POLL: Should taxes be levied to support wars?

With the media reporting for the eleventeenth time that Obama has, we’re-totally-serious-this-time, made up his mind on what to do about Afghanistan- the question remains on how we’re going to pay for it.

Obviously, the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are a huge part of our current national deficit, with estimates running from 1.2 to 3 trillion dollars having been spent either directly on, or on operations associated with (such as DoD funding, research, etc). There isn’t enough spending to cut to be able to address those concerns, and no politician, regardless of their political bent, has the stones to commit political suicide and suggest cutting Medicare or Social Security.

So, how about it? Should we start enacting taxes to pay for these things?

Mmmm... salsa

PICO DE GALLO

2-3 ripe tomatoes

1/2 Large white onion, diced

3 fresh, medium jalapenos, seeded and diced

1 tablespoon freshly chopped cilantro

Salt, to taste

Pico de gallo (Spanish for “rooster’s beak”) is an uncooked salsa

In Mexican cuisine, Pico de gallo is a fresh uncooked salsa made from chopped tomato, onion, and sometimes chiles (typically jalapeƱos or serranos). Pico de gallo is Spanish for “rooster’s beak”, a name it picked up because if you eat pico de gallo the way it was meant to be eaten- by itself, using only your thumb and index finger- the grasping motion used to pick it up resembles a rooster’s pecking beak. To make this right, you need the freshest vegetables you can get your hands on, and you need to make sure to cut pretty good-sized chunks, so they’ll stay on your chips, scrambled eggs, or whatever else you want to put ’em on. And if you want to keep ’em from getting too runny, make sure you drain some of the juice from the tomatoes.

If you’ve got a party, you can easy double or triple the recipe. Keep in mind, though, it doesn’t keep long- it’d be best if you prepare it the day you’re going to use it.

So, what’s on your mind, folks?

Here is a preview…

Cloture IS ON!!!

Blanch Lincoln just spoke in favor of cloture and said that she would vote for it today. Senator Lincoln was the last holdout of the 58 Democrat and 2 Independent Senators. So far no republican is siding with the Majority.

The reason we are having this vote Madam President

The republicans have sought to revive their political party by opposing any real solution to our nation’s health care crisis.

Small Minds Fear Greatly

We are not afraid. That’s the message residents of the small town of Standish, Michigan would like to send to Liz Cheney and the rest of the fraidy-cats on the Right according to a report on Greg Sargent’s blog.

The Plum Line report includes a five-minute mini-documentary commercial released by Cheney’s group, Keep America Safe, showing a few residents of Standish who oppose housing Gitmo prisoners in the local prison.

What the video doesn’t show you is the overwhelming majority of people in Standish who support the move. The video claims that the local politicians are acting against the wishes of the townspeople. A claim like that is ridiculous. If the opposition is as strong as opponents claim then any politician who acted against their wishes would be facing a recall.

The intrusion by outside groups and politicians is reminiscent of the recent NY 23 election fiasco. Cheney’s group isn’t the only outside fear monger. The town was “blessed” by the presence of one of Michigan’s leading GOP embarrassments in the person of Pete Hoekstra R-MI shortly after the first reports that the prison was under consideration. There were other outsiders and they all had a common theme – be afraid, be very afraid.

Apparently, these outsiders don’t know the people in this area any better than they knew the people of up-state NY when they ran Scozzafava out of the race.

Murder? Not!

Brian Thomas, a British man who claims to have strangled his wife during a nightmare about fighting off an intruder has been found innocent in her death. Prosecutors seem to have accepted Thomas’ claim that he had a sleep disorder and had no control over his body when he attacked his wife of 40 years while they were both asleep.
