Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

Saturday All Day Check-in for the Herd

Make sure you let your peeps

  know where to find you!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Fierces on the Weather Critter Comment are obligatory welcome.

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least contented.

On weekends (and holidays), you may find the check-in thread earlier or later than normal because … it is the weekend! Moosies need their beauty rest:

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– The Recommended list has a prominent place on the Front Page because it reflects the interests of the Moose. When people drive-by, we want them to see what we are talking about: news, politics, science, history, personal stories, culture. The list is based on number of recs and days on the list. Per Kysen: “The best way to control Rec List content is to ONLY rec diaries you WANT to see ON the list.

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

get some work done. Deadlines that I have pretended were not there are really there.  Sigh. Hope it’s a good day throughout Mooseland.

  2. What We Do And Don’t Know About How HealthCare.gov Is Performing

The White House’s bottom line is: The site’s capacity has now been doubled to handle 50,000 users at a time, up to 800,000 per day. In a briefing with reporters Tuesday, Jeff Zients, who has been tasked with overseeing the fixes, said that the administration believes that’s enough capacity to meet demand.

There will be times when the site isn’t working perfectly, Zients acknowledged. A senior administration official told TPM that HealthCare.gov sometimes saw as many as 250,000 users at once during its first month.

Zients explained the approach they took to getting there:

Though precision might be difficult, it is undeniable that the site is performing better. Earlier this month, Zients offered a number of hard metrics to prove it: the error rate and response times had decreased exponentially from their heights during the site’s troubled opening month.

He and other contractors outlined how the administration has achieved that improvement. The work is divided into three groups: one to watch for problems with the site in real time, one to oversee hardware improvements (adding new servers, that sort of thing), the other to write new code and otherwise fix some of the problems that have been identified.

I have yet to complete an application because I got stuck in the process unable to convince the website that my yearly income divided by 12 was not really $0. But we have until December 23rd to sign up (extended a week from December 15th) and I will wait until later next week. I am sure there will be plenty of traffic generated by people who want to prove Zients wrong … I don’t need to help them do so.

Hate to go out, but must go to the gym. The scales gave very bad news today, but it’s entirely my own fault for pigging out the way I do. Must think seriously about going back on the two-day-a-week fasting diet. It’s not true, as I found to my cost, that you can eat what you jolly well please on the other days–a reducing diet is just that, full time.

That said, going to make Cornish pasties for dinner tonight because we had our Vegetarian Night yesterday. Then, tomorrow evening, after I stagger home from tea with the coven, Hubby can have warmed-up pasties!  You can’t make just a couple, you have to make a lot at one time. They have no problem disappearing in our house, however, because Dearly Beloved dotes on Cornish pasties.

Other news–Monty Beagle has learned how to climb up onto our bed, so will now have to keep the bedroom door closed. He has three other beds in the house, so there’s no excuse for such behavior.  ðŸ™‚

Hope all the purple moosekind will have a good day today–stay warm!

Our Thanksgiving with family continued through yesterday…..very fun but I needed a serious nap as soon as the to go containers were packed and everyone left. Our daughter, grandson and Ronk enjoyed a walk by Whatcom Creek while the turkey was cooking…..
