Wednesday Watering Hole: Check In & Hangout for the Herd

Good morning, Moosekind, and welcome to the pre-Thanksgiving, in-transit check-in. Clan iriti are headed to Memphis to spend the holiday with family. Hope yours is marvelous!

PLEASE Do Not Recommend the check-in diary!

Recs on the weather jar comment are still welcome.

The common Moose, Alces alces, unlike other members of the deer family, is a solitary animal that doesn’t form herds. Not so its rarer but nearest relative, Alces purplius, the Motley Moose. Though sometimes solitary, the Motley Moose herds in ever shifting groups at the local watering hole to exchange news and just pass the time.

The morning check-in is an open thread and general social hour. Come back when time allows through the day – the conversation continues.

It’s traditional but not obligatory to give us a weather check where you are and let us know what’s new, interesting, challenging or even routine in your life lately. Nothing is particularly obligatory here except:

Always remember the Moose Golden (Purple?) Rule:

Be kind to each other… or else.

What could be simpler than that, right?

Note: my family is generally great during the holiday but we’ve never done one of those extended family conflict-fests. For those of you who have experienced them…

We’re in East Knoxville TN hiding until it cuts that out & roads are salted. Probably leaving around 10 AM.

    Have a fabulous Thanksgiving!

not snowing here now – 41 degrees and we have rain, which is supposed to get worse later. I have to wait till daylight to go buy my fresh turkey and start the rest of my cooking.

  3. It is 10 degrees in Madison WI right now with an expected high of 26 degrees. Scattered flurries possible but mostly dry through the long holiday weekend.

I am going to declare today a Day Off and hope that most of my clients will do so as well. Schools are closed and I have holiday meal shopping to do.

For those who will be offline tomorrow, Happy Thanksgiving to you! And PLEASE stay out of trouble. My trouble avoidance will consist of avoiding right-wing relatives and conflicts over politics and religion. I don’t mind them having their religion but for crying out loud, keep it out of my politics!

The Roberts Supreme Court will be ruling on whether or not a corporation has religious rights specifically the right to claim that providing birth control to their employees harms its immortal soul. How is it that corporations are being granted all the rights that individuals are but none of the responsibilities? How about locking them up when they commit a crime?

Yikes … early morning rant again!

    See you later!

could just stay in bed.  Hope you are all snug and dry and dreaming of stress free holidays!

Am always interested in what people eat for side dishes on Thanksgiving. There are so many regional and family traditions, many of them sacred. I had a friend who once pouted for weeks because he went to somebody’s house and there were no sweet pickles or rolls. He complained endlessly that he did not have a real Thanksgiving. For my family, side dishes are mashed turnips (although parsnips will do), succotash, baked acorn squash with butter and maple syrup, cranberries and maybe, but not necessarily, mashed potatoes. We don’t really like turkey so ham in mustard sauce is greeted with much more enthusiasm. But green beans and salad are suddenly sneaking onto the table. Creamed onions made their exit some time ago.

Whatever you have, am sure it will be delicious. Be careful driving.

Headed for acupuncture and Trader Joe’s,

It froze overnight & will again tonight – was really too cold for just a long-sleeve shirt & hoodie this morning, but it’ll be in the 50s when I leave work, so I dressed for that. Very little traffic, even for the super-early hour I come in to avoid traffic. Maybe our clients will think we’re closed today & they won’t call?

I was listening to a History Channel thing about Thanksgiving while I brushed my teeth last night — today is not the busiest travel day of the year. Not even close. They said it’s usually a Friday in summer.

I went to my co-op grocery store last night & bought stuff for Thanksgiving. Got some spicy popcorn tofu (not at all healthy, but so what) & my favorite Amy’s bowl – the mushroom risotto. And a package of organic tater tots. And I went to the yuppie grocery store & got my favorite dessert – frozen chocolate cheesecake. So I’m all set.

And at work we are raffling off themed baskets to benefit our Christmas families (even though we’re a small agency, we always adopt 2 — one with kids & 1 that are senior citizens). My division’s basket is chocolate, so I’ve contributed several interesting/exotic bars to it. And I’ll buy lots of tickets for it too — someone put in a bottle of chocolate wine?

Ranting to myself re the Roberts Supreme Court nearly spoiled my flower fun yesterday…..I hope I can keep my thoughts on cooking today.

Our dinner is quite simple…..Roasted turkey, gravy and mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with brandy, brown sugar and butter (thanks hedwig!), broccoli with a cheese sauce, cranberry relish flavored with rosemary, lemon and honey, my grandmother’s sage stuffing recipe, rolls from the bakery, and whatever dessert my daughter decides to bring. I always fill my mom’s relish dish with olives, because that was our “exotic” treat when growing up and I use some small pieces of my great grandmothers silver on the table…..I like the multi generational memories. I miss making my mom’s dinner rolls, but gluten free baking just isn’t the same.

I’ll be busy with family the next few days, so my best wishes to all now for a happy Thanksgiving.

Stay out of my house/life/family John Roberts!

finally got this site to come up stably enough to comment.

Hope everyone has a good holiday.  My bird is marinating (got a new recipe from the splendid table), and we’re having some friends over.  Should be a good one at chez bubba.

    I love this lady:

    At least the sun is shining which always helps warm up the office.  Out yesterday (burning some “use or lose time”) and will be out the rest of the week.  Trying to clear my desk but forlorn hope (all the approvers are already gone), so I thought I’d drop by and wish everybody a Happy Thanksgiving.  I’ll be having dinner at my elder son’s house – I’m bringing the turkey, he’s supplying the rest which will probably be mashed potatoes for his sons, cheese cubes and relish tray (sweet pickles, dill pickles, green & black olives) for his wife, and steamed broccoli for me.  There may or may not be pies of some sort for dessert – he’s the manager of a pizza store and is closing tonight, which means he won’t get to bed until around 4 a.m. tomorrow morning so he may not feel like dealing with it.  It’s a very truncated version of what we had when I was a kid – but then there were a whole lot more people at the dinner back then.  We went to Momma’s mother’s house and her 3 sisters, their spouses (if…), and my cousins were all there – at least 15 rather than 5.  All scattered to the 4 winds or Across The Bridge now.  Thanksgiving is also in thanks of good memories.  Wish my younger son, spouse, and sons could be here, but they live in Austin and it’s too long a trip – they’ll spend it at his godparents’ (his father’s 2nd oldest sister & spouse) in San Antonio.  {{{HUGS}}}
