the camelbak pitcher.

Music wasn’t playing when I woke up. The most recent time I woke up. I know I woke up at least 3 times last night. Maybe this morning’s walk will help tonight. Maybe I’ll walk again leaving work — up & down the ramps in the parking garage isn’t that bad.

The hostage situation in Australia is so sad & scary – but this response to it is awesome. If you’re on Twitter, check out #illridewithyou. Since this situation has brought out racists in droves, people are volunteering to be on the public transport services with others who are afraid because they wear traditional attire or “look Muslim”. I hope this link works: I’ll Ride With You hashtag

Went to a gorgeous concert yesterday of Medieval music at the Cloisters, a gorgeous museum made up of pieces of Medieval architecture bought or taken from Europe and filled with tapestries, paintings, sculptures also taken, one way or another, from Europe.

Have to go stand in line at the post office with packages for France. But first coffee, the news, and  wishes for you and our planet.

  10. bfitzinAR

2/3 of this month has been overcast and I have SAD issues.  My DIL and I went “lights” viewing over the weekend – some very lovely displays along with the tasteless and cornball.  Over in the upper-income side of town we saw a great spread – lights outlining the multi-story, dormer windowed, house with lighted “seasonal” stuff all over the yard plus a string of red lights connecting the house with the tops of some very tall trees around the perimeter and also connecting the trees to each other.  Definitely a blowout there.  And next door was totally dark – if there was even a wreath on the door I couldn’t see it – except for a white light arrow pointing to the neighbor’s house and the one white lighted word (pause for effect) “DITTO”

    I broke up, my DIL had to pull over – she was laughing too hard to drive – and I’m still snickering thinking about it.  Hope it gives you all a snicker, too.  {{{HUGS}}}

  11. princesspat

We ended the day with a family dinner last night…..my LOUD sons are most entertaining, it was fun to be with the grand girls, and my DIL has been busy helping friends in real need. She is teaching the girls some important lessons re giving to others.

My knees are already weary today so I’ll rest this morning and carry on this afternoon.

  12. It is 41 degrees in Madison with an expected daytime high of 40. It will rain most of the morning (no snow!) and then give way to colder temperatures tonight.

There was some good news yesterday, besides the confirmation of a Surgeon General and the continued mockery of Ted Cruz. The Supreme Court declined to hear the Arizona challenge to medical abortions, leaving stand the lower court ruling that they can continue. Also, Peace Corps volunteers had their insurance coverage expanded to include abortions in cases of rape, incest, or a life-threatening pregnancy. Another example of how difficult it is to decry the passage of a Big Pile of Laws that include things you don’t like and things you support.

Busy day! See all y’all later!!

  13. He was basically told to “shut up and play football, boy” by the Cleveland Police Department after he wore a t-shirt asking for justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford.

His statement, not always eloquent but sincere and heartfelt:

Before I made the decision to wear the T-shirt, I understood I was putting that reputation in jeopardy to some of those people who wouldn’t necessarily agree with my perspective. I understood there was going to be backlash, and that scared me, honestly. But deep down I felt like it was the right thing to do. If I was to run away from what I felt in my soul was the right thing to do, that would make me a coward, and I can’t live with that. […]

I have a 2-year-old little boy … That little boy is my entire world. And the No. 1 reason for me wearing the T-shirt was the thought of what happened to Tamir Rice happening to my little Austin scares the living hell out of me.

Good for him taking that risk. And fie on the Cleveland PD for denying him the right to speak out and in such an offensive way.

Jan – thanks for your early morning tech support 🙂

Heading to school for my final-final

Then more papers to grade – and finally a break till the end of January.

Have to plan for my cataract surgery – sooner rather than later.

My eye doctor told me the really interesting history of Sir Harold Ridley:

In 1940 during World War II, in the legendary Battle of Britain, a British pilot was tragically blinded when shattered fragments of his cockpit canopy were embedded in his eyes. This tragic event led to the identification of an implant material and eventuated in Ridley’s accomplishing a complete cure for cataracts. Ridley focused the next decade of his life on the development of an artificial lens to be implanted following the removal of a cataract. This device has restored vision to nearly 200 million people worldwide, and presently 9 million annually.

After performing the first IOL implant on a cataract patient, Sir Harold Ridley was met with opposition from the medical community. It took three decades of struggle until his goal became reality. Now the cataract surgery, and its cousin, refractive surgery, including the procedure LASIK, are the most common surgical procedures performed today.

Paving the way for past, current and future ophthalmologists, Sir Harold Ridley not only implanted the first medical device into a patient-he pioneered multiple once in a lifetime discoveries including innovations on river blindness, techniques for optic nerve and retina diagnosis, introduction of television and other electronic techniques to ophthalmology, as well as establishing a branch of biomedical engineering focusing on the science of artificial implants.

Know so many people who have had the implants – didn’t know who discovered them – or when.

yesterday was sandals (after my walking shoes), this morning I wore a sweatshirt & gloves, it’s 48, which feels really cold because I wore sandals yesterday.

I did it again – walked for 37 minutes this morning! Tomorrow it’s supposed to rain, but I can just cut out the roof part (I’m walking up & down the parking garage) I can still walk. I actually slept the night through – well, till 4:47 anyway. And Rise Up was playing in my head when I woke up.

Allergies are kicking in – damned mountain cedar pollen. Even on benadryl, I’m sneezy & drippy. Ugh.

Playing Spanish Eyes (the last song that was playing in the car) deliberately in my head to wake me up.

    I am getting so tired of overcast!  And as to what it does to my electricity production – well, while it is still possible to generate 100 KWHs for the month, it would require 12 solid days of sunshine with 5 KWHs a day which it doesn’t look like I’m going to get.  Currently I’m averaging less than half that – and part of that average is the 2 days so far this month that actually did get 5 KWHs.  Sigh.  Counting down to Solstice.  Really counting down to Solstice.  {{{HUGS}}}

Yesterday was a quiet day….just wrapped a few presents, made one outdoor arrangement, and rested my aching knees. So I’ve got a longer list today and a big pile of holly (thanks to a generous neighbor) that’s tempting me. A burgundy pot,  branches from a pine tree with lots of cones, ivy in bloom, and the holly…..I can see it now!

Bristol Bay. Am in tears. This is just monumental. This is his legacy.

President Barack Obama announced Tuesday that he’s removing more than 52,000 square miles of waters off Alaska’s coast from consideration for oil and gas exploration or drilling.

The president said in a video announcement that Bristol Bay and nearby waters, covering an area roughly the size of Florida, would be withdrawn from consideration for petroleum leases. He called Bristol Bay one of the country’s great natural resources and a massive economic engine.

“It’s something that’s too precious for us to be putting out to the highest bidder,” Obama said.

Bristol Bay has supported Native Americans in the Alaska region for centuries, he said.

“It supports about $2 billion in the commercial fishing industry,” Obama said. “It supplies America with 40 percent of its wild-caught seafood.”

  19. It is 24 degrees in Madison on its way up to 28. Sunny skies in the forecast. The cold front moved in late yesterday morning much to the surprise of my dog and me. When we went out for our late morning walk, it was cold and blustery. 20s now for the foreseeable future.

I opened my news feed and found JEB. Yikes! You would have thought that after the revelations of more criminality from the Bush administration (and Bush patriarch) that the time might not be right to tap into people’s nostalgia for the Bush years. But introspection is not a Bush trait. Jeb starts out with the old money guys locked up and Karl Rove. It will be interesting to see if the GOP has another old money Rovian nomination cycle left in them or if 2016 is the year that the crazee breaks through the carefully constructed firewall and burns down the GOP.

    See all y’alls later!!

WASHINGTON — If there’s one thing from 2014 that will define President Barack Obama’s legacy after he’s left the White House, it’s the number of lifetime judges he put on the federal bench.

In its final act of the year, the Senate blew through a dozen U.S. district court nominees on Tuesday night. That puts Obama at a whopping 89 district court and circuit court confirmations for the year, and means he’ll wrap up his sixth year in office with a grand total of 305 district court and circuit court confirmations — a tally that puts him well beyond where his predecessors were by this point in their presidencies.

night’s fog, and the streets drying off, going up to 47 F.

FINALLY managed to create my Xmas newsletter, swearing all the while. Why does Apple Pages make everything so difficult? In Microsoft Word, all I had to do was click on “Insert” in the function bar, and then “image.” With Apple Pages, it’s a whole lot more convoluted but I finally managed it.

Now I’m trying to remember, after exporting the newsletter to Word, whether I should attach it as a Word file or copy and paste the whole shebang into an email. Think I’ll choose the first option.

Was in too much of a rush yesterday to check in, but today may be calmer. The news is so sickening I could barf. The massacre in Pakistan blew what was left of  my mind.

Spending less and less time on Orange these days because of being (a) too busy, and (b) preferring to concentrate on getting this book out.

Hope everyone will have a good day and that the sun will shine on bfitz’ solar panels!

    and it isn’t raining yet

WooHoo! 3rd day in a row to walk before work. Now eating breakfast & drinking tea.

Runoff results are a mixed bag. I wish the mayorial race had been closer, but both were progressives, so that’s ok. The crazy Alex Jones fan lost big (30-something percent) but it worries me that she even got that much. The 2 progressives in my ‘hood ran civilized campaigns, & my friend Leslie beat my other friend Jeb. The siblings who ran against each other – well, Christmas is going to be awkward there, it got bitter. The head of the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce lost – and to a whack job. And there’s one other teabagger, too. And there’s a 3rd Republican. But they’re only 3, and we have 10 councilmembers plus the mayor. so they won’t be able to do too much harm. I hope.

Playing California in my head. I really should start listening to Christmas music.

    I’m getting really tired of overcast.  Sigh.  More and more “has to be done before we shut down” stuff is getting piled on.  Wish they’d thought of that more than one week before we shut down.  Oh well.  Although I have little hope for anything good being accomplished over the next two years at the federal, state, or local level – blocking the nastiest of crap is the best I can see from here – nor all that much in the race/gender/income situations, nor the international situations – I am hopeful for my department.  The newly-appointed assistant Chair, while moving carefully, is already starting to make a difference in the department.  (We don’t have a 100% on her being appointed as Chair when the current guy leaves end of June but there’s really nobody else right now.)  We’re working on long-needed updates in the catalog (which will stop a whole lot of manual entries once those updates are in) and also on balancing staff between the two halves of the department – and balancing upper division class offerings between the two halves of the department.  And the Lodger will be leaving end of May at the latest.  There is hope for 2015.  {{{HUGS}}}

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is finding just the right book to give as a gift. So yesterday’s trip to my local bookstore was really fun…..a book about Haida art for RonK, The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson for Ryan, the first three books in The Fairyland Series by Catherynne Valente for Emma, and a beautifully illustrated edition of The Frog and Toad stories for Ava.

I used to give everyone in the family a Christmas book but that got to be to much, so now I just make sure to give each of the grand kids books and to the adults only if I see one that I know they will love.

  26. It is 17 degrees in Madison with an expected high of 29. Partly cloudy skies later in the day.

Big news day yesterday! Cuomo orders fracking ban, first moves towards normalization of diplomatic ties with Cuba (although the embargo can’t be lifted without Congressional approval), and Jeb(!)mentum elicits more yawns than yays (and quite a bit of scorn).

but I wouldn’t call it “cold” — and were supposed to be in the 70s next week

Happy Friday Eve! 4th day in a row of walking before work. Just 35 minutes today, I was running a little behind. I started using the Map My Walk for these, because it posts my walk to my Facebook page, which gives me an excuse to post my donation link. If you see it, would you please “like” it so it’ll maybe get more views?

And even though I have listened to other music, I still have last night’s earworm of REM’s Gardening at Night in my head. Which is fine, they were brilliant even way back then.

Allergies are killing me. Stupid cedar trees. Must eat more breakfast so I can drink my tea without pissing off my stomach.

Busy day – folks are realizing that this is it.  As of Tuesday 12/23 at 4:30 pip emma this office will be closed until Monday 1/5/2015.  So end of month and end of calendar year reports are being requested from numerous folks.

Tonight is my last Quorum Court meeting.  End of an era sort of – I’ve been on the Court for 6 years.  I wish I could have been more effective.  The best I’ve been able to do most of the time for the last 2 years is make sure the facts were entered in the record (in the official minutes and also recorded for the Government Channel local TV) – what I was saying was ignored by the rest of the Court and any motion I proposed based on those facts went down usually 5-10 (the last one 3-12).  But I still feel like I’m deserting the County Employees and the County residents they serve (and would be able to serve better if fully funded).  I hope my successor can do a better job.  Younger, male, and higher in the Party echelon – he may, if he wishes.  Of course he may not be able to or he may not wish to.  What people tell you when they don’t want to be primaried and what they do when they get elected are not always the same thing.  So hope is all I have left on that front.  Which is more than I have on the state and federal level, so I guess that’s a win.

    Gotta get to work.  {{{HUGS}}}

My days are feeling all the same…..Christmas errands, wrap and deliver some gifts, rest my knees, eat dinner and go to bed. Tis the season!

Fortunately I’m also reading a very good book, The Long Way Home by Louise Penny, because I keep waking up in the middle of the night and unlike Jan, I’m not productive then. So I read my self back to sleep. This is the 10th book in her Inspector Gamache series, and the refrain she weaves through the story, “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole. There’s a power enough in heaven to cure a sin-sick soul” gives the words a thoughtful weight.

Is your retirement effective Jan. 1 of 2015?

In one way, parting from a familiar, if maddening, workplace brings a sense of loss.

But this is vastly outweighed by the benefits to one’s nerves, which were reduced to tiny, quivering shreds.  Your digestion, sense of peacefulness, and sleep will all improve without the daily irritants of Those People in That Place.

At least, that’s the way it worked for me. The only thing I really missed was Instant Messaging. At first. EIght years now and every day is a day in paradise, as far as I’m concerned. 🙂

Hope it is for you too!

From what I understand, the president will be holding a year-end presser today. I suspect that the “journalists” who harangued him about a month ago after the mid-term election will be a little more subdued. They wanted him to buy into the meme that losing the Senate reflected something other than that the majority of Republican voters don’t like the president.

President Obama brushed it off and spent the last month delivering on his explicit promises and the implicit promise that his presidency would indeed be transformational.

Thanks to the damn boot Ron fell on the front porch yesterday and tore ligaments in his wrist. So he is in a sling and so woozy from pain meds he can’t function. With my main elf out of commission (no lifting, driving, shopping, or cooking) I’m feeling just a bit overwhelmed this morning.

Looks like I’ll be simplifying Christmas cooking plans for next week, and today we’ll just enjoy our main meal at the bookstore cafe. I can do basic grocery shopping but my BCH leg swells if I do too much so I have to be careful. Can’t shut down Santa’s infirmary workshop completely!

  37. It is 26 degrees in Madison WI on its way up to 32. Clouds this morning, sun this afternoon.

That Obama!! Only calling on women reporters in his presser. Ha! Maybe it’s a way to get questions other than ones that are guaranteed to start out with an insult or with inserted Republican talking points (“After the American people rebuffed you and your policies in the midterm …”). Fox “News”‘s Ed Henry complained that the women don’t ask “pressing questions” like “Why do you hate America?”. Meh.

think of making this place looks like there is a holiday round the corner. Think I will get some evergreeny stuff, some red berry stuff and some white lilies and shove them in an old tin bucket and plop them on the table and get some red tulips and plop them on a side table amidst my kachinas and candles. Then make lists. Then more lists. Already listening to the Bach Christmas Oratorio. But other things first. Hope it’s a good day for all creatures on our planet. Ha, not sure what I originally wrote for “creatures” but spell check changed it into “curvatures.” Changed it back but want to be sure you all know that I also wish good things for all curvatures.

Ron’s feeling well enough to be restless today, but he still can’t move his arm without severe pain. I’m relieved to see less swelling and a little improvement. He still needs pain meds though, so no driving with an errand list for him today.
