Since 2008 – Progress Through Politics

The Lounge: Trollilicious and Now What?

What a day its been.  What a year its been.  The end of a disastrous reign is over.

As the world takes a collective sigh, I have had the pleasure of perusing teh intertoobs.  And it seems like the old dogs haven’t learned any new tricks.  The same old trolls are back to their usual debauchery.  Which leads one to wonder – why?

We have had a couple of interesting theories.  Is it Malwebolence?

The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.”

Or maybe the Broken Window Theory?

Why aren’t some people able to have a discussion about the merits of a candidate, or strengths and weaknesses of a specific strategy without getting personal or mean about it?

Are the stakes really so low in some parts of the blogosphere, that people feel the need to be nasty about everything?

Short answer.

Yes.

For many people, flaming and hostility are the only reasons to get online.

These are folks who suffer from a chronic case of assholicism.

Trolls.

troll

One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. He will spark of such an argument via the use of ad hominem attacks (i.e. ‘you’re nothing but a fanboy’ is a popular phrase) with no substance or relevence to back them up as well as straw man arguments, which he uses to simply avoid addressing the essence of the issue.

It’s much easier to criticise and inflame than it is to be creative and stimulating.

No matter what the topic – these trolls can’t help but flame.  It’s sad really.  Either way though – its been a great day.  This morning I looked at my baby as I was watching the inauguration and thought – wow, you were born in the year that Obama was elected president.  Change has come.

The era of hope and brains has begun.  Take that trolls!

I got tired of being called out as a troll hunter and part of the problem.

    H’rate and mock the douchebags.

I see by you first image you’ve let them get under your skin canada. Ignore the fools and don’t respond back to them.

Or better yet, STOP POSTING IF YOU ARE NOT HAVING FUN!!!

    Seriously!

We blog to have fun and learn (at least to me I do).

If you don’t feel welcome leave and find more fertile ground. Lots of great blogs out there.

I dunno much about trolls…though had one follow me for a bit on another site with lots of vicious personal attacks….was frustrating….

But my naive opinion on trolls….seems like a lot of work to troll.  I know that the anonymity of the internet allows people to act in nasty ways towards other human beings, but I am not sure what is so fabulous about trolling.  Whatever gets them off, I suppose.

I have little doubt that we have troll lurkers, and perhaps some of us have been trolls ourselves.  I personally would rather spend all of my energy on reading and writing a whole bunch of my words that end up saying very little rather than setting out to piss off other people and be nasty.  There’s enough shit in life that I don’t need to contribute to it. 😉

And there’s no such thing as intelligent trolling, imho.  If ya wanna play devil’s advocate, GREAT!  Bring it on!  I love an intelligent challenge.  And I hate an echo chamber.  But attacking me personally just means that person is a complete dumbass with nothing to say.

BTW, CG, love that little graphic….no matter how gnasty it is…

    Was moved by this diary.

More like h’rating the obvious trolls and their sockpuppets.

Not even reading what they write.

If Jerome bans me for that he has every right and I won’t complain. I’m not even explaining the h’rates.

Everybody knows who the trolls are ( only 2 or 3) so this “made a great point” and ” not trolling right now” is bullshit. I’m not responding to anybody who wants to go “holier than thou” because they agree with the person doing the trolling. If you don’t like it. Write the mods an email and complain cuz I don’t really give a fuck. It seems these are the same people who complain loudest when they (or their issues) are the ones being attacked.

I’ll steer clear of a Moose who called me a troll hunter and let him clean up his own diaries (I’m not talking about Bob by the way, me and him are cool).

    Hey lurking trolls …. I’m baaaaaack !!!
