RIP singer Richie Havens, age 72

From Billboard magazine:

Richie Havens, a veteran folk singer and a star of the Woodstock festival and film, died this morning at his home from a sudden heart attack. He was 72.

A bit more after the jump ….

His chart history includes the following statistics:

* One Billboard Hot 100 single: “Here Comes the Sun,” No. 16 on May 22, 1971.

* 13 albums that charted on the Billboard 200 – one of them went top 40: 1971’s “Alarm Clock” (No. 29).

* His last chart entry was the 1987 album “Simple Things,” which reached No. 173 on the Billboard 200 chart.

He spent much of the next few decades touring throughout the world and increasing awareness of environmental issues. In 1993, he performed at President Bill Clinton’s inauguration.

My favorite performance of his: was this cover of the song Coming Back to Me by Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane. And below you can hear it.

Then later he was amazing at Woodstock.

He was still going strong years later.

He gave the world a gift.
