Thursday Morning Herd Check-in: Greetings of the Moosekin

Make sure you let your peeps know where to find you!

The morning check-in is an open thread posted to give you a place to visit with the meeses. Feel free to chat about your weather, share a bit of your life, grump (if you must), rave (if you can). The diarist du jour sometimes posts and runs, other times sticks around for a bit, often returns throughout the day and always cares that meeses are happy … or at least content.

For those new to the Moose, Kysen left a Moose Welcome Mat (Part Deux) so, please, wipe your feet before you walk in the front door start posting.

The important stuff to get you started:

– Comments do not Auto-refresh. Click the refresh/reload on your tab to see new ones. Only click Post once for comments. When a diary’s comment threads grow, the page takes longer to refresh and the comment may not display right away.

– To check for replies to your comments, click the “My Comments” link in the right-hand column (or go to “My Moose”). Comments will be listed and a link to Recent Replies will be shown. (Note: Tending comments builds community)

– Ratings: Fierce means Thumbs Up, Fail means Thumbs Down, Meh means one of three things: I am unFailing you but I can’t Fierce you, I am unFiercing after a mistaken Fierce, or Meh. Just Meh. (p.s. Ratings don’t bestow mojo, online behaviour does).

– Finally, the posting rules for a new diary: “Be excellent to each other… or else

(Some other commenting/posting/tending notes for newbies can be found in this past check-in and, of course, consult Meese Mehta for all your questions on meesely decorum.)

Let the greetings begin!

  1. We got Son delivered to his air base in OK. He is checked in, moved into his residence, and is busy completing his tasks.

We had no issues with driving through bad weather coming home. It was a long drive of 650+ miles. Very glad to be home. Now, we are ready for some normal day to day routines. Seems we have been in orange alert mode for months.

I have 5 more days at work. Will head in today after some chat and breakfast.

65 with an expected high of 88. Headed to a Lake Huron beach in a bit. Water temperature is 66 in the area we are going. A bit nippy, but still it’s water and a sunny beach!

    A visual representation….

though – much of the grass has formed the seed heads and that was a couple of days ago!!

More rain for today.  Hopefully it’ll be below an inch – yeah, right, wishful thinking there.

Hot and humid in Westmont today.  Storms tonight and tomorrow.  Patio will be done today.  Swing set is on its way.  Fence in ten days.  The yard is almost done!  For this year.

    Have a great day!

out here in the desert with no wind to blow it away. We are well west of the dry line again today so we won’t see any actual rain. News was not good from the dr. yesterday and there will be more specialists in my future but the good news is that the steroids were discontinued for now, even the topical stuff I really disliked because it stung when I put it on.

Which is almost worse than the severe weather they were predicting. We are in a “severe” drought, we needed that rain.

About my triathlon on Sunday – been looking up race results from previous years. The swim takes me between 41-47 minutes. The bike 1:30-1:45, and the “run” 1:11 to 1:41. Swim & “run” are well outside the cutoff times they posted. Now the swim I can fudge, because it is 30 minutes from when the last wave starts. My bike time is within the limit, but there are several hills that…. even experienced triathletes (my coaches) have names for them involving cuss words. The tri I did Mother’s Day weekend, had 2 loops & was flat for this part of the world (i.e. no 45% angle hills) and I had to stop after 1 loop – only 5 miles. This course is 11 hilly miles & I can’t just not do part of it. If I take off, I have to finish or flag down a race official & quit. And I ain’t gonna make 1 hour on the run course. So my choice is DNS (“did not start”), sleep in on Sunday & go to my church’s neato special Sunday School class on social justice. Or go, do what I can till they pull me off the course. If I pick option 2, I just have to make sure I push myself hard but not so hard I can’t do the other tri at the end of June.

Oh – and speaking of church — I still haven’t decided which Tuesday night class to take — any thoughts?

Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation Explore “Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation” by J. Philip Newell as we discuss the “forgotten” Jesus, the Christ of the ancient Celtic tradition. Drawing on the gospels of Thomas, the Acts of John and writings of Christian mystics, Newell offers new hope for harmony, healing and renewal for human beings and all of creation. (I have the book they’re using, which is a point in this class’ favor)

The Future of Christian Feminism For decades now, feminist religious scholars have been reconsidering the traditions, practices, scriptures and theologies of traditional religious views. Creating space for a more inclusive faith, both women and men alike have benefited from the expansion of Christian thought brought by things like inclusive language for God, lifting up the voices of women in the Bible, and an honest look at the way atonement theory can breed violence in the world. (I love me some criticism of atonement theory — but the Celts book also contains an alternative to atonement theory, so that’s a wash. But – feminism.)

So — what do y’all think? On any of this stuff?

Been a couple of days since it last rained. I’m surprised it hasn’t flooded on our property yet. Usually, it’d flood just about very time it rained. We do have a creek bed running through our woods, but so far, just puddles.

not as much as the northern part of the state and Iowa.  The Missouri River is out of its banks at Jefferson City (about 30 miles from Columbia) and the Mississippi north of St Louis is forecast to have one of its 5th biggest floods ever by next week.

Got the Cajun coffee on.  Shortfinals is supposed to be here later today or first thing tomorrow.  Not sure, said he would call to get GPS directions.

Was watching videos of the top ten most dangerous airports in the world. One of the most dangerous is Congonhas Airpout in Sao Paulo. Short runways and right in the middle of the city with tall buildings all around. What makes it one of the most dangerous airports in the world is, it was built a long time ago and the city grew up around it. Watch this pilot’s face. I will let this guy fly me anywhere–he is the very picture of cool under pressure.

BTW, when you hear the computerized voice calling off altitude, it is working off the radar altimeter. When it says “Retard,” it is telling him to retard the throttles and chop the power.

Mornin’, all y’all. I’m just passing through, as I have an early appointment in Colorado Springs. It might freeze tonight or tomorrow night; hope pansies and petunias don’t mind a touch of frost. 🙂

and I must admit I am looking forward to the opportunity to clear some of the mildew from my pores.  Only 20% chance of rain today under partial clouds, if the Weather Channel is on the money.

I have an especially long day ahead… both an early and evening Mass for this Feast of Corpus Christi.  In-between, I’ve got some complicated cases to review, and one never knows what drop-ins will appear on a given day.

I had a couple of particularly heartbreaking failures yesterday, both involving seemingly impenetrable denial I was trying to gently break through, alas, to no avail.  We humans seem to be so adept at blinding ourselves to unpleasant realities, even when we have to sacrifice our own best interests in the process.

Oh my, I didn’t mean to get so dark in this post.  I better down one more cup of Java before dashing out the door.

Hope everyone has a great day!

which is nice.  We don’t need the rain as badly as folks points west, but we still need it.  About to dive into my day – “they” forgot to tell me about one professor who’s working with interns this summer – he was supposed to get paid for that.  Sigh.  They still haven’t told me what cost center he was supposed to get paid from and I can’t fix it until they do.  Double sigh.  An even higher up “they” decided to reformat the Annual Report (that officially the Chair writes and unofficially I do) so that’s going to be a cluster interesting.  Hope everybody has a close as possible to a safe and sane day.  {{{HUGS}}} bf

Sunny and quickly shaping up to be a perfect, warm day here by the ocean shore.

Yesterday I walked all the way to the doctor and all the way home — without a cane. This was a first! Today I’m a little sore but feeling immensely pleased with myself. 🙂

She helped me work out a plan and loose timetable for getting off the pain pills completely. This includes a prescrption for lower dosage pills taken twice a day instead of one more potent pill taken once a day. The theory is that I can then gradually reduce to one small pill a day, then one-half, then none.

This was a great relief to me because my current prescription was about gone and I’m not ready to go cold turkey. And my doctor was totally empathetic and supportive.

  16. princesspat

I’m starting to wonder if I have more than a cold…..this sneezy squinty eyed aching should be over by now 🙁

  17. slksfca

Pretty tired now, but I feel like the exertion was good for me. Plus, it’s a stunning day. I think after I lie down for a bit I’ll take another walk. At this rate tomorrow and Saturday will be too hot for much walking.

  18. slksfca

I had to pick up some prescriptions and the pharmacy wasn’t quite ready with them, so I walked around the neighborhood. Ran into my good friend L, and we’re meeting up tomorrow for drinks. I actually went with him to lunch, but I didn’t eat as I’d just had something at home. So I sat there and talked at him while he ate.

Then back to the pharmacy, where there were further snafus which I need to call my doctor’s office about.

Home again and ready for a quiet evening. 🙂
