Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: Sunday, July 13 thru Wednesday, July 16

Welcome to The Moose Pond, where seldom is heard a discouraging word … wait … that’s The Range. Sometimes a discouraging word is heard at the pond but it is mostly words about the weather. 🙂

Week ending Welcomings are here: Weekending Welcomings from Moosylvania: Thursday, July 17 thru Saturday, July 19

The Weeklong Welcomings feature provides the meese, new and old, a place to visit and share our words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit. In lieu of daily check-ins, which went on hiatus, a weekly welcomings diary will be posted every Sunday morning. To find the diary, just bookmark this link.

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining or bragging about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or just checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

Glad to see local protests are happening against Hobby Lobby

This one is in Williamsville, N.Y.

Though I am post-punk – as a New Yorker who lived around the corner from CBGB’s and knew some of the band members in their Lou Reid day’s I say RIP to Tommy Ramone.

The temp reached 82* yesterday which is very warm for the PNW. The sunset was beautiful though and after the house cooled off I slept for 9 hrs!

It’s just me and Maggie now and she goes home today. Funny how perspective changes…..Maggie (a poodle/papillon mix) seemed like a small dog until Penny (a Shitzu) was here. Of course compared to Heide (a black lab) both of them are petite. The dogs had a great week eating each others food, chasing each other around, trading toys, and vying for my attention. I’ve got a lot of de dogging to do!

  3. It is 59 degrees here with an expected high of 70. I have an incredibly busy day that involves lots of little car trips and some tap dancing related to project deadlines.

Today, the coffee will need to be strong:

A quick scan of the news suggests that we need better news.

    See you later!

we have yet another flash flood watch.

I have doctor and dentist appointments today – and then more packing/prep to leave for Detroit on Wednesday.

    storms to brighten the day.

Read an article on Mexican immigrants that I found fascinating. It seems that some, who are now living in New York, do not speak Spanish. They speak various indigenous languages, principally Mixtec, They are now living in a very  big NYC Latino neighborhood where all the stores have Spanish signs and everyone in the stores and on the streets speaks Spanish and some English but the Mexicans Indians can’t talk to anybody.  They know neither language. They are linguistically isolated and fearful of going anywhere. Can’t imagine the courage or desperation it took for them to get here. First they have to find a way learn Spanish. Learning English as well may be too difficult.

Am about to have coffee and check the news. The news has not been good lately.

Hope it’s a good day for all residents of Moosylvania.

With another 80* afternoon predicted…..that’s warm for the PNW. Fortunately my sons helped me set the hoses and sprinklers in place yesterday so I can just turn them on. I was surprised to find doing so my self was too difficult this summer. Ron will be home from his fishing trip tomorrow afternoon so hose wrangling will be all his to do!

I read skimmed  the newspaper outside last evening so I’m easing back into the news.

It’s probably about 75 F. right now here in NoVa, with a pale blue sky filmed with milky white cloud. We’re expecting ba-a-ad thunderstorms later today–thank goodness outdoor camp ends at 1 p.m. this week.

Gosh, how I’ve missed the morning check-in and hearing from everyone! Jan, hope you enjoy your week without air conditioning–your cool weather is headed our way on Wednesday. Denise, hope you have a wonderful time at Netroots Nation–wish I could be there to hear you speak. Princesspat, glad you’re better and thinking about Another Dog, and Portlaw, hope the news doesn’t get you down.

Just read something interesting on my Facebook feed about Monsanto’s Roundup product causing kidney disease, kidney failure, and death in Sri Lanka and El Salvador. If the link is proven, perhaps it will be the end of Monsanto!

Yesterday’s business section mentioned that Google is thinking of instituting a four-day work week. That should have been done long ago, universally in this country. With all this improved productivity, the workers should get some benefit from their increased productivity–more time to spend with their families. Workers certainly don’t get raises–oh, no, that would mean the CEO would have a million or two missing from his paycheck!

Spent Saturday at a writing workshop run by one of my long-time friends. She has a wonderful old house in Leesburg, Virginia, just down the road. It was fun hanging out with other writers! They were all women, which fact I like–don’t feel I have to self-censor when it’s an all-woman group.

Also, this weekend I got in some Nanny-Granny training. My  grandson is quite a jolly little chap for someone who’s only six weeks old! He seems to want to stand up and speak. He makes soft cooing sounds which I make right back at him, and a delighted smile spreads across his little face.

OK, I PROMISE to shut up now! Have a good week, all!

  8. bfitzinAR

but we’ve got a front coming through.  Rest of the week should be in the upper 70s during the day and upper 50s at night.  Good thing as my HVAC ducts are being replaced this week and the A/C will be off Wed & Thur at least and maybe Fri as well.  Once that’s done I can stop breathing old insulation fibers which I’m hoping will help the sinusitis.  Hope everyone in Moosylvania has a wonderful week and I’ll check back when I can.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

Monday in a call center. Less busy than Monday after a holiday weekend in a call center, but that’s saying very little.

Made an interesting lunch – zucchini & avocado with lemon & avocado oil dressing & pistachios. Hope it’s good.

I’ve really, really got to exercise. Yes, I still haven’t. Bad me.

  10. Diana in NoVa

Hope lunch was tasty. Do you go to a gym or exercise outdoors? I haven’t been near a gym since January 1st! Still paying the membership fee every month, though.

I know it’s too hot to walk during the day in Austin. My daughter who lives in Austin walks at night. That makes me terribly nervous but she feels safe with her can of Mace.

  11. 55 degrees here on its way up to 69. Evening showers.

Bring on the fall … I love this weather.

Here is something I don’t love, this statement by Dick “Dick” Cheney: “Hispanics should be conservatives because they are religious and hard-working”. Let’s see, there is another race that is pretty religious but Cheney and his ilk say they are just “lazy inner city men”. Might explain why racial minorities are not Republicans: when you fly your racist flag, and proudly, you are not creating a welcoming environment for people of color. Plus you can’t erase the optics of Armed White People (the Republican base) massing at the border for a chance to “shoot them some brown people!”. Give it up, Cheney. Your party’s words of inclusiveness are drowned out every day by your actions of racism and hatred. And guess what? A closer reading of the bible shows that religious values such as caring for the sick and sheltering the homeless and feeding the hungry, have no place in your Republican Party.

Plus … get out of my news feed!! Don’t you have puppies to kick somewhere??

    See you later, all y’alls!!

  12. Portlaw

Mooslyvania with thunder storms on the way. Yesterday we had thunder in honor of Bastille Day. Looks as though the celebration will continue for several days!.

Started to check the news but was too depressed to go on.

Maybe coffee will help.  Will check in later when am more focused to see how everyone, Mooslyvania, the nation, and the world are doing.  After typing that I remembered a childhood thing.  Did any of you, or your kids, ever write your name, street, city, county, state, nation, the earth, the Milky Way as an address?

73, up to 81 with rain and flash flood watch again today here in the Catskills of NY.

On my 3rd cuppa java…keyboard pounding…have pre-leave for Netroots Nation deadlines to meet.

Trip to dentist yesterday fixed my denture problem for the moment, and my doc checkup was good – blood pressure fine, a slight change needed in my thyroid meds…but all is basically well.

Roof is leaking in the barn/studio in one spot – have to find someone to do a patch job …cannot afford a new roof.

Torrential rains and wind have taken their toll on the shingles that cover the tin roof.

Still haven’t finished my packing for the trip to NN tomorrow – keep dithering about warmer clothing – I hate being cold and convention center rooms are always over air-conditioned for me, as are restaurants.

Looks like Detroit weather will be low 70’s for the week, and high 50’s low 60’s in the evening – which is probably great news for those who suffer from heat.

  14. bfitzinAR

Blessings on C.C. or Whoever for the cool spell – my A/C will be off until Friday (duct work) and I’ll still be able to sleep at night 🙂  One of my professors just informed me she won’t be teaching this fall – and both her classes are full.  I don’t know what the problem is but she’s applying for FMLA – she’ll tell me if she feels like it – I just told her how much sick leave she’s got (and then told the person who’s going to have to get those classes covered to remember the G.A. who assisted said professor for the last 2 years).

I’m not getting any more comfortable with the woman who’s renting a room from me.  Apparently she thinks “kitchen privileges” means “take over the kitchen” – and for a person who is going back to school to get a PhD in sustainability, she leaves a hell of a lot of lights on!  I’m giving it until school actually starts and we have a set schedule to see if I can deal with this for the supposedly 2 years it will take for her to get that PhD.

Hope it’s a beautiful day in the Moosylvania neighborhood and I’ll check back if I can.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

A/C guy is here – just routine maintenance. Chimney guy came. Cable guy at 11. Then I’ll go in to work. But at least all the maintenance stuff will be done, and I’ll be able to see the Tour de France. Though I missed the high drama days of Froome’s & Contador’s abandoning. Wish I could have seen Contador’s crash. Pisses me off that he doped & he’s still in, unlike others.  It was the hormone -laden meat, yeah sure.

Emma (my soon to be 12 yr old grand girl) needs to earn $1800.00 by next June for a trip to Wa DC, organized by one of her social studies teachers. I’m pleased with and want to encourage her growing awareness of political and social issues, and I want her to accomplish meeting the financial goal.

So yesterday was a good start. She was here for 4 hrs helping me change the guest beds, doing the laundry from sort to fold (and carry up and down the stairs), water the plants, and dust as many upstairs rooms as we could. It was hard for me to let her see how tired I am and how hard it is to walk right now, but she was very understanding and not upset so we worked well together and kept an easy conversation going. She’ll be back on Thursday with Ava so we’ll have another work time and then some summer fun.

We also set up a folder with monthly calendars, an envelope for her earnings, and a chart showing how much she needs to earn each month/week to meet her goal. It was fun to see her excitement grow as she realized it’s doable 🙂

I’m glad Ron comes home today though….the garden needs him. The heavy hoses just tip me over this year!

  17. Diana in NoVa

And, whoops, it’s just started raining here in NoVa. Temp is about 85 F. at the moment. Legend says that if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day it will rain for 40 days.

Heard on the radio that the North Pole is not very stable–guess why–and that the more unstable it gets, the weirder the weather becomes. For example, the rest of the week will be very nice, almost like late spring for temperatures and humidity, but if this were winter, it would be terrible.

In other news, how about this?  A 3-D printer that prints FOOD? I’d already heard of 3-D printers that print weapon parts (ugh), shoes (they’re ugly), and prefab building parts. But check this out!

I know someone who’s been writing science fiction since the early 1990s. Everything Mel Keegan visualized is coming true–drones that perform different tasks, “autochefs,” which are machines that produce what you want to eat when you select from the menu they offer, esoteric spaceship features like Weimann generators and so on. It’s amusing to see it all coming true.

Hope everyone will have a good day in Moosylvania! I’m hoping for a nap in a little while. Had an awful night. Another thing I hope for is to finish “House of Blue,” my current short story.

Will check in tomorrow–so happy and grateful to see the Moose Pond check-in back! And thanks to the regular who sent me a message about it, appreciate that very much. 🙂

  18. Except on the left coast where it is still Tuesday.

53 sleepless degrees here on its way up to 73 degrees. No rain in the forecast.

I really do need someone to explain to me why honoring the battle flag of traitors is a first amendment right? THIS!!

John McConnell, an attorney for the Sons of Confederate Veterans said the ruling confirms that “the government cannot step into an issue and silence one side while endorsing the viewpoint of the other side,”

The other side?? THE OTHER SIDE??? Your side lost a war of sedition, a rebellion against the United States government.

It is not unexpected from the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the worst in the country. I hope this ruling is appealed to the Supreme Court. Someone needs to put a stop to the sanctioned glorification of a war fought to enslave a population. One in which 37% of Mississippi Republicans would back the Confederates if it were waged today. I wish we could deliver history intravenously because the traditional method, via education, does not seem to be working.

Dee, if I miss your greetings/farewells, please have a safe and uneventful trip to Detroit. Report back!

  19. DeniseVelez

58 going up to 75 in Detroit – rain. The rest of the week seems to be sunny – not that I’ll be outside much.

  20. From Smartypants (Nancy LeTourneau):

Appropriate in light of the current xenophobia sweeping our country. This ground on my last nerve (from Maryland, of all places):

The right-wing is already pre-invalidating the next election which they will claim was stolen by the children who came across the border this past year. Because 57,000 kids, most of whom will still be under 18 in 2016 should they even still be in the country, will surely tip the election. No. What will tip the election will be your harshing on the brown people and angering people of good will who don’t think it is okay to treat human beings this way.

  21. Portlaw

afraid to check in for fear that this comment might reach the 100 limit and I will break the Moose and everyone, including me, will be devastated.

Dee, have a wonderful time and a safe flight. Glad you are bringing your bracelets!  Thanks for the live stream link!

Jan, loved the Navajo story. It reminded me of one of the times I was in the hospital many years ago. I was sharing a room with a Chinese woman who did not speak English. A nurse came in, realized the woman didn’t speak English and started to speak to her in bad Spanish. When my roommate didn’t respond, she started to yell at her, in Spanish. I pointed out that the woman was Chinese and the nurse, sighing, said that she knew that, that’s why she was talking to her in Spanish. Did I think she was dumb?  I gave up. Hey, if you don’t speak English, you have to speak Spanish!!  Of course, these days, even my ATM knows better. It has choices in six languages. Not enough for some, but …

Heading for early morning acupuncture and more coffee.

I just glanced at Huffington Post and the news was of such suffering in many parts of the world that I clicked off and immediately came to Mooslyvania. Hope it’s a good day for all!

  22. anotherdemocrat

day in between rainy days, so — steambake oven

Eating breakfast & drinking tea. I have a headache, hope it’s because I never drank my tea yesterday.

Got this Charles Pierce piece open in another tab: http://www.esquire.com/blogs/p

If I was awake, I’d probably be laughing my head off.

Scrolling through U2 songs in my head to get the local news’ theme song out of my head. Settling on Love & Peace (or else), seems appropriate for the day’s news.

Wish I was more technical. Time Warner gave me a possible solution for my tv problem but I can’t figure out how to do it. Going to ask Best Buy if they know the model of my tv, then search for an online manual. I clicked on everything that seemed like it should be for the “resolution”, but couldn’t find it. Sigh.

  23. bfitzinAR

heading for low 70s.  At this very moment (8:57 CDT) the crew should be starting to pull my HVAC ductwork out (and hauling it off).  Tomorrow they are scheduled to be installing the new ductwork.  Since it’s under the house, hopefully tomorrow’s expected rain won’t slow them down. C.C. gave us this fine window of cool weather covering the time my A/C needs to be off – it would be flying in the face of Providence to not finish before the window closes. 🙂  Tramashings at work as has become damned near normal around here.  We shall see what we shall see.  Happy Hump Day to those in Moosylvania.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

  24. princesspat

RonK is safely home with lots of fish for the freezer and happy day, the hoses are now his to wrangle!

Per usual my part of the left coast is slow and sleepy so I’ll ease in to the day, go to the pool, and then see what happens next.

    Have a great day everyone!
