Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

  1. I am not a fan of hot sauce (I feel that destroying the nerve endings in your tongue is not conducive to “taste”) but this article on Sriracha was entertaining. The video talks about the chemistry.

Sriracha has five main ingredients: jalapeno peppers, vinegar, garlic powder, salt and sugar. (There’s also a few preservatives thrown in there.) But it’s the first ingredient that wields the molecular magic.

These molecules perform a mind trick on our nervous system: They make us think our tongues have touched something scalding hot, like boiling water.

To keep the tongue from getting burned, the brain triggers the sensation of pain. Something like, “Holy cow! Wash this Sriracha out of my mouth immediately!”

But your nervous system isn’t going to just let you suffer with your mouth on fire. So it also launches a whole series of actions to help us deal with the pain. It releases endorphins – the morphine-like compounds that give you a natural high. And it makes the nerves on our tongue more tolerant to pain.

In other words, spicy peppers may hurt at first, but then they have an analgesic effect.

I have seen hot peppers cause blisters to form on people’s lips so the heat is real. But maybe the endorphins make it worthwhile?

degree NY. I checked on the herd last night and was sorry to see that some were suffering from health or weather issues. Hope today is a good one for all meese.

Another night completely lacking in sleep. Sigh. And it is really warm & muggy today – capris & sandals weather. Tomorrow, our high won’t get out of the 40s. Sigh.

So the weather is nuts, but mostly it’s the exhaustion. It took over an hour for me to get to sleep last night, then I still woke up over & over — on the 4 hours sleep I had the night before; 3 hours & some minutes last night. What the hell?? So, I once again have super-strong tea, which I will finish by 10, and no caffeine past that time. I’m wide awake at 11 pm, but after work, prime exercise time, I’m so tired I can barely get myself home safely. This has really got to stop.

It’s slushy outside…..I stepped in what looked like snow yesterday and got a boot full of the cold water running underneath.

My bent over Camilla is more upright this morning though, so that’s the good news from my part of the world 🙂

    the chances are about 1-in-10 and the sun is shining right now.  Need to dog the faculty for next semesters (May Intersession, Summer, August Intersession, and Fall) textbook requests this week.  State law that the textbooks for each class must be on the bookstores’ websites before Priority Registration (as if people choose their classes based on the textbooks, snort) which is the 1st week of April.  Also February leave starting Friday.  Meanwhile the faculty is trying to shove a full semester into a time period that’s a full week short due to all the snow days we’ve had this year AND deal with mid-term grade reports.  It’s a wonder they don’t run when they see me coming.  I’ve also got travel claims for multiple faculty to process (2 big conferences last week) and to check on the ads for the current non-tenure faculty search so I guess I’d best get to it.  Have a pleasant day – good friends, good food, good health.  {{{HUGS}}}

And–it’s sticking to the ground and the roofs and the tops of cars, too! This was supposed to be “flurries” and said flurries are supposed to move out of here by early afternoon.  So far it’s been snowing merrily for an hour and we might even get an inch before it’s all over. More of the same tomorrow morning, or so the forecasters allege.

This has been the snowiest winter in four years! Suppose we had to have one some time.

This morning:  attend to some personal issues, then make a phone call, do some laundry, and answer the correspondence I didn’t answer yesterday. Work on the college granddaughter’s short story is coming along very well and is so much fun to write! It’s about the Wendy Davis for governor campaign. Temporarily stumped on the Ostara story but will keep doing research.

Everyone have a good day and may Isis strengthen the ailing.
