Tuesday Morning Herd Check-in

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, … or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Tourists who clog Time’s Square each year are in for a really cold night tonight.

My husband works on 42nd street so he is going to leave early to avoid the mobs who will be heading to the festivities.

As a native New Yorker I admit that I would never ever have gone to see the ball drop – was much more comfortable to watch it on tv, and enjoy the show hosted (in the past) by Dick Clark.

So here’s a  blast from the past

“What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is a popular song written in 1947 by Frank Loesser as an independent song-not written for a particular movie or musical. It first charted for The Orioles, peaking at No. 9 on Billboard’s Best-Selling Retail Rhythm & Blues chart in December 1949. Other charted versions include Danté & The Evergreens (No. 107 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles in December 1960) and Nancy Wilson (No. 17 on Billboard’s Christmas Singles chart in December 1965 and No. 24 on the same chart in December 1967).

It has been recorded by many other artists, including Margaret Whiting in 1947, Dick Haymes & the Les Paul Trio in 1947, Ella Fitzgerald in 1960 for her Verve release Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas, Ramsey Lewis in 1961, King Curtis in 1968, Johnny Mathis in 1969, The Carpenters in 1984, Patti LaBelle in 1990, The Stylistics in 1992, Harry Connick, Jr. in 1993, Donny Osmond in 1999, Barbra Streisand in 2001, Barry Manilow in 2002, Diana Krall in 2005, Bette Midler in 2006, and Chicago in 2011. In 2012, Rod Stewart recorded the song as a “virtual duet” with Ella Fitzgerald for his first holiday album, Merry Christmas, Baby. The Head and the Heart recorded the song for Starbucks’ Holidays Rule compilation album in 2012.

Though I guess our definition of “cold” is different. Mid 30s is cold to me. Of course, our definition of “hot” is also different, I’d still do outdoor exercise in 100+ degrees.

1/2 day at work today. Will probably still take as many calls as we normally do in a regular day, if yesterday is anything to go by. For now, I’m eating my healthy veggies & quinoa breakfast & drinking tea.

  3. Power From The People: Human Energy Will Fuel NYC’s New Year’s Eve Ball Drop

A 11,875-pound geodesic sphere, covered in 2,688 Waterford crystals, illuminated by 32,256 LED bulbs, powered completely by human energy.

That is what the venerated Times Square New Years Eve ball will look like this year, according to a Friday press release from the Times Square Alliance. The human energy will come from six stationary Citi Bike bicycles set up in Midtown, that people were invited to ride this weekend to generate kinetic energy for the ball.

The energy, which is collected from the bikes and stored in batteries, will eventually be transferred to the New York City power grid to offset the energy needed to light and eventually drop the New Year’s Eve Ball, according to the release.

Not only Sonia Sotomayor powered but people powered!

p.s. To those who say that Justice Sotomayor is undignified for being part of this celebration, I say “pffffffft”. I want justices who have beating hearts and whose smiles come from their human souls, not as evil grins anticipating the damage that their rulings will do. I want this person:

I always resolve to lose weight & exercise more. And this year, with that decade-changing birthday in less than 2 weeks, I’m definitely going to work on that. I want to do something really big this year, don’t know what yet, but something.

I like the idea of making a gratitude list instead of resolutions. 2014 will bring me a new grandchild, and I’m very grateful for that!

  6. Diana in NoVa

Daughter-in-law is expecting at the end of May or early June.

I’d love to finish writing that Roman Britain novel. And publish an e-book of short stories. Oh, and write more short stories!

It’s 35 F. here, brilliantly sunny. Dearly and I are going shopping in a little while, then he’s going to pick up Miss Pink Cheeks. We’ll make brownies this afternoon.

Just picked up the annual honey-baked ham. We eat it with black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for luck. Forgot to get any cornbread, though, will have to pick that up later today. We also love bean soup made with a mix of different beans and the hambone.

I’m still reeling from the news that young dolphins chew on a pufferfish to get high with other young dolphins!  Apparently they pass the fish around between. Holy fugu!

    Happy New Year, everyone!

I slept long and late this morning….a good way to end what has been a challenging year.

Thinking of gratitude and new babies to love is a great start to the day.

    Thanks everyone!
