  1. Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now? Getting the house sold so that my younger brother can move out here.

Is there anybody that you envy? The Dahlia Lama. I wish I could be that serene.

What have you learned recently? My lawyer is a big jerk!

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach? Spinach salad with hot bacon and mustard dressing

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee? I practice austerity so I can afford chocolate and coffee. 😉

Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now? Warmer weather!

Is there anybody that you envy? Nope

What have you learned recently? You just taught me where the word “gerrymander” comes from

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach? any way you can fix it – like it raw in salad, but my favorite way to fix it is to stir-fy it in peanut oil with pignoli nuts

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee?
I clip coupons to save money, but have never cut back on either chocolate or coffee (essentials for me).  Austerity means giving up on take out. I rarely eat in restaurants.

    A few answers:

Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now? Yes, I am going to Hawaii and then to china in less than two weeks.

Is there anybody that you envy? Not really.

What have you learned recently? That my Facebook account was hacked yesterday. It happened on a day when I was away from the PC all day.

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach? Lots of ways–spinach salad, spinach pie…

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee? I have tried to cut back on the coffee. It’s not gonna happen.

  4. Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now?

Lots of things — warmer weather, getting the taxes done, finishing the quilt I’m working on, having all my kids and grandkids together in May, Son’s commissioning and entry into the Air Force, Jim retiring, our trip to Glacier NP and Banff in July… And all kinds of mundane every day things, too.

Is there anybody that you envy?

    no

    What have you learned recently?

    Invisible thread really isn’t.

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach?

    Most ways I’ve had it.

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee?

    Not really.

(RI) mid-60’s. And I was so surprised to see him because we had heard he had a heart attack and was in serious condition in a hospital in New York.

But he said he was ok and feeling much better, getting stronger.

In those years, at Newport Jazz Festival, everybody who wasn’t dead, in jail, in a hospital, or overseas, usually came to play at one of the 7 concerts spread over the 4 day July 4th weekend.

Moody was very gentle quiet soft spoken and loving and generous to speak unguardedly to me. I mighta been 17.

I told him how much he meant to us and how worried we had been about his health. He was real calm and confident and said the doctors told him he’d be fine. And they were right.

Musta been a Saturday afternoon I saw him. The 3 afternoon concerts; some called workshops – like a saxophone workshop, or for 5 vibes players in front of a rhythm section – were more informal than the fancy nightime shows.

Anyhow, and I met other cats, too, sometime I’ll tell, James Moody was violet flowers in a lush hush light breeze under smiling Sun. Just a delight I still have the luck to remember.

Special event:  well, moving is exciting but on my birthday in a month we are going to see Book of Mormon.  I am excited about that.

Envy:  I’m pretty happy with my life but I wish I could play the guitar, so I envy women that can play the guitar.

    Spinach:  leaves in a salad

Austerity:  all the time.  I believe in living simply except I always find room in the budget for wine.

Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now? The Hill Country Ride. It’ll be fun, and there will be hugs.

Is there anybody that you envy? anyone who is lean & fit – I’ve worked so hard for so long & I can’t seem to get there, I wish getting to fit was as easy & mindless as getting unfit was

What have you learned recently? recently, recently…..it is too early in the morning for me to think of something

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach? pretty much any (meat-free) way it is served, I love spinach

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee? I cook 80% of what I eat, how’s that for frugal?

  8. slksfca

I look forward to my next cup of coffee, which will be fresh and hotter than the one I’m drinking at the moment.

I envy anyone with the means to travel.

I have learned that even in late middle age, I heal quickly.

I like my spinach fresh in salad, with diced hardboiled eggs and creamy dressing.

I practice austerity all the time. It’s a way of life for those of us on fixed incomes.

Retirement!  But that’s not until the end of 2015.  In the immediate future, I don’t know.  Friday, maybe.

I imagine I envy certain people for certain specific reasons, but overall, I don’t want to be anybody else.

Oh, that’s a good question!  Seems to me I was saying, just the other day, “Wow, I didn’t know that!” about something… what was it?  Had something to do with science.  Maybe the news that the universe is lopsided.

    I like my spinach… a lot.

Austerity for the sake of saving money, or for the sake of being healthier?  Well, it doesn’t matter.  Answer is no.  Wellllll, I was thinking of cutting back on beer because my clothes are feeling tighter.

  11. mikidee

Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now? My new kitchen rug will be delivered today (I’m easy to please).

Is there anybody that you envy? Not really … but I wouldn’t mind being the person who just won that big lottery.

What have you learned recently?  That my dentist likes to clean my teeth – I have to be totally numbed up to get my teeth cleaned, which makes it easy for her to really have at it when she’s in my mouth.

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach? Every possible way except canned (too much salt).

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee? Yep, all the time, with pretty much everything, which is the only way I can occasionally afford treats. After a while it becomes just the way I live – it no longer feels like austerity.

    Excellent hover-craft today!

Why does libertarianism fear the workings of power & greed in government, but ignore the same vices in business?

    – Chris Dashiell

Our pal Dash has hit on the thing that I put another way:  Libertarians have no imagination.  The only thing in the world to fear is government.  To me, government is the thing that ought to help you when business has you by the balls.

Who would have thought a neologism that weird would stick?

Some joker had a vuvzela at a tennis match we were watching the other day.  Pleeeeease, no!

Next, it’ll be those drunks at the golf course yelling, “IN THE HOLE! (BLAAAAAAAT!)”

  16. princesspat

looking forward….. hair cut and color, today!

envy….those who can easily and strongly just walk

learned recently…..to be happier about just walking better

spinach…..lightly sauteed or just fresh in salad

austerity….my bland/blah diet gives new meaning to the word!

About the name “Swell Maps”:  Are they maps that are really swell, or are they maps of ocean swells (well, that’d be silly), or are they maps to the homes of the stars (and other swells)?

  19. cassandracarolina

Looking forward to? Moving to my Carolina home later this year, and spending some time there next month.

Anybody I envy? No, not really. Life is very good, and I sometimes cannot believe that it’s really my life. I’m amused that my stepson envies me and Mr. Carolina with our upcoming retirement. I remind him that it took a combined 87 years of full-time work between the two of us to get where we are today.

Learned recently? That I love doing advertising copywriting! I’ve been working occasionally for my stepson’s marketing company helping him delight his customers with fast turnaround of material that requires only minimal editing. Young people cannot write worth sh*t, so there’s infinite upside potential for those of us who can write to ghost-write material from now until we expire. It’s interesting work, and a lot of fun. I guess all those years of working under absurd client deadlines do pay off!

Spinach? Hated it as a kid because all my mom served was canned spinach or frozen spinach souffle. Now I love it sauteed with some garlic and butter, and in salads.

Austerity? Yes, I am becoming more frugal with every passing day, but still living very well in terms of food. I think of the past year or two as “training” for retirement and learning to live on less. Some things, though, I will NOT give up! Chocolate, for sure, and going out for breakfast and dinner at least once a week.

  20. Avilyn

    that Geraldine Ferraro died?

Oh, wait… I see.  A good friend of mine also died this day in 2011.  🙁   R.I.P Carole; you’re missed.

  21. Avilyn

Is there anything special you are looking forward to right now?  Getting together with some good friends in April that I haven’t seen in a while.

Is there anybody that you envy?  Specifically? Not really.   In general, I envy people who can easily stay fit and/or love to exercise.

What have you learned recently?  That it’s National Spinach Day 😉

It’s National Spinach Day, how do you like your spinach?  Raw, mixed in with other greens for salad.  Sometimes the frozen stuff added to soups.

Do you ever practice austerity in your own life, such as cutting back on chocolate or coffee?  OK, first, coffee is a necessity, and as such, is never cut back.  😉  Otherwise, yeah, sometimes; usually just means cutting down on spontaneous purchasing though.
