Libyan Open Thread: Here There Be Monsters

Well, one at least. Here’s some of what the whackadoodle had to say yesterday:

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, whose authority is teetering amid a popular uprising, said in an interview with a French newspaper on Sunday that an Islamic holy war would engulf the Mediterranean if the insurrection in Libya succeeded and that “we will go back to the time of Red Beard, of pirates, of Ottomans imposing ransoms on boats.”

Of course, this isn’t particularly surprising from an omnicidal dictator who fancies himself a Flemingesque mastermind. Red Beard? This from an asshat who takes fashion advice from Capt. Crunch.

Given the lack of credible coverage for the ongoing situation in Libya, it’s hard to know what’s happening with any degree of certainty. The best we can do is listen to voices like these:

Mohamed Revolutionary, Misrata:

Misrata is very tense. We buried 21 young men today – the casualties of yesterday’s battle.

We hear that Gaddafi’s forces are gathering to the west of the city so it’s quiet here but tense. Very tense.

Misrata is free of Gaddafi’s forces – totally free. I’m confident that we’ll do all we can to drive off and to fight the dictator’s forces.

[snip]

There is new territory gained – little villages and little towns having uprisings and shaking off the control of the dictator. We hear good news every day.

Now we hold an absolute territorial advantage and an absolute population advantage to the dictator. I would now say that 65-70% of Libya is out of control of the dictator. He’s only got Tripoli, Sirte and Sabha and he’s ruling from fear there.

Tripoli is being suffocated by the dictator. It is simmering underneath and hopefully it will blow up soon. We are gaining ground in all directions.

Salah Loyalist, Tripoli:

So far so good in Tripoli. People are starting to get the feeling of security back after the army and police were distributed all over the streets.

[snip]

It’s hard to know which cities are under the control of the regime or the opposition. News agencies on the ground are the ones who know what is happening, but it is very confusing, some say the supporters of Gaddafi are in control of cities outside the capital while other reporters suggest the opposition are.

What are you hearing? This is an open thread / news dump, so have at it.

Is turning into the Guernica of this conflict as we speak:

@LibyaInMe: Uncle’s friend in Zawiya: They are attacking everyone and everything…It’s a massacre unlike others 🙁 #libya #feb17

It is hard to credit the descriptions being relayed by those outside the city.

To aggregate information at the moment but it seems:

Az Zintan in South-western Libya has broken the siege on their city of ten days and forced loyalist forces to withdraw.  This may be significant as it would open up a new front which loyalists forces must deal with.

Az Zawiyah has been under attack from shelling and apparently ground attack aircraft.  Impossible to get information from within the city but those outside claim it has been extremely heavy:

@libyanexpat: Getting distress calls from people just outside zawiya saying the whole city has been destroyed. Ya Allah please protect our families #Libya

In Ras Lanuf it is still unclear where the front line is at the moment.  There have been numerous air strikes on Ras Lanuf including a car destroyed with three fatalities.  Situation fluid and little reporting at the moment:

There’s a lot of planning going on for the Ras Lanuf-to-Sirt front by revolutionaries, I can confirm that. Of course no details. #Libya

It would seem the desert campaign is headed to a tipping point.

May I, or will you? My diary currently on top is disjointed/disorganized/controversial enough that it makes me squirmy.

If FP’d I’ll be using it as a general open thread myself though. I am having trouble keeping up with the tremendous volume of news coming out of Libya, and it makes my head spin a bit.

Press conference in #Tripoli ended prematurely when #Libya FM refused to answer any more questions and walked out. #Libya

Given the increasingly credible reports that gunfire in Tripoli yesterday was an internal power struggle or attempted coup could be an indication that loyalists are throwing their last dice…  Hard to say.  Things have gone awfully quiet as far as previous internal sources from Libya via social media and telephone.  Almost a total blackout.

I walked a couple of blocks to the store; I needed cat food and toilet paper.  The landlord had plowed the driveway but the continued snow and wind still made that a trudge.  I went to turn onto the sidewalk only to be confronted by knee-deep snow as far up the walk as I could see.  We have sidewalk plows by they hadn’t come by yet and no one had shoveled.  I ended up joining a number of folks walking in the street.

Once I got downtown the sidewalks were pretty clear, except for the corners where all the plowed snow goes.  Saw several folks on cross country skis; I need to think about that for future use.  My knee, which has given me fits off and on for a couple of years, was not particularly happy especially when the other leg slipped.  Got a bit of a workout on the way back because you know I bought more than just cat food and toilet paper.

I also couldn’t file my unemployment claim because state offices are closed.

One official said it’s some of the worst conditions he’s seen in the 20 years he’s been on the job.  Welcome to Vermont in March!  And I still wouldn’t be anywhere else.

I guess you’ve heard that Mr. Huckabee made a splash last week by first saying that Obama grew up in Kenya and then made it worse by having a spokesperson come out and say the former Governor “misspoke” and meant Indonesia.  Of course, referencing the Mau Mau during the original comment makes Huckabee a two-time liar.

But George Will is sufficiently tired of the tripe and listed who he believes (hopes?) are the front-runners for the GOP nomination.  The usual suspects of Palin, Huckabee, and Gingrich aren’t on the list.  Barbour, Huntsman, Daniels, Romney and Pawlenty are.  Daniels, in addition to being really short and Arab American, refused categorically to sign any pledge not to ever raise taxes.  Barbour has a ton of issues; Huntsman has one major issue we all know of, and Romney is both Mormon and, as the administration likes to point out, signed healthcare reform much like “Obamacare.”  That leaves Pawlenty who according to Lawrence O’Donnell has no obvious disqualifiers (boring doesn’t count).  O’Donnell has mentioned T-Paw as a front-runner several times and tonight said that perhaps if he continues to do so Pawlenty will be so damaged one of the loonies will step in.

President Obama, appearing Monday morning with Australia’s prime minister, tried to raise the pressure on Colonel Qaddafi further by talking about “a range of potential options, including potential military options” against the embattled Libyan leader.

Despite Mr. Obama’s statement, interviews with military officials and other administration officials describe a number of risks, some tactical and others political, to American intervention in Libya.

Of most concern to the president himself, one high-level aide said, is the perception that the United States would once again be meddling in the Middle East, where it has overturned many a leader, including Saddam Hussein. Some critics of the United States in the region – as well as some leaders – have already claimed that a Western conspiracy is stoking the revolutions that have overtaken the Middle East.

“He keeps reminding us that the best revolutions are completely organic,” the senior official said, quoting the president.

    snip

But curiously, in a sign of the uncertainties about how the politics of an American intervention would play out, few of the potential nominees for the 2012 Republican presidential ticket have expressed a strong opinion.

Ivo H. Daalder, the U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, told reporters that the number of Libyan air force flights has been decreasing after a peak last week. And, he added, it is hard to suppress helicopter attacks using such a tactic.

“No-fly zones are more effective against fighters, but they really have a limited effect against … helicopters or the kind of ground operations that we’ve seen,” he said. “Which is why a no-fly zone, even if it were to be established, isn’t really going to impact what is happening there today.”

    However…

Reports in recent days from eastern Libya have suggested that air attacks by government forces played a substantial role in a counteroffensive that pushed back the badly armed and poorly organized rebel force. Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi’s forces launched airstrikes near an oil complex in Ras Lanuf, located near the front line. News reports said a town deep in rebel-held territory also was hit Monday.

With the United Nations estimating that the death toll in Libya has risen past 1,000, U.S. and allied officials are under increasing pressure to act. But Obama administration officials are deeply reluctant to use force, fearing open-ended involvement and a negative Arab reaction to another Western military incursion in the Middle East.

    snip

U.S. officials are giving top priority to efforts to persuade Kadafi’s lieutenants to give up the fight. U.S. and allied officials have been trying to send messages to generals and aides warning that they could face criminal charges if they remain loyal to him.

Also according to the article, the White House Press Secretary would neither confirm nor deny reports that the US had approached Saudi Arabia about arming the rebels.

Rebels will not pursue Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi over crimes they say he has committed if he steps down from his post in the next 72 hours, the head of the rebel National Libyan Council has told Al Jazeera.

“If he leaves Libya immediately, during 72 hours, and stops the bombardment, we as Libyans will step back from pursuing him for crimes,” Mustafa Abdel Jalil, head of the opposition National Council, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

He said the deadline would not be extended beyond 72 hours.

    snip

Libyan state television on Tuesday denied reports that the Libyan leader tried to strike a deal with opposition forces seeking his removal. An official from the Libyan foreign ministry described the reports as “absolute nonsense”.

However, a spokesman for the opposition National Council in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi confirmed that a representative had sought to negotiate Gaddafi’s exit.

Gaddafi was reported to have sent a representative to Benghazi on Sunday night to discuss a conditional plan to step down, Al Jazeera learned. The offer was provided on the condition that Gaddafi would be able to keep his assets and avoid prosecution.

    snip

The rebel forces say they will be outgunned if the government continues to unleash its air attacks on them and are pleading for the international community to impose a no-fly zone to prevent this.

“We don’t want a foreign military intervention, but we do want a no-fly zone,” rebel fighter Ali Suleiman told AP.

“We are all waiting for one,” he said. The rebels can take on “the rockets and the tanks, but not Gaddafi’s air force”

  19. Shaun Appleby

It appears that beyond air strikes that the Qaddafi counter stroke at Ras Lanuf has not materialised and in fact there are now unconfirmed reports that the revolutionaries are once again near Bin Jawad.  This is a vital front for the revolutionaries and it appears that foreign journalists have stepped back from this area for now.

As a well informed tweeter has pointed out there are a number of tactical options which may be considered to take or isolate Sirte though it is impossible to assess with information we are getting at the moment.  An audio report from the area late yesterday suggests that revolutionaries have organised themselves into two cohorts, one of which is composed of the more experienced and well equipped members of their forces, leaving the ‘volunteers’ to less critical operations.  This is an interesting development.

    At this kind of thing:

Perhaps in response to charges by insurgents that government forces were increasingly relying on mercenaries, Libyan foreign minister Moussa Koussa charged the United States and Britain Monday with playing “divide and conquer” with his country. If one was to believe Koussa, the Americans have released 300 Al Qaeda terrorists incarcerated at Guantánamo Bay to back the rebel forces fighting Muammar Qaddafi’s regime.

Although most sources were suggesting the rebellion in Zawiyah had been crushed, a resident named Ibrahim claimed combat was continuing.

The Gaddafi regime has cut all mobile and landline communications with the town and accounts of today’s fighting came from witnesses who had driven out of the combat area and one who had climbed on a roof to find a phone signal.

Residents described a hail of bullets, with women and children being killed and families trapped within their homes.

The violence of this assault marks a disturbing escalation in the developing civil war in Libya, suggesting that the regime has now decided to pursue a no-holds barred strategy to crush the rebellion, despite the growing threats of international action. http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl…

Reports from Az Zawiyah from earlier today:

(Reuters) – A fighter in Zawiyah said rebels had retaken the main square of the western city on Wednesday after pro-Gaddafi forces took control of it earlier in the day but later pulled back following a rebel counter-attack.

The fighter named Ibrahim told Reuters the government had brought in supporters of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for a rally there and they were now on the main road.

Earlier reports clearly stated the city had been retaken at heavy cost:

(Reuters) – Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi recaptured Zawiyah Wednesday after a fierce attack on the closest rebel-held city to the capital Tripoli, residents said.

Libyan state television showed footage of Gaddafi supporters waving flags in what it said was a celebratory march in Zawiyah and a rebel fighter told Reuters pro-Gaddafi forces had driven rebels from their stronghold in the central square.

A local doctor confirmed the report and said the death toll in the day’s fighting was at least 40 and probably many more.

“We have pulled back and they are inside the square but we will attack them again and have it back,” the rebel fighter said by telephone. “We will do that tonight. This is not the end.”

The doctor said many dead lay in the streets, including old people, women and children. Al Jazeera television said several members of Gaddafi’s forces were also killed, including a general and colonel.

and I do not see this as requiring a diary of its own:

I have been watching DK4’s Group activity for a couple weeks now.

From what I can tell, for the vast most part, they are just another way of getting material seen.

‘Special Rules’ cannot be made or enforced for each group…and, honestly, unless you have JUST ONE group filing into your Stream, or have clicked intentionally on a Group’s Page, I don’t think people really know where diaries first came from.

In the past couple of days I have gone thru the entire list of members here on the Moose and searched the usernames on Dkos to see who has cross accounts (now, having said that, I KNOW that there are many who use different names HERE than elsewhere…Happy and Stipes are two).

What I think I am going to do, based on watching what other respected Groups have done…is blast out a mass ‘invite’ to ‘join’ the Moose Group.

By accepting the ‘invite’, a member then becomes a ‘Contributer’…meaning they can flag/request that their diaries (or any diary they come across that they think fellow Moose would enjoy) to be posted. THEY CANNOT POST THEM THOUGH. They can just request that they be posted.

In the Invite, I would welcome Moose and Friends of the Moose to join.

I figure, if Moose are posting diaries anyway, might as well give them a bit more exposure.

So, I am thinking of doing so tonight.

If anyone is hard set AGAINST it…let me know, though, tbh, I really don’t see where the harm is in it (and I am admittedly one of the more ‘cautious’ Moose when it comes to such things). I don’t think it will alter anything ‘HERE’…but, would give an easy way to find Moose diaries over ‘THERE’.

Otherwise, will send out an invite tonight….and go from there.

    Hope all are well.

Let me know yer thoughts….if, indeed, there are any one way or the other.  😉

(oh, and if your Moose name differs from your Dkos name, please email me with the correct username…thx)
